Arthrography is one of highly accurate diagnostic tools for internal derangements of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Both TM joints are connected by the mandible and one may have influence upon the other. We performed bilateral TMJ arthrograms in 42 patients with TMJ disorders to evaluate the bilaterality of internal derangements of the TMJ. The results were as follows : 1. We could not find any specificity in clinical symptoms according to each state of internal derangements of the TMJ. 2. The bilaterality of internal derangements of the TMJ was 61%. 3. Statistically, significant correlation was found in the aspects of the presence of arthrographic abnormality in both TMJ and each state of internal derangements in them. Therefore, the patients, who are diagnosed as any internal derangement of the TMJ, need to have assured examination in the contralateral joint.

In general, forces acting on aerospace structures can be divided into two categories-a) conservative forces and b) nonconservative forces. Aeroelastic effects occur due to highly flexible nature of the structure, coupled with the unsteady aerodynamic forces, causing unbounded static deflection (divergence) and dynamic oscillations (flutter). Flexible wing panels subjected to jet thrust and missile type of structures under end rocket thrust are nonconservative systems. Here the structural elements are subjected to follower kind of forces; as the end thrust follow the deformed shape of the flexible structure. When a structure is under a constant follower force whose direction changes according to the deformation of the structure, it may undergo static instability (divergence) where transverse natural frequencies merge into zero and dynamic instability (flutter), where two natural frequencies coincide with each other resulting in the amplitude of vibration growing without bound. However, when the follower forces are pulsating in nature, another kind of dynamic instability is also seen. If certain conditions are satisfied between the driving frequency and the transverse natural frequency, then dynamic instability called 'parametric resonance' occurs and the amplitude of transverse vibration increases without bound. The present review paper will discuss the aeroelastic behaviour of aerospace structures under nonconservative forces.

The study on the interaction forces of some biological materials is important to understanding biological phenomena and their application to practical purpose. This paper introduces a measuring technique for biological adhesive forces using the AFM(Atomic Force Microscope). Since no standardized thesis on adhesive forces exist, the adhesive forces is defined as adhesive forces against a hardened surface of biological materials. To grant the results are meaningful, which is based on the understanding the surface characteristics of biological materials using the AFM, a nominal value of average adhesive force per unit area should be measured. Therefore the modified AFM probe with small micro glass bead was proposed so that it can guarantee the required contact area for measuring the average adhesive forces. A pyrex glass substrate with circular patterns, which was fabricated by micromachining technique, is introduced in order to controll the contact area. The two types of mussel adhesive proteins, Celltak and recombinant-MGFP5, were tested by the proposed measuring method. The test results show that the adhesive force of the mussel adhesive proteins can be reliably measured by use of this method.

Adhesion and friction forces influence adversely on performance and durability of MEMS. It has been reported that the adhesion and friction forces can be reduced with the introduction of micro surface bumps into the contacting interfaces. In this study experiments were conducted to investigate comparatively the effect of hemispherical and torus micro bumps on the adhesion and friction forces. It is confirmed that micro bumps reduce the adhesion and friction forces, and their effect is more pronounced with the bumps of smaller outer boundary radius. Moreover, the results shows that the torus bumps exhibit more rapid decrease of the adhesion and friction forces with the decrease in the outer boundary radius of bump than the hemispherical bumps. When the magnitude of adhesion force is same, the torus bumps generate smaller friction force than the hemispherical bumps. The usage of hemispherical and torus bumps to reduce the adhesion and friction forces in MEMS is discussed.

