  • It is generally analyzed that the subject area of grassland development seen in the North Korea area following unification with the South Korea includes hillland, h o w upland, tideland, and other expected grassland development areas. Possibilities and prospects for grassland development become higher if such grassland is developed by methods of environmental affinity suitable to the geographical and environmental conditions of North korea. First, the grassland development has to be based on grass species which are both cold resistant and suitable to the climate and the soil conditions of North korea. In addition, research on adaptable species, mixture combination selections and grassland establishment methods should be performed along with the accumulation of domestic data. The kind of research can be conducted in such areas as Yenben in China(Yenben University), Taekwanryung and Taeback mountains, where geographical features are similar to those of North korea. This research is possible because research can easily be given access to these locations. Hence, it is desirable to prepare for the unification of the Korean peninsula by caning out basic and applied research, and by way of accumulating data in the relevant fields.

  • The botanical, chemical composition and dry matter digestibility of collected herbage samples from sheep fitted esophageal fistula were compared to those of offered herbage samples by the sown pasture, oversown pasture and forest pasture at the 3rd flush stage (25cm grass height). Experimental fields was treated by one plot design and lasted from Aug. 1987 to Oct. 1987 at Chungnam National University, Daejon. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The botanical composition of collected herbage samples was different from offered herbage samples and this difference seemed to depend on diet selection. 2. The sheep consistantly selected more ladino clover than orchardgrass and tall fescue. 3. Crude protein content of collected herbage samples was high (P<0.01) and NDF content was low (P<0.01) on the sown and oversown pastures but forest diets contained more crude fat content (P<0.05) and less crude protein and NDF content (P<0.01) than offered herbage samples. 4. Dry matter digestibility of collected herbage samples was higher than offered herbage samples (P<0.0 1) and this difference was found out among pasture types.

  • For simple estimation of pasture production and nutritive value in relation to height of orchardgrass (Ductylis glomumtu L.), the experiment was carried out in a pasture mixture dominated by orchardgrass. The samples of grasses were harvested at the heights of about 30, 40, 50, 70 and 90 cm at the first harvest under different percentage of 100 (grass coverage): 0 (bareland), 80 : 20, 60 : 40, 40 : 60 and 20 : 80, respectively. As the height of orchardgrass was increased, fresh and dry matter (DM) yield were significantly increased. The regression equation between DM yield (Y) and height (X) was Y=ll. 5390 X- 146.60 (r=O. 9414 * * ). Also the higher bareland, the lower pasture production was observed. As the plant height at the first harvest was increased, the contents of crude (C) protein, C. fat, C. ash and relative feed value were markedly decreased. On the other hand, the contents of C. fiber, NFE, NDF. ADF, cellulose and lignin were significantly increased, respectively. The higher height, the lower DM digestibility was found. The equation between digestibility (Y) and height (X) was Y=- 0.2193 X+ 80.99 (r = - 0.9862**). Considering DM yield, digestibility and crude protein, the optimum height of orchardgrass at the first harvest was 59 to 67crn for better pasture production and nutritive value.

  • Even though grass species are one of major importance in livestock industry, the response of intergeneric hybridization of Lolium and Festuca and interspecific hybridization of Lolium m.X Lolium p. to Korean climatic condition has not been adequately documented. This reasearch was conducted to examine the growth characteristics and dry matter yield of Festulolium, cv. Felopa and C-Stamm N 66 and hybrid ryegrass, cv. Maja and Tetilelite. 1. The early growth of Italian ryegrass was better than that of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium. The plant length and height of Italian ryegrass were longer/taller than those of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium, but the number of tillers of Italian ryegrass was less than that of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium. 2. Festuloliu and hybrid ryegrass were more tolerant than Italian ryegrass to winter killing, 70-80% of tillers was survived. 3. After wintering, early spring growth of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium were better than that of Italian ryegrass. Dry matter yield of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium were more than that of Italian ryegrass. 4. Spikes of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium (C-Stamm N66) were more than those of Italian ryegrass. Seed yield per $m^2$ of hybrid ryegrass and Italian ryegrass were almost same, but that of Festuloliu was lower.

