Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the most important factor of gastric disease in clinical practice. Moreover, smoking, stress and a poor diet may be additive factors for gastric damage. With these factors, increasing infection of H. pylori triggers gastritis, gastric ulcers and gastric cancer. To develop a new protective agent, we are concerned with plant-derived extract. The extract of Coptis chinensis (C. chinensis) and its constituents were investigated to assess their protective activities against gastric damage. The C. chinensis extract showed a scavenging effect against 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and superoxide radicals, inhibition of H. pylori colonization and antiulcerogenic activities in rat. In particular, palmatine derived from C. chinensis was found to be the novel protective agent. It is better than the C. chinensis extract, berberine, a well-known constituent of C. chinensis. We suggest that palmatine from the root cortex of C. chinensis may be a good candidate for the development of new pharmaceuticals to prevent gastric disease.

The effect of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and its major metabolite, 3, 5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acid (BHT-acid) on the uptake of taurocholate into hepatocytes was studied using the primary culture of rat hepatocytes. Hepatocyte were isolated by an in situ collagenase perfusion technique and maintained as a monolayer in serum-free meadia for 24 hours before use. The uptake of taurocholate was saturable with an apparent Km of 12.8+2.8 MuM and Vmax of 0.18+0.01 nmol/mg/min. Both BHT and BHT-acid inhibited the hepatocellular uptake of taurocholate when they were added to the culture.

The chromosomal aberration of the trichothecene mycotoxins such as T-2 toxin (T-2), HT-2 toxin (HT-2), nivalenol (NIV) and deoxynivalenol (DON) which are one of the most important food borne contaminants produced by Fusarium species fungi, was investigated in the chinese hamster lung cells. These trichothecene mycotoxins showed high cytotoxicity in order of T-2, HT-2, NIV, and DON to the chinese hamster lung cells. Nevertheless high cytotoxicity of these trichothecene mycotoxins, no clastogenicity of T-2 and HT-2 in the range of 0.01-0.0025 ng/ml, of NIV in that of 0.3-0.075ng/ml, and of DON in that of 1.0-0.25 ng/ml was observed in both with and without metabolic activation system.

Recently, cancer chemoprevention with strategies using foods and medicinal herbs has been regarded as one of the most visible fields for cancer control. The genistein in soy, the American ginseng and the resveratrol in a grape are well known as that has antiproliferative properties in human breast cancer.(omitted)

In this GLP study, 4 study groups of 12 Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats/sex were given vehicle, or 1,000, 1,500, or 2,000 mg/kg/day Sophora Japonica Linne Seed Extract (SE) for 13 weeks. Standard endpoints in this study included mortality, clinical observations, body weight, food and water consumption, ophthalmoscopic examination, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemistry, organ weights, gross anatomic pathology and histopathology.(omitted)

LBD-005, a newly developed recombinant granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, was at dose levels of 0, 20, 80 and 320ng/kg/day administered subcutaneously to pregnat New Zealand White rabbits during the organogenetic period. The dams were subjected to caesarean section on day 28 of pregnancy. Effects of test substance on dams and embryonal development of fetuses were examined. No treatment-related changes in clinical signs and necropsy findings of dams were observed in all groups. At 80 and 320 ng/kg, a significant decrease in food consumption followed by a loss in body weight was found.

LBD-007, a newly developed recombinant human interferon alphaA, was at dose levels of 0.3 $\times$$10^6$ , 6 $\times$ $10^6$ and 12 $\times$ $10^6$ IU/kg/day administered subcutaneously to pregnant and subsequent delivered SpragueDawley rats from day 17 of gestation through day 21 of lactation. Effects of test substance on dams and growth, behaviour and mating performance of F1 offspring were examined. 1. No treatmene-related changes in clinical signs, food consumption, body weight, pregnant period and necropsy findings were observed in dams.
