  • The characteristics of a pulsating flow field from a heated block representing heat-dissipating electronic component in a channel have been numerically investigated. At the channel inlet a pulsating sinusoidal flow is imposed. The Reynolds number based on the channel height (H) is fixed at Re=500, and the forcing frequency is varied in the range of $0\leqSt\leq2$. Numerical results on the time-dependent flow field are obtained and averaged over a cycle of pulsation. The effect of the important governing parameters such as the Strouhal number is investigated in detail. The results indicate that the recirculating flow behind the block is substantially affected by the pulsation frequency. To characterize the periodic vortex shedding due to the inflow pulsation, numerical flow visualizations are carried out.

  • A model to predict the onset of significant void (OSV) in vertical flow between parallel plates has been developed. The model was compared to the experimental data of Whittle and Forgan (1967) and Dougherty et al. (1990), showing excellent agreement. The model was also compared with the Saha-Zuber(1974) correlation, which has been widely used in computer codes for nuclear safety analysis. The present theory is more conservative than this correlation, and further shows that, contrary to this correlation, the Stanton number is not solely related to the Peclet number. This may explain the large error margins required for the Saha-Zuber correlation, and also the scatter beyond the error margins specified by the authors. The steady-state OSV heat fluxes for equal and unequal heating cases between parallel plates were compared. The arithmetic mean of heat fluxes for unequal heating cases is less than the heat flux for equal heating cases. The result may imply that OSV is controlled by local thermal parameters rather than bulk parameters.

  • A truck refrigeration system using phase change material (PCM) is expected to have a lower noise level, reduced energy cost, and much lower local greenhouse gas emission. Recently, a forced convection type PCM refrigeration module has been developed. As the operation time increases, the PCM around the air inlet melts, because of a large temperature difference between the PCM and air. Therefore, the latent heat transfer area decreases and the heat transfer rate of the module decreases even though there is a lot of PCM which does not melt around the air outlet. A computational fluid dynamic modeling of the PCM refrigeration module was developed and validated by the experiment. Using the CFD, the design parameters, such as the mass flow rate of the air and roughness of the slab, were investigated to improve the heat transfer inhomogeneity. As a result, the adoption of partial roughness on the slabs improved the heat transfer inhomogeneity and reduced a fan power.

  • This paper investigated experimentally the performance of cooling systems using thermoelectric and piezoelectric modules for local heating and temperature control, such as a handheld electronic devices. The temperature distribution of the cooling region using thermoelectric modules was measured when the piezoelectric module was and was not with a frequency of 80Hz and 110Hz. The coefficients of performance were also calculated by the temperature results, and the thermo-flow phenomena in the cold region was visualized under the same conditions. The results of the temperature distribution measurements and the coefficient of performance showed that the cooling performance of the cooling system using thermoelectric modules can be improved by operating the piezoelectric module. In addition, when the piezoelectric module was operated based on the result of visualization in the cold region, which was formed by thermoelectric modules, the performance thermoelectric cooling was improved by the thermo-flow formed in the entire cold region as the forced convection of vibration was generated on the local cold region by the piezoelectric module.

  • This study was carried out numerically to investigate the air flow and thermal performance around single and parallel fin-tube heat exchangers and the cooling performance of the fluid inside the heat exchangers. In this study, the air velocity(1~7m/s), the pitch of fin(4, 6.1, 8, 11.3, 18.3, 44mm) and the diameter of fin(31, 33, 35, 37, 39mm) were varied. The flow rate of the water at the fin-tube heat exchanger inlet is 89cc/min and the water temperature is 353K. The air temperature at the upstream region of the heat exchanger is 300K. flow rate of the water at the fin-tube heat exchanger inlet is 80cc/min and the water temperature is 353K. It was found that the air pressure drop around single and parallel fin-tube heat exchangers was highly dependent on the air velocity and the fin pitch, but was independent of the fin diameter. Also, it was shown that pressure drop increased more the parallel arrangements than in single heat exchanger. The temperature difference of water at the inlet and outlet of the heat exchanger depended on the air velocity, the fin pitch and the fin diameter, and it was found that the parallel arrangement method further reduced the temperature of water. It was shown that the Nusselt number increased as the Reynolds number and the fin pitch increased, and decreased as the fin diameter increased.

