A Study on SmartPhone Hacking and Forensic of Secondary Damage caused by Leakage of Personal Information (개인정보유출 2차 피해로 인한 스마트폰 Smishing 해킹과 Forensic 연구)

  • In 2014, the leakage of personal information from 3 credit card companies resulted in divulging approximately 10,000 customers' personal information. Although the credit card companies concluded that there was no secondary loss due to the leakage of personal information, secondary financial losses resulting from the leakage of personal information currently occur. In particular, hackers who employ smishing masquerade acquaintances by using the divulged personal information to ask payment for Ms. Kim's Sochi Olympics legal processing or exposed traffic violations. The hackers cause secondary financial losses through smartphones. This study aims to conduct a forensic analysis of smishing incidents in smartphones through the leakage of personal information, and to make a forensic analysis of financial losses due to the smishing incidents.

Identification of 19 Species of Poisonous Plants from Jeju Island and Construction of a Database Using DNA-barcoding (DNA-barcoding을 이용한 제주도 자생 독성 식물 19종의 종 식별 및 데이터베이스 구축)

  • Food poisoning accidents caused by poisonous plants occur every year. As certain poisonous plants are mistaken for edible plants causing food poisoning, accurate species identification of poisonous plants is required. DNA barcodes suitable for species identification of poisonous plants and database that can be used for accurate species identification are necessary for their use in forensic cases. In this study, species identification of 19 poisonous plants native to Jeju Island using seven DNA barcodes (trnH-psbA, trnL-trnF, trnL intron, rbcL, matK, ITS1-ITS4, 18S rRNA) was performed to construct a database containing sequence information and DNA barcode universality. trnL-trnF barcode and ITS1-ITS4 barcode were the easiest markers for PCR amplification and sequence retrieval, and the combination of the two barcodes enabled single species identification in 18 out of 19 plants. Therefore, when an investigation of unknown poisonous plants is requested, combination of trnL-trnF and ITS1-ITS4 barcodes is considered as a primary marker for species identification. The database of recommended DNA barcodes for each poisonous plant presented in this study will be helpful in plants poisoning cases.

  • A small and inexpensive thermal cycler (PCR machine), known as the MiniPCRTM Mini8 Thermal Cycler (Amplyus, Cambridge, MA, USA), was developed. In this study, the performance of this PCR machine was compared with the GeneAmp® PCR system 9700 (Applied Biosystems) using four autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) kits, a Y-chromosome STR kit, and a mitochondrial DNA HV1/HV2 sequence analysis. The sensitivity and stochastic effects of the STR multiplex kits and the quality of the DNA sequence analysis were similar between the two PCR machines. The MiniPCRTM Mini8 Thermal Cycler could be used for analyses at forensic DNA laboratories and crime scenes. The cost of the PCR is so economical that school laboratories and individuals could use the machines.

  • Ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and ethyl sulfate (EtS), which are ethanol metabolites, are direct indicators of ethanol intake; they have been studied in a variety of biological samples in forensic science. It is necessary to analyze ethanol metabolites to determine whether the ethanol detected in autopsy cases was due to alcohol consumption before death or due to the ethanol produced from post-mortem decay. In general, EtG and EtS are detected in the blood together with ethanol; however, it may be difficult to secure blood depending on the extent of decay. Therefore, the aforementioned method should be replaced by detecting the ethanol metabolites using tissue biological samples. In this study, we determined the optimal experimental conditions for detecting EtG and EtS from spleen samples using Liquid Chromatography - Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Herein, the test method was validated, and an analysis method was applied to the actual autopsy cases.

  • Fundamental processes in digital forensic investigation - such as disk imaging - were developed when digital investigation was relatively young. As digital forensic processes and procedures matured, these fundamental tools, that are the pillars of the reset of the data processing and analysis phases of an investigation, largely stayed the same. This work is a study of modern digital forensic imaging software tools. Specifically, we will examine the feature sets of modern digital forensic imaging tools, as well as their development and release cycles to understand patterns of fundamental tool development. Based on this survey, we show the weakness in current digital investigation fundamental software development and maintenance over time. We also provide recommendations on how to improve fundamental tools.