  • The ruminal solubility of copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), and zinc (Zn) in eight Philippine forages was studied. These forages were: 1) grasses: paragrass (Brachiaria mutica (Forsk.) Stapf), stargrass (Cynodon plectostachyum Pilger), and napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach.); 2) creeping legumes: calopogonium or calopo (Calopogonium muconoides Desv.) and centrocema (Centrocema pubescens Benth.); 3) tree lequmes: gliricidia or kakawate (Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp.), leucaena or ipil-ipil (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit.), and sesbania or katuray (Sesbania grandiflora (L.) Poir). Nylon bags with samples were incubated for 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72h in three rumen cannulated sheep fed with timothy hay (Phleum pratense L.) at 2% body weight/d. The 0-h bags were washed with deionized water. There were species differences (p < 0.05) on the different solubilities of trace elements. At O-h incubation, the trend of solubility was Mo (54%) > Zn (43%) > Cu (38.7%) > Mn (29.5%). At 3-h incubation, all the elements except Mn had an average solubility above 50%. Combining particulate passage rate (1.9%/h) and various trace elements disappearance rates, the effective ruminal solubilization (ERS) of trace elements were computed. The ERS across species ranged from 44.6 to 89.9% for Cu, 29.9 to 84% for Mn, 66 to 95.1% for Mo, and 30.1 to 82.3% for Zn resulting to a trend of Mo > Zn > Cu > Mn.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of four levels (0, 10, 20, 40 %) of sugar-beet pulp (SB pulp) supplementation to Italian ryegrass hay (IRG hay) on the fiber degradability of IRG hay in the rumen of goats. The following results were obtained: Degradabilities of DM, NDF, ADF and hemicellulose of IRG hay in the rumen increased significantly (p<0.05) by 10 % level supplementation of SB pulp to IRG hay. This was probably due to the increased numbers (p<0.05) of total viable bacteria, pectin-fermenting, xylan-fermenting and cellulolytic bacteria in the rumen in the increased supply of degradable pectic substances and hemicellulose at 10% level supplementation of SB pulp pectin. In 40% supplementation of SB pulp, ruminal pH was lowered by the fermentation of increased amount of molasses from SB pulp, resulting in the depression of growth of fiber fermenting bacteria and hence the decrease in degradabilities of cell wall fractions. It was suggested from this study that the sugar-beet pulp supplementation to forages at the level of 10% in the total diet increased fiber degradation of forage in the rumen of goats.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of propionic acid and wilting on fermentation quality of Italian ryegrass silage. Grass material was wilted for a day before ensiling and propionic acid(0. 0, 0. 2. 0. 5 and 0.8 7~ of fresh matter) was applicated at ensiling time. Chemical composition, fermentation acids, pH, microbial population and distribution of the nitrogen contents were evaluated. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The contents of dry matter and water soluble carbohydrate in the silage were increased by wilting, and crude fibre, NDF and ADF were decreased with increasing propionic acid levels. 2. The pH values of the silage increased by increasing DM content, but decreased with increasing propionic acid levels. Lactic acid content lowed in wilted silage, and acetic acid and butyric acid formation were decreased with increasing propionic acid levels. 3. Total nitrogen content in the silage was i n ~ r e a s e d ( ~ < . 05) by addition of propionic acid and wilting, and was the highest in the prewilting-0.8 Q propionic acid applicated silage. The production of NHBN was decreased with propionic acid and was the lowest in the 0.8 % treated silage. 4. The number of total bacteria and yeasts were estimated $10^6~10^7$, $10^2~10^3$ respectively. Moulds number were decreased with increasing propionic acid levels.

  • The more N fertilizer, the more grass proportion (58 8, 240 kg N/ha) and the less white clover (Trifolium repens) (6 %, 240 kg N) under grazing utilization. The proportion of white clover was maintained about 27 % at 60 kg N/ha/yr and weed proportion was reached 33 %. Under the condition of differentiated N rates, the proportion of white clover was ranged from 10 to 36 % at 20 kg N/ha/cut which was allocated after every grazing and it probably dependent on differentiated N rates rather than total amounts of N applied annually. 53-74 % of total dry matter yield were concentrated at 1st and 2nd growth under grazing system and there were no great differences in dry matter yield at 3rd, 4th, and 5th growth in comparison with the variations of N rates. There was very significant relationship between the proportions of white clover and the amounts of N uptaken by herbage upto 180 kg N/ha. About 138 kg N/ha were uptaken by herbage without N fertilizer but only with white clover (31 %) as a substitute of N. In the amounts of crude fiber and crude protein by differentiation of N fertilizer, there were no any great variations and liveweightgain during grazing periods was reached 1583 kg liveweightlha.

  • The overall objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of spraying sulfuric acid solution, and adding corn meal or molasses to reed canarygrass silage on digestibility of dry matter (DM) and fibrous components in ruminant. DM content of molasses or corn meal treated silages were higher than control. Whereas, sulfuric acid treated silage showed lower DM content compared with untreated control. Acid detergent fiber content was similar among treatments, but neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and hemicellulose concentration were higher in treated silages than those of control. Organic acids content were also increased in treated silages. In contrast, silage pH were lower in treated silages. Treated silages increased both rate and extent of DM and NDF in situ digestibility compared to control at all incubation times. Especially, 7 % molasses and 0.4 % sulfuric acid treated silages increased DM and NDF digestibility significantly after 12 hours of incubation compared with control. In nitro DM and NDF digestibility showed similar trend to in situ incubation. Also treated silages(mo1asses or sulfuric acid treated) incubated in situ had higher particle-associated carboxymethylcellulase activity throughout the incubation except 72 hours.