We investigated the effects of intermittent hydrostatic pressure with various duration of resting period on changes in calcium ($Ca^{2+}$) concentration and adhesive forces of cells on substrates. The quantitive adhesive forces of cells were measured under various resting periods. When the pressure applied to the cells, the concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ increased. Under intermittent hydrostatic pressure, the concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ was maintained under a resting period of 15 min, while it was not decreased with other resting periods of less than 15 min. With a resting period of 15 min, the magnitudes of adhesive forces were significantly increase. In addition, the adhesive forces were measured with and without $Ca^{2+}$ chelating agents to evaluate the effect of $Ca^{2+}$ on cell adhesiveness. When $Ca^{2+}$ ions were chelated, the adhesive forces dramatically decreased, even under intermittent hydrostatic pressure. We conclude that $Ca^{2+}$ plays an crucial role in modulating the adhesive forces of cells, and that the concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ can be increased by intermittent hydrostatic stimuli.
Mechanical characteristics of flower stalks (scapes) of garlic such as shear forces, cutting forces, and modulus of elasticities were investigated as a preliminary research to develop a mechanical harvester of garlic bulbils. The average shear forces of garlic scapes was 0.642 N and the maximum and minimum shear forces were 1.42 and 0.25 N, respectively. The shear forces generally increased as the diameter of garlic scapes increased. There was no correlation between the modulus of elasticity and the diameter of garlic scapes and the average modulus of elasticity of garlic scapes was around $2.40\times10^7\;N/m^2$ There was also no correlation between the cutting force and the diameter of garlic scapes. As the downward speed of blade increased, the cutting force of garlic scapes decreased and reversed to increase. The cutting forces of the lower part garlic scapes were lower than those of the upper part. The range of cutting forces of the lower and the upper part of garlic scapes were 3.88-4.04 N and 4.29-4.93 N, respectively.
Impact force to a body during walking depends on walking speed, walking steps, the condition of the floors and shoes, and weight. The ground reaction force and the foot pressure can be measured instantaneous force easily, but it's difficult to find out the amount of transferring forces to the body. On the other hand, the acceleration has an advantage for analyzing the amount of transferring forces. However, most of studies about impact forces to the ground reaction during exercise have been limited to analyze instantaneous forces. The important thing is to evaluate characters and the amount of the impact force rather than the magnitude. Therefore, this study analyze the impact force using 3 axis acceleration in three dimensions (x; anterior-posterior, y; left-right and z; longitudinal axis) using three axis acceleration. As working speed increased, impact forces increased significantly. Impact forces on x axis and z axis are higher at lower limb than that of upper limb. However, impact force at the knee is higher than that of other parts on y axis regardless of walking speed significantly. In addition, relations of the impact forces as interaction of experiment factors as well as effect of each factor are analyzed.
The torque and unbalanced magnetic forces in permanent magnet machines are resultants of the tangential, axial and normal magnetic forces, respectively. Those are in general influenced by pole-teeth-winding configuration. A study of the torque and unbalanced magnetic forces of a small flux concentrating permanent magnet transverse flux machine (FCPM-TFM) in segmented compact structure is presented in this paper. By using FLUX3D software from Cedrat, Maxwell stress tensor has been solved. Finite element (FE-) magneto static study followed by transient analysis has been conducted to investigate the influence of unsymmetrical winding pattern, in respect to the rotor, on the performance of the FCPM-TFM. Calculating the magnetic field components in the air gap has required an introduction of a 2D grid in the middle of the air gap, whereby good estimations of the forces are obtained. In this machine, the axial magnetic forces reveal relatively higher amplitudes compared to the normal forces. Practical results of a prototype motor are demonstrated through the analysis.
The prediction of multimode flutter relies, to a larger extent than bimodal flutter, on accurate modeling of the self-excited forces since it is challenging to perform experimental validation by using aeroelastic tests for a multimode case. This paper sheds some light on the accuracy of predicted self-excited forces by comparing numerical predictions of self-excited forces with measured forces from wind tunnel tests considering the flutter vibration mode. The critical velocity and the corresponding flutter vibration mode of the Hardanger Bridge are first determined using the classical multimode approach. Then, a section model of the bridge is forced to undergo a motion corresponding to the flutter vibration mode at selected points along the bridge, during which the forces that act upon it are measured. The measured self-excited forces are compared with numerical predictions to assess the uncertainty involved in the modeling. The self-excited lift and pitching moment are captured in an excellent manner by the aerodynamic derivatives. The self-excited drag force is, on the other hand, not well represented since second-order effects dominate. However, the self-excited drag force is very small for the cross-section considered, making its influence on the critical velocity marginal. The self-excited drag force can, however, be of higher importance for other cross-sections.

The structural behavior of a tensile fabric structure, known as hypar, is investigated. Seismic-induced stresses in the fabric and axial forces in masts and cables are obtained using accelerograms recorded at different regions of the world. Time-history analysis using each recording are performed for the hypar by using finite element simulation. It is found that while the seismic stresses in the fabric are not critical for design, the seismic tensile forces in cables and the seismic compressive forces in masts should not be disregarded by designers. This is important, because the seismic design is usually not considered so relevant, as compared for instance with wind design, for these types ofstructures. The most relevant findings of this study are: 1) dynamic axial forces can have an increase of up to twice the static loading when the TFS is subjected to seismic demands, 2) large peak ground accelerations seem to be the key parameter for significant seismic-induced axial forces, but not clear trend is found to relate such forces with earthquakes and site characteristics and, 3) the inclusion or exclusion of the form-finding in the analysis procedure importantly affects results ofseismic stresses in the fabric, but not in the frame.
