Domestic production of agricultural machinery has come to be seen as appropriate entry route in the capital goods industry for most African countries, including Ghana, which has purely and strongly agricultural -based economics with a weak industrial infrastructure. Recent studies in Ghana do indicate that in addition to possessing technological capability in the manufacture of handtools, there is evidence of increased production of machinery for the primary food processing sector. Local manufacture of tractors and associated implements is embryonic, with an average domestic production of agricultural machinery in Ghana and analyses the available technologies and economic indicators in the local agricultural machinery industry. Areas for indicators in the local agricultural machinery industry. Areas for future development are identified.
Living culture, which is a pattern of peoples' everyday living, is influenced by the socio-economic conditions as well as ideology of the society. south and North Korean societies have been segregated during the past 50 years with different socio-those two societies share the same traditional culture. This project was developed to identify the differences in living cultures between South and North Korean societies, and to make suggestions for their successful integration. The first part of the project was concentrated on finding out the current living culture of North Korean families. References on North Korean living culture were reviewed, and North Korean movies related to family living were also analyzed. Besides, in depth interview was conducted with ten people who escaped from North Korean after 1990. The subjects with various demographic backgrounds were asked about lifestyles concerning food, clothing, housing, time management, consumption, child rearing, and family living that they experienced when they were in North Korea. The subjects were also asked to respond to the questionnaires measuring collectivism, materialism, and familism, which were developed for the study to find out the relationship between value orientation and lifestyles. This study revealed differences in many aspects of living cultures of South and North Korea, and relationships were suggested between value orientation and lifestyle. This exploratory study was intended to provided ground for more objective study with large number of subjects in the following year.
This study was performed to evaluate single and repeated-dose toxicities oj a new cophalosporin antibiotic agent IDC-7l81 in Sprague-Dawley rats. IDC-7181 was injected intravenously to rats at dose levels of 0, 3.2, 16, 80, 400 and 2,000 mg/kg/day for single-dose toxicity study and at dose levels of 0, 10, 50 and 250 mg/kg/day for 4-week repeated-dose toxicity study. In both studies, there were no dose-related changes in mortality clinical signs, body weight changes, food and water consumption, opthalmoscopy, organ weights, urine analysis, biochemical examination, and hematological findings of all animals treated with IDC-7l8l. Gross and histopathological findings revealed no evidence of specific toxicity related to IDC-7181. These results suggest that the intravenous maximum tolerated dose value of IDC-7181 may be over 250 mg/kg and $LD_{50}$ value may be over 2,000 mg/kg in rats.

The consumer acceptance of food is not only affected by the sensory characteristics of food but also by the non-food factors, including food experience, consumption frequency, and food attitudes. Therefore, food attitude scales such as the food neophobic scale, VARSEEK scale, Dutch restrained eating scale, health taste attitude scale, etc. have been developed and effectively used to predict consumer liking and behaviors. Since the globalization of Korean food is currently one of the hottest topics in the Korean food industry, the aim of this study was to identify the tastes and flavors that may represent Korean cuisine. Additionally, an attitudinal scale for Korean taste and flavors was developed, which can then be utilized to predict a consumer's liking of Korean food. In the first stage of the experiment, the representative taste and flavors of Korean cuisine was surveyed by a Korean culinary expert group (n=23) and general consumers (n=62). As a result of these surveys, 4 types of flavors, hot pepper flavor, 'goso' flavor, garlic flavor, and fermented flavor were shown to be the most representative flavors of Korean cuisine. Based on these results, the second stage of the experiment was carried out to develop an attitudinal scale for Korean style flavors. Eleven to 17 questionnaires were developed for each of the 4 types of flavors. The survey consisted of a total of 53 questionnaires and 154 female consumers and 158 male consumers participated in the survey. The data was analyzed by factor analysis. For each type of flavor, the final attitudinal questionnaires were selected based on the following criteria: 1. high absolute factor loading value, 2. carrying clear meaning of the corresponding flavor attitude, and 3. delivering the meaning sufficiently when translated into other language. The final Korean style flavor attitude scale consisted of 7 hot pepper flavor, 6 'goso' flavor, 6 garlic flavor, and 7 fermented flavor questionnaires. In the next step of this study, experiments will be carried out to validate the Korean style flavor attitude scale.

