Harvesting Cost and Productive of Tree-Length Thinning in a Pinus densiflora Stand Using the Tower Yarder (HAM300)

  • Logging equipment and method have a major influence on harvesting productivity and cost. This study investigated the productivity and operational costs of tree-length cable yarding system using HAM300, a domestically developed tower yarder. We tested HAM300 for thinning operation in Pinus densiflora stands at Gangreung, Gangwon-do on April, 2014. To assess the productivity we conducted time study for each stage of the operation. When the average time/cycle was examined for each stage of the operation, the longest was for yarding (241 sec), followed by delimbing (237 sec), felling (153 sec), and processing (103 sec). Furthermore, productivity for felling was $8.6m^3/hr$, followed by delimbing ($5.1m^3/hr$), yarding ($3.5m^3/hr$), and processing ($8.1m^3/hr$). The total cost for the tree-length logging system was $58,446won/m^3$, of which the majority was incurred by the yarding cost at $46,217won/m^3$ (79.3%), whereas the lowest cost was for felling at $2,359won/m^3$ (4.1%). We suggest that it is necessary to foster specialized operators and provide training in operating the tower yarder thereby implementing efficient harvesting system resulting from low-cost yarding.

산림 입지토양 환경요인에 의한 상수리나무와 신갈나무의 적지추정 (Estimation of Forest Productive Area of Quercus acutissima and Quercus mongolica Using Site Environmental Variables)

  • This study was conducted to estimate site productivity of Quercus acutissima and Quercus mongolica by four forest climatic zones. We used site environmental variables (28 geographical and pedological factors) and site index as a site productivity indicator from nation-wide 23,315 stands. Based on multiple regression analysis between site index and major environmental variables, the best-fit multivaliate models were made by each species and forest climatic zone. Most of site index prediction models by species were regressed with seven to eight factors, including altitude, relief, soil depth, and soil moisture etc. For those models, three evaluation statistics such as mean difference, standard deviation of difference, and standard error of difference were applied to the test data set for the validation of the results. According to the evaluation statistics, it was found that the models by climatic zones and species fitted well to the test data set with relatively low bias and variation. Also having above middle of site index range, total area of productive sites for the two Quercus spp. estimated by those models would be about 6% of total forest area. Northern temperate forest zone and central temperate forest zone had more productive area than southern temperate forest zone and warm temperate forest zone. As a result, it was concluded that the regressive prediction with site environmental variables by climatic zones and species had enough estimation capability of forest site productivity.

  • 참나무류 주요 수종의 성장(成長) 및 물질생산(物質生産)을 파악하기 위하여 경기도(京畿道) 광주지방(廣州地方) 서울대학교 농업생명과학대학 부속 중부연습림에 위치하고 있는 평균 수령(樹齡) 32-38년생(年生) 굴참나무, 상수리나무, 떡갈나무, 신갈나무 등 4개 수종 천연임분(天然林分)을 대상으로 임분별 $10m{\times}10m$ 조사구 10개씩을 설치 한 후 매목조사(每木調査)를 실시하고 임분별 10주씩 총 40주의 표본목(標本木)을 선정 벌목하여 조사하였다. 평균 흉고직경(胸高直徑)과 수고(樹高)는 상수리나무, 굴참나무, 신갈나무, 떡갈나무 임분의 순으로 컸다. 임목밀도(林木密度)는 굴참나무, 떡갈나무, 신갈나무, 상수리나무 임분의 순으로 높았다. 현존량(現存量)은 상수리나무 임분 122.73t/ha, 굴참나무 임분 87.03t/ha, 신갈나무 임분 72.14t/ha, 떡갈나무 임분 38.56t/ha의 순으로 많았다. 순생산량(純生産量)은 신갈나무 임분 7.49t/ha/yr., 굴참나무 임분 6.47t/ha/yr., 상수리나무 임분 6.06t/ha/yr., 떡갈나무 임분 3.52t/ha/yr.의 순으로 많았다. 순동화율(純同化率)은 상수리나무 임분 3.275, 굴참나무 임분 2.898, 신갈나무 임분 2.888, 떡갈나무 임분 1.840의 순으로 높았다. 4개 임분의 순동화율(純同化率) 순위와 순생산량(純生産量)순위가 다른 것은 잎의 현존량(現存量)이 다르기 때문이었으며 순생산량(純生産量) 순위와 현존량(現存量) 순위가 다른 것은 지속적 축적기관인 줄기, 비교적 단기간의 축적기관인 가지, 비축적기관인 잎의 순생산량(純生産量) 구성비(構成比)가 다르기 때문이었다.