  • A simplified model for the so-called ACRT(accelerated crucible rotation technique) Bridgman crystal growth was considered in order to investigate the principal effects of the periodic variation of angular velocity. Numerical solutions were obtained for Ro=0.5, Ra=4.236*10$_{6}$ and E=2.176*10$^{-3}$ . The effects of spin-up process combined with natural convection was investigated as a preliminary study. The spin-up time scale for the present problem was a little larger than that observed for homogeneous spin-up problems. Numerical results reveal that over a time scale of (H$^{2}$/.nu..omega.$_{f}$)$^{1}$2/ the forced convection due to the formation of Ekman layer predominates. When the state of rigid body rotation is attained, natural convection due to buoyancy emerges as the main driving force and them the steady-state is approached asymptotically. Based on our preliminary results with simple spin-up, several fundamental features associated with variation of rotation speed are successfully identified. When a periodic variation of angular velocity was imposed, the system response was also periodic. Due to effect of mixing, the heat transfer was enlarged. From the analysis of time-averaged Nusselt number along the bottom surface the effect of a periodic variation of angular velocity on the interface location could be indirectly identified.d.

  • Vapor Axial Deposition (VAD), one of optical fiber preform fabrication processes, is performed by deposition of submicron-size silica particles that are synthesized by combustion of raw chemical materials. In this study, flow field is assumed to be a forced uniform flow perpendicularly impinging on a rotating disk. Similarity solutions obtained in our previous study are utilized to solve the particle transport equation. The particles are approximated to be in a polydisperse state that satisfies a lognormal size distribution. A moment model is used in order to predict distributions of particle number density and size simultaneously. Deposition of the particles on the disk is examined considering convection, Brownian diffusion, thermophoresis, and coagulation with variations of the forced flow velocity and the disk rotating velocity. The deposition rate and the efficiency directly increase as the flow velocity increases, resulting from that the increase of the forced flow velocity causes thinner thermal and diffusion boundary layer thicknesses and thus causes the increase of thermophoretic drift and Brownian diffusion of the particles toward the disk. However, the increase of the disk rotating speed does not result in the direct increase of the deposition rate and the deposition efficiency. Slower flow velocity causes extension of the time scale for coagulation and thus yields larger mean particle size and its geometric standard deviation at the deposition surface. In the case of coagulation starting farther from the deposition surface, coagulation effects increases, resulting in the increase of the particle size and the decrease of the deposition rate at the surface.

  • The heat transfer characteristics from a solid sphere in a fluctuating air flow is simulated numerically in the range of the Reynolds numbers, $1\;{\leqslant}\;Re\;{\leqslant}\;40.$ Such a situation may be encountered in forced convection from a heated spherical particle in a sound field or oscillat-ing flow. The amplitude and phase delay in the heat transfer response to the flow oscillation are computed for a small amplitude flow. The instantaneous response of heat transfer is simulated for the large amplitude oscillation and compared with the quasi-steady response. The effect of the oscillation on the time - mean value in the local and overall heat transfer rate is discussed along with the change in the flow .field.

  • A heating flow discharged from a 4-way ceiling type indoor unit has been investigated using a PIV(particle image velocimetry) system For the PIV measurements, an experimental model of 1/10 scale with a transparent room was devised by satisfying the Archimedes number, which is generally used in case that the forced convection has the similar magnitude as the natural convection. To optimize the heating flow, several vane angles and vane control algorithms of cross and right angle controls were considered. Regarding the vane angle, the experimental results show that it should be less than $30^{\circ}$ to avoid re-suction flows which decrease the performance of the air-conditioner. At the vane angle of $30^{\circ}$, applying open/close control gives nae to more uniform distribution of the heating flow than without control. Especially, the cross-control seems to be satisfactory for the thermal comfort.

  • A boundary layer analysis is used to study the effects of Hall and ion-slip currents on the steady magneto-micropolar of a viscous incompressible and electrically conducting fluid over a horizontal plate. By means of similarity solutions, deviation of fundamental equations on the assumption of small magnetic Reynolds number are solved numerically by using the shooting method. The effects of various parameters of the problem, e.g. the magnetic parameter, Hall parameter, ion-slip parameter, buoyancy parameter and material parameter are discussed and shown graphically.