This study examined that have excellent antioxidant effect and expand the base of consumption of lotus leaves. We added 1%, 3%, and 5% of lotus leaf powder to traditional gochujang. pH was the highest in the gochujang with lotus leaf powder 1%(p<0.001). The moisture was significantly lower as the addition of lotus leaf powder increased(p<0.01). The viscosity was the lowest with lotus leaf powder 5% was found to be 15.61 dPa·s(p<0.001). In chromaticity, the L value was the highest in the control, the viscosity of gochujang became darker and lessened(p<0.001). The a value and b value showed the highest in the control(p<0.001). The salinity was the lowest in the gochujang with lotus leaf powder 3%(p<0.001). The sugar content decreased as the more amount of lotus leaf. Total phenol and total flavonoid contents was the highest in the gochujang with lotus leaf powder 5%. The DPPH radical scavenging ability was higher as the more amount of lotus leaf. Reducing power and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity was the highest in the gochujang with lotus leaf powder 3%. The gochujang with lotus leaf powder can be expected to have higher antioxidant activities and to be a health functional food.

The major problems of food crop cultivation in Korea are low yield of most crops except rice. inefficient cultivation techniques for aged farmers. and low international competibility. Therefore, development of cultivation techniques of food crops should aim the yield. quality improvement, labor reduction and production cost. The primary issue for increasing the yield of soybean, barely and wheat is to reduce the yield gap between the farmer's yield and recommended ones of experiment station. More advanced cultivation techniques needs to be developed. and/or the conventional breeding methods to be reconsidered. The newly developed labor-saving mechanized technique needs to reduce labor hours , and the cost of agricultural implements and machineries. In other words the labor-saving mechanized technique should be developed based on the improvement of total farming system as well as systemic fundamental innovation of cultural methods. The efficiency of solar energy use in food production of Korea in 1997 is as low as $0.52{\%}$ so there is much room to increase yield. It is recommendable that the concept of food Production should be changed to energy Producing efficiency Per unit area basis from volume and weight of food materials. Moreover, introduction of resonable cropping system is needed to increase yield of main crops, farmer's income, solar energy use efficiency, and decrease of land service expenditure. Current cropping system emphasized on economic crops. especially in vegetables , is not desirable for resonable use of arable land. stability of agricultural management and staple food crop self-sufficiency ratio. It is desirable to increase food crops . that are energy of carbohydrate and protein rich and land dependent crops. in cropping system. And the agronomist should develop the cultural methods to replace food crops for food self-sufficiency and stable farming management instead of economic crops in current cropping system. Low-input and environmentally-sound crop cultivation techniques, especially nitrogen-reducing culture technique which is directly related to food crop quality, also needs to be developed urgently. The extended cultivation of corn in upland and barely and wheat in lowland as a feed stuffs is recommended to prevent further decrease of food self-sufficiency ratio, which is mainly caused by the high reliance on imported feed grain. It is also considered that the calculation and presentation methods of standard agricultural income needs to be improved. The current calculation method uses unit land area of 10a regardless of crop kinds , characteristics of agricultural management and cultivation scale. So, it is apt to lead misunderstanding of farm income value. Therefore. it should show an income of average farmers for certain number of years. Research and developing system for food producing is not desirable because they are conducted currently individual crop and mono-culture basis. But actual agricultural income is usually earned by cropping system including upland and lowland. For example. the barley and wheat is usually cultivated in double cropping system. The cooperation among research institutes such as university agribusiness. government and farmers is indispensible. The public information and education on importance and consumption habit of food crops is necessary in Korean society to increase food self-sufficiency through nationwide cooperation.