상이(相異)한 임분(林分)의 토층분화(土層分化)에 따른 수분분포(水分分布)와 이동특성(移動特性) (Characteristics of Water Distribution and Transport Depending on Soil Evolution in the Different Forest Stands)

  • 본 연구는 경기도 광주군에 위치한 경희대학교 연습림내의 낙엽송, 잣나무 및 신갈나무의 천연활엽수로 구성된 3개의 임분의 선정된 구간에서 경사도별로 토층 분화와 강우에 따른 수분분포 특성을 구명하기 위하여 수행되었다. 조사대상 임분의 O층과 A층의 깊이는 활엽수나 낙엽송 염분에 비하여 임분 밀도가 높은 잣나무 임분에서 더 깊어지는 결과를 보여 토층 분화는 경사도, 토양침식과 물질퇴적과 함께 임분을 구성하는 식생과 임분 밀도 등이 주요인으로 작용하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 각각의 임분에서 선정된 지점별로 용적밀도를 조사한 결과 경사도가 높은 지점에서는 용적밀도가 낮은 반면 토층이 잘 발달된 경사도가 낮은 지점에서는 용적밀도가 높은 것으로 조사되었다. 따라서 산림토양의 깊이별 용적밀도 변화는 토양표면에서의 침식, 유기물 함량, 토양입자의 수직적 이동과 상관성이 높은 것으로 판단된다. 그리고 이러한 용적밀도와 유기물의 토양내 분포 특성은 수리전도도에도 영향을 미쳐 용적밀도와 수리전도도는 반비례하는 경향을 보였으나, 유기물 함량에 따른 표층토만의 수리전도도의 변이는 높지 않았다. 낙엽송 임분에서 각각의 경사도와 토층 분화 깊이가 다른 세 지점에서 강우의 침투 특성을 볼 때 토양의 용적밀도와 경사도가 임분에 가해지는 강우의 수직적 이동뿐만 아니라 수평이동에도 영향을 마치는 것으로 조사되었다. 또한 lysimeter 실험 결과로부터 추정할 때 토양내 수분이 용적밀도가 다른 토양층간을 이동할 때 수분은 작은 범위의 수리전도도가 수분 이동을 결정하며, 특히 불포화 형태로 수분이 이동할 때는 유기물에 의한 수분 보유력도 토양내 수분이동에 영향을 미칠 것으로 추측할 수 있다. 결론적으로 산림토양에서의 수분 분포와 이동 특성은 사면경사도와 같은 지형적인 요인과 토양의 물리적 성질인 용적밀도와 유기물 함량 등에 의해 영향을 받는 것으로 사료된다.

삼나무, 편백의 연륜과 기후인자 분석을 통한 강원 동해안 지역 식재가능성 검토 (A Consideration of the Possibility of Planting Cryptomeria japonica and Chamaecyparis obtusa on the East Sea Area in Gangwon-Province by Tree Ring Dating and Climatic Factor Analysis)

  • We measured radial growth of Cryptomeria japonica and Chamaecyparis obtusa growing in Gangneung, Boseong, Yangsan and Ulleung-do, respectively and analyzed its relationship with temperature and precipitation. We found from the result of tree ring counting that forest stands of Cryptomeria japonica in Gangneung and Boseong was 40 to 50 years old and 50 to 70 years old in Yangsan and Ulleung-do. According to climate change, the mean temperature in Gangneung was found to be $12^{\circ}C$ to $13^{\circ}C$ which was similar to that of Boseong and Yangsan 40 to 50 years ago. While the result of the radial growth measured from Cryptomeria japonica in Gangneung showed a slightly decreasing tendency compared to the other areas, Chamaecyparis obtusa showed an increasing tendency. In the case of Cryptomeria japonica, a strong negative correlation between radial growth and climate related variables including both mean temperature and mean precipitation existed in Ulleung. There was a strong negative correlation between radial growth and mean temperature for Chamaecyparis obtusa in Yangsan, although there was a positive correlation in Gangneung and Yangsan.

  • 우리나라 전체 산림(山林)의 약 67%가 II 영급(齡級)이하의 유령림(幼齡林)이며 흉고직경(胸高直徑) 16cm이하의 간벌(間伐) 소경재(小徑材)를 생산할 수 있는 III 영급(齡級)까지 합산하면 전체 산림(山林)의 90%이상을 차지한다. 그러므로 본연구에서는 간벌재(間伐材)와 소경재(小徑材)가 밀접한 연계성(連繫性)을 가지고 있음을 감안하여 우리나라 간벌재(間伐材) 생산(生産)의 실태분석(實態分析), 문제점(問題點) 및 개선책(改善策), 그리고 건의사항(建議事項)등을 제시해 보았다.

