Opportunities of Organization of Classes in Foreign Languages by Means of Microsoft Teams (in Practice of Teaching Ukrainian as Foreign Language

  • The characteristic aspects of learning a foreign language require special resources and tools for online learning. Criteria for choosing educational platforms depend on key elements of an academic subject area. Microsoft Teams (hereafter, MT) educational platform is competitive one because it meets most of the needs that arise during the formation of a secondary linguistic persona. Due to the large number of corporate programs, there are a successful acquisition of language skills and the implementation of all types of oral activities of students. A significant MT advantage is the constant analysis and monitoring of the platform of participants' needs in the educational process by developers. The article highlights MT advantages and disadvantages. The attention is drawn to individual programs, which, in the authors' opinion, are the most successful to learn writing, reading, speaking, listening, as well as organize classes that meet needs of modern foreign students.

Time-moving Metaphors and Ego-moving Metaphors: Which Is Better Comprehended by Taiwanese?

  • This is a semantic pilot study which concentrates on how people in Taiwan process the temporal metaphors, ego-moving metaphor and time-moving metaphor. Motivated by the research of Gentner, Imai, and Boroditsky (2002) in which the English native speakers comprehend ego-moving metaphors faster than time-moving metaphors, the present study attempts to reexamine whether the faster reaction to ego-moving metaphors is shared by both the Chinese native speakers and EFL learners. To achieve the goals, 25 Chinese/English bilinguals are invited to be examined via the16 Chinese and 16 English test sentences. The recordings of their accuracy on each item are served as the databases used to compare with the study of Gentner, Imai, and Boroditsky (2002). The two finding presented here are: (1) when the subjects tested in their native language, Chinese, they process ego-moving metaphors better. (2) when tested in the foreign language, English, they conceptualize time-moving metaphors much better.

The Importance of CCDL in English Education

  • Factors affecting foreign language learning task are diverse in nature due to the different social and cultural backgrounds so that learners have to somehow use strategies and expressions to adjust diverse factors to their learning environments. The main purpose of this paper is to show how important NNS vs. NNs interaction through CCDL can be in their enhancement of English proficiency by giving examples from their chatting conversation(written conversation) data collected for over two semesters. Chatting as a means of synchronous communication interaction between students from two different cultural backgrounds can act as a predictor of foreign language achievement. Chatting and Telemeet activities have their own advantages in enhancing communicative competence when learning English. By engaging in these synchronous communication activities learners of English from different cultural backgrounds can acquire unique strategies and expressions from which they learn from each other. In short, this study advocates the importance of strategies and patterns foreign language learners can acquire from interaction among culturally different peer groups.

문화에 대한 태도와 학습동기가 사관생도의 영어 성취도에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Attitudes Toward Culture and Motivation on Military Cadets' English Achievement)

  • Attitudes toward target language culture and motivation have been known as important factors in second or foreign language learning. In this study, cadets' attitudes toward the target language community and culture were investigated to find out any relationships with English achievement. Integrative or instrumental motivation in foreign military context was investigated to determine which motivation was more positively related to English proficiency. Cadets' responses were shown highly positive and internally consistent in most cases. Military cadets' attitudes toward American culture were statistically significant and could predict their English achievement. Even though integrative motivation was statistically significant, correlation with English achievement was low. However, instrumental motivation was not significant. This result implies that attitudes toward culture is an important factor in foreign language learning and integrative-instrumental motivation dichotomy might not be enough to explain specific context like cadets' English learning situation at Korea Army Academy at Youngcheon.

EPS-TOPIK 시행 현황 및 관계자 요구 분석 (Enforcement Status of EPS-TOPIK and Needs Analysis of EPS Centers)

  • EPS-TOPIK is a test of Korean proficiency which is enforced at the level of Korean government for the selection of competent foreign workers. Therefore, it must ensure validity and reliability, and practicability as a language assessment tool. For seeking a way of developing EPS-TOPIK, in this paper, the current state of EPS-TOPIK was investigated based upon the materials published by the Korean government, and the questions of EPS-TOPIK were analysed. Together with this, newspaper articles both in Korea and in foreign countries were also analyzed, and the directors of the EPS center abroad were interviewed. According to the survey results, as expected, the local environment of Korean education is poor in a number of ways to improve the Korean communication skills of foreign workers, as well as to prepare the EPS-TOPIK. To improve the efficiency of the EPS-TOPIK and to enhance the Korean communication skills of foreign workers, the Korean language institutions including the King Sejong Institute, which are in charge of the Korean language education should closely cooperate with the Human Resources Development Service of Korea, which is responsible for all of the influx of foreign workers.