  • 국내의 설탕 제조공장에서 발생한 설탕 분진 폭발사고와 관련하여 조사내용을 토대로 분진폭발 원인을 분석하였다. 폭발이 발생한 장소는 제조된 설탕을 저장하는 사이로(Silo) 등이 포함되는 공간으로 설탕 분진이 항상 존재하는 곳이며, 작은 불씨만 있어도 쉽게 폭발로 이어질 수 있는 위험한 장소임을 공장 관계자들은 숙지하고 있었다. 폭발직전 용접작업이 있었음을 현장조사에서 확인할 수 있었으며, 설탕 분진이 폭발할 수 있다는 위험성에 대하여 전혀 알지 못하는 임시 직원이 작업과정에서 용접을 한 것으로 확인되었다. 분진 폭발의 위험성이 존재하는 환경에서 불꽃을 취급한 작업 자체도 부적절했지만, 안전관리 측면에서 설탕 분진의 위험성에 대하여 무지한 임시 직원이 혼자 작업할 수 있도록 용인한 점과 사전에 안전교육이 전혀 없었다는 점이 더욱 문제라고 할 수 있다.

  • The gas leak and explosion accident is able to give a fatal injury to nearby people from the explosion center and interest in effect of the explosion on the human body is increased. Accidents by Portable Butane Gas Range of a gas explosion accident occupy the most share. As a result, the injury on the human body frequently occur. However, It is situation that are experiencing difficulties in consequence analysis of explosion accidents owing to shortage of explosion power data and lack of research on the effect of the human body by the gas explosion. This paper acquire human injury data by performing the actual explosion experiment with Portable Butane Gas Range and evaluate power by explosion and effect of explosion on the human body to perform explosion simulation with LS-DYNA program. It is intended to contribute to the exact cause of the accident investigation and the same type of accident prevention.

A Method of Forensic Authentication via File Structure and Media Log Analysis of Digital Images Captured by iPhone (아이폰으로 촬영된 디지털 이미지의 파일 구조 및 미디어 로그 분석을 통한 법과학적 진본 확인 방법)

  • The digital image to be accepted as legal evidence, it is important to verify the authentication of the digital image. This study proposes a method of authenticating digital images through three steps of comparing the file structure of digital images taken with iPhone, analyzing the encoding information as well as media logs of the iPhone storing the digital images. For the experiment, digital image samples were acquired from nine iPhones through a camera application built into the iPhone. And the characteristics of file structure and media log were compared between digital images generated on the iPhone and digital images edited through a variety of image editing tools. As a result of examining those registered during the digital image creation process, it was confirmed that differences from the original characteristics occurred in file structure and media logs when manipulating digital images on the iPhone, and digital images take with the iPhone. In this way, it shows that it can prove its forensic authentication in iPhone.

A Comparison of Emotional Characteristics of Women Charged with Homicide or Non-violent Crimes : Focused on Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (살인으로 기소된 여성과 비폭력 범죄로 기소된 여성의 정서 특성 비교 : 미네소타 다면적 인성검사-2를 중심으로)

  • Objective : This study aims to identify personality characteristics in female homicide offenders by using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) test. Methods : This study retrospectively analyzed the mental appraisals and MMPI-2 scores of 54 women charged with homicide and 67 women charged with non-violent crimes, who were referred to National Forensic Hospital in Gongju city for psychiatric evaluation between January 2012 and March 2016. Results : Women charged with homicide scored significantly higher on Hs (p=0.018), D (p<0.001), Hy (p=0.002) and Pt (p=0.004) than the women charged with non-violent crimes. The women charged with homicide may have developed the following characteristics: hypochondriasis, depression, hysteria and psychasthenia. In multiple regression analyses, a final regression model including age of crime onset and depression was significant, explaining 16.5% of the variance in homicides committed by females. Conclusion : These findings suggest that personality characteristics in the female homicide offenders might be different compared to the non-violent crime offenders.

Development of the Forensic Nursing Competency Scale for Nurses (간호사의 법의간호 역량 측정도구 개발)

  • Purpose : This study aims to develop the Forensic Nursing Competency Scale suitable to South Korea. Methods : The initial items were generated through literature review and interviews. Items were evaluated by experts for content and face validity. By conducting a pilot test, 74 measurement items were developed. In total, 333 copies of the questionnaire were analyzed regarding the validity and reliability of the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 program and AMOS 18.0 program. Results : The study selected 53 questions after testing the content, face, and construct validity of the scale. The final 53 questions were composed of 15 sub-components in eight domains. These eight domains encompassed nursing practice, communication, critical thinking, human caring and relationships, evidence management, active information collection, professional development, and knowledge integration. Conclusions : In order to verify the effectiveness of the scale, future studies need to compare the forensic nursing competency in two groups to assess differences in these competency. Moreover, it is necessary to develop a forensic nursing educational program and validate its effectiveness by using this scale.