우리 나라 주요 삼림수종의 낙엽의 생산과 분해에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Production and Decomposition of Litters of Major Forest Trees in Korea)

  • The production and decomposition rate of litters of major forest trees in Korea, such as Quercus acutissima, Quercus mogolica Robinia pseudoacacia Pinus rigida, Pinus thunbergiana, Abies koreana,Phy'llostackys reticulata, were estimated by Olson model. The amount of mineral nutrients in litters and soil were measured, and the relationships among them were studied. The annual litter production was the most in the forest of broadleaved deciduous trees and the least in the forest of monocotyledonous trees. The decomposition rate of broadleaved deciduous litters was higher than that of coniferous litters and lower than that of R. pseudoacacia litters. The time required for the decomposition of half of the accumulated organic matter of R.pseudoacacia litter, Quercus litter, P. rigida litter, Ph. reticulata litter, P. thunbergiana litter and .4.koreana litter in the forest stands were 1.263 years, 2.290~2.365 years, 2.644 years, 4.660 years,4.750 years, 6.699 years respectively. The amounts of N in litters and the amounts of N returned to the soil in the forests of R. pseudoacacia. Quercus, Pinus were proportional to the decay rate of organic matter. Modelling Growth and Yield for Intensively Managed Forests

  • Growth and yield prediction methods, ranging from whole-stand models to individual-tree models, have been developed for forest types managed for wood production. The resultant models are used for a host of purposes including inventory updating, management planning, evaluation of silvicultural alternatives, and harvest scheduling. Because of the large investment in developing growth and yield models for improved genotypes and silvicultural practices for loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) in the Southern United States, this region serves to illustrate approaches for modelling intensively managed forests. Analytical methods and computing power generally do not restrict development of reliable growth and yield models. However, long-term empirical observations on stand development, which are time consuming and expensive to obtain, often limit modelling efforts. Given that growth and yield models are used to project present volumes and to evaluate alternative treatment effects, data of both the inventory type and the experimental type are needed. Data for developing stand simulators for loblolly pine plantations have been obtained from a combination of permanent plots in operational forest stands and silvicultural experiments; these data collection efforts are described and summarized. Modelling is essential for integrating and synthesizing diverse information, identifying knowledge gaps, and making informed decisions. The questions being posed today are more complex than in the past, thus further accentuating the need for comprehensive models for stand development.

Stand Structure of the Natural Broadleaved-Korean Pine Forests in Northeast China

  • Based on the data representing four typical Korean pine forest types, the age structure, DBH distribution, species composition, and forking rule were systemically analyzed for old-growth Korean pine forest in Liangshui Nature Reserve, northeast China. The age structure of Korean pine trees was strongly uneven-aged with one dominated peak following normal distribution, and age of trees varied from 100 to 180 years within a stand. The DBH and height differences in same age class (20 years) varied from 28 cm~64 cm and 5 to 20 m, respectively. Many conifer and hard wood species, such as spruce, fir, costata birch, basswood, oak, and elm, were mixed with dominated trees of Korean pine. The canopy of the old-growth Korean pine forest can be divided into two layers, and differences of mean age and height between Layer I and Layer II were ranged 80~150 years and 7~13 m, respectively. The Weibull function was used to model the diameter distribution and performed well to describe size-class distribution either with a single peak in over-story canopy and inverse J-shape in under-story canopy for old-growth Korean pine stands. The forking height of Korean pine trees ranged from 16m to 24 m (mean 19.4 m) and tree age about 120 to 160 years old. The results will provide a scientific basis to protect and recover the ecosystem of natural old-growth Korean pine and also provide the model in management of Korean pine plantation.

관악산의 산림군락에 관한 식물사회학적 연구 (A Phytosociological Study of the Forest Communities on Mt. Kwanak, Seoul)

  • As part of the study of the structure and the successional trends of our temperate forests, a quantitative survey was made of the relatively well conserved forest stands on Mt. Kwanak, Seoul. Three community types were observed; the Pinus densiflora-Quercus mongolica community, the Pinus densiflora community, and the Quercus mongolica community. Evidence suggests that the dominance of Pinus densiflora and quercus mongolica will continue in the Pinus densiflora-Quercus mongolica community, however, in the Pinus densiflora community the dominant species, Pinus densiflora, is now being replaced by Quercus mongolica. The trend toward an increased in Acer pseudo-sieboldianum var. koreanum, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Carpinus cordita, and Acer mono is observed in the Quercus mongolica community. An analysis of the overall composition of the forest reveals that the upper story is mostly occupied by Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora, the shrub layer by Rhododendron schlippenbachii and Lespedeza maximowiczii, and the herb layer by Spodiopogon cotulifer and Artemisia keiskeana. Quercus mongolica may cover most part of the forest, gradually excluding Pinus densiflora. Acer pseudo-sieboldianum var. koreanum, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Carpinus coradata, and Acer mono are increasing in importance with the potentiality of developing into major canopy components. With the diversification of the physical habitat Cephalotaxus koreana and Magnolia sieboldii, the species which had almost completely been eliminated form the forest through the severe interferences, have reappeared.