  • Learners and users of a second language have to resort to a variety of conversational strategies or structures to enable them to communicate effectively and competently. Factors affecting effective communication among English as a second or English as foreign language (ESL/EFL) learners are diverse in nature because of different socio-cultural backgrounds. Gambits as a conversational strategy are used to a large extent and teachers must be made aware of such conversational strategies used by English as second or foreign language learners. Thus, studies focusing on conversational strategies among ESL/EFL learners in the English language classroom are important in order to identify the types of conversational strategies used and to help teachers to understand the appropriate conversational strategies and structures. Such understanding can be used to guide learners to use correct conversational strategies when communicating in English. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the use of gambits as a communication strategy in conversation among non-native speakers of English in an English as a second language(ESL) context based on Kellers conversational strategy signals.   • As the number of ships and goods shipped by marine transportation increases, almost all shipping companies adopted foreign crews in order to overcome lack of seafarers and be competitive for manning cost. Thus, these days it is inevitable to work with foreign crews aboard ships, but there occur many marine accidents due to language barriers and communication problems under multicultural and multilingual shipboard environments. In order to resolve troubles resulting from different languages, reduce miscommunication risks, and make working on ships safe and efficient, this study recognized the current status of ships with mixed crews, analyzed marine accidents caused by communication problems not only in Korea but also in other countries using analytical methodologies. Additionally, existing hazards affecting miscommunication were identified and risk of miscommunication was quantitatively evaluated while offering suggestions and future forecasts. Consequently, in this study we suggested that fundamental dialogues are to be necessarily educated on the ships with foreign crews so as to reduce the language barrier and risk of miscommunication. Furthermore, a standard maritime Korean language program and manual targeting Korean coastal vessels would be developed in the next step.

  • 최근 효율적인 외국어 학습 및 진단을 위해 외국어학습의 뇌공학적 접근이 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 본 논문은 기존의 지필고사를 대체할 수 있는 뇌공학적 외국어 능숙도 진단 도구를 개발하는 것을 목표로 이를 위해 기존 언어심리학 과제에서 주로 사용되었던 테스트들을 기반으로 외국어 능숙도 진단을 위한 도구를 개발 하였다. 본 논문에서 제안한 도구들은 학습자의 기억능력, 이해능력, 산출능력을 5가지 테스트를 통하여 대뇌의 정보처리 양상을 간접적으로 측정한다.

An analysis of English as a foreign language learners' perceptual confusions and phonemic awareness of English fricatives

  • This study investigates perceptual confusions of English fricatives among 121 Korean elementary school English as a foreign language (EFL) learners with shorter periods of learning English. The objective is to examine how they perceive English fricative consonants and to provide educational guidelines. Two sets of English fricative identification tasks-voiceless fricatives and voiced fricatives-were administered to participants in a High Variability Phonetic Training (HVPT) setting. Their phonemic awareness of the fricatives was visualized in perceptual confusion maps via multidimensional scaling analysis. The findings are explored in terms of the impacts of Korean EFL learners' L1 linguistic aspects and a comparison with L1 learners. Learners' phonemic awareness patterns are then compared with their relative importance in speech intelligibility based on a functional load hierarchy. The results indicated that Korean elementary EFL learners recognized English fricatives in a manner largely akin to L1 learners, suggesting their ongoing acquisition progress. Additionally, the findings demonstrated that the young EFL learners possess sufficient phonemic awareness for most high functional load segments but encounter some difficulties with one high and one low functional pair. The findings of this study offer suggestions for diagnosing language learners' phonemic awareness abilities, thereby aiding in the development of practical guidelines for language instructional design and helping educators make informed decisions regarding teaching priority in L2 classes.

외국어 능력 향상을 위한 사용자 안구운동 분석 기반의 지능형 학습도구 개발 (Development of Intelligent Learning Tool based on Human eyeball Movement Analysis for Improving Foreign Language Competence)

  • 최근 효율적인 외국어 학습 및 테스트를 위한 교육 콘텐츠 개발에 대한 연구가 많이 되고 있다. 이러한 추세에 기반 하여, 온라인 학습 도구와 방송매체 등의 IT 기술을 이용한 e-learning 교육용 콘텐츠 개발이 급격하게 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 하지만 기존의 IT 기술을 이용한 교육용 콘텐츠들은 단방향의 학습 정보만을 제공하기에, 외국어 글을 이해하는 데는 사용자의 학습 편의를 제공하기 어렵다. 사용자 편의가 제공되려면 사용자의 학습 진단에 대한 부가적인 off-line 분석이 요구된다. 이에 본 논문에서는 사용자의 외국어 능력 향상을 위하여, 실시간(on-line)으로 학습 콘텐츠를 제공하여 외국어 능력을 진단하고, 향상시키기 위한 사용자 안구운동 분석 기반의 지능형 학습 도구를 제안한다. 이에 본 논문에서는 사용자 학습상태를 분석하기 위하여 인지심리학/신경생리학 기반의 사용자 학습상태와 관련된 안구 운동 특징 정보를 추출하고 판별 분석한다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 지능형 학습 도구는 앞서 언급한 사용자 안구운동 특징 정보를 기저로 하여 사용자가 외국어 읽기를 수행할 때, 사용자가 응시하고 있는 단어에 대하여, '안다/모른다'를 분석하여, 모르는 단어일 경우 실시간(on-line)으로 웹에서 단어를 검색하고, 정리하여 사용자에게 제공함으로써, 외국어로 된 글을 읽고 이해하는데 도움을 주는 자가 학습 서비스를 제공한다. 제안하는 시스템은 학습자들에게 자기 주도적 학습 도구를 제공하고, 자동화된 학습 콘텐츠로 외국어로 된 글의 이해에 대한 성취와 만족도를 높일 수 있다.