Shinseoncho and kale were divided into stem [shinseoncho stems (SS) and kale stems (KS)] and leaf parts [shinseoncho leaves (SL) and kale leaves (KL)] and made into green vegetable juices for analyses of nutritional compositions and antioxidant activities. Higher values of total acidity were observed in SL (0.736%) and KL (0.841%) than in SS (0.417%) and KS (0.335%) (p<0.05). Neutral sugar content showed higher values in SS (21.740 mg/mL) and SL (18.657 mg/mL) when compared with KS (1.497 mg/mL) and KL (1.452 mg/mL) (p<0.05). Protein content showed the highest value in SL (7.610 mg/mL) (p<0.05), while SS (0.403 mg/mL) and KS (0.403 mg/mL) showed similar lower values. Total polyphenol contents of SL (423.139 ${\mu}g/mL$) was significantly higher value (p<0.05) than those of other samples, which occurred in the following order: SL>KL (218.494 ${\mu}g/mL$) KS (107.269 ${\mu}g/mL$)>SS (75.894 ${\mu}g/mL$). KL exerted the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (84.834%) (p<0.05), which occurred in the following order: KL>SL (63.473%)>KS (52.894%)>SS (35.443%). ABTS radical scavenging activity showed that SL (66.088%) and KL (38.511%) had higher scavenging activities, whereas SS (7.695%) and KS (9.609%) demonstrated to be lower activities (p<0.05). In general, leaf parts had much higher antioxidant activities as well as total polyphenol contents than those of the stem parts. In conclusion, shinseoncho and kale, particularly their leaf parts, offer antioxidant properties in green vegetable juices and the consumption of them may be beneficial as a nutrition source and in health protection.
Background: Han River estuary is a national wetland reserve near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between South Korea and North Korea. This trans-boundary estuary area has been well preserved and shows distinctive plant communities along the salinity gradient. To elucidate energy flows and nutrient cycling in this area, we studied trophic relations between the dominant sesarmid crab, Sesarma dehaani, and food sources in three wetlands with different environments along the estuarine gradients. Results: Stable isotope signatures (${\delta}^{13}C$ and ${\delta}^{15}N$) of the crabs were significantly different among the sites and body size classes. Seasonal changes in ${\delta}^{13}C$ of small crabs were distinct from those of large individuals at all the sites. The isotopic values and fatty acid profiles of the crabs were more different among the sites in September than in May. In May, large-sized crabs utilized more plant materials compared to other dietary sources in contrast to small-sized crabs as revealed by a stable isotope mixing modeling, whereas contributions to diets of crabs were not dominated by a specific diet for different body size in September except at site 1. Based on PCA loadings, fatty acid content of $18:3{\omega}3$, known as a biomarker of plant materials, was the main factor to separate size groups of crabs in May and September. The ${\delta}^{13}C$ value of sediment had high correlation with those of small-sized crabs at site 1 and 2 when 1-month time lag was applied to the value for crabs during the surveyed period. Conclusions: Based on the stable isotope and fatty acid results, the consumption habits of S. dehaani appear to be distinguished by sites and their size. In particular, smaller size of S. dehaani appears to be more dependent on fewer food sources and is influenced more by the diet sources from the sediments in Han River estuary.
Dongchunghacho rice, produced by cultivating Dongchunghacho fungus on rice, could be an effective functional food because it offers added value to rice and thus increases rice consumption. However, the physiological effect of Dongchunghacho rice has not been reported yet although there is increasing consumers demand. Therefore, we investigated the effect of Dongchunghacho rice (unpolished rice cultivated with Cordyceps militaris) on lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemic rats. Forty of 8 wk-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups after a 1 week of adaptation period and fed either a normal diet (66% polished rice diet, NC), high fat (12 g/100 g)-high cholesterol (1 g/100 g) diet with 53% polished rice (HC), or high fat-high cholesterol diets supplemented with 30% of the total rice as either unpolished rice (DR) or Dongchunghacho rice (DR). After 4 weeks, rats fed the Dongchunghacho rice diet with high fat and cholesterol had dramatically lower plasma LDL cholesterol concentrations and atherogenic indexes and higher plasma HDL cholesterol levels compared with the rats consuming polished rice or unpolished rice with high fat and cholesterol diet. Dongchunghacho rice led to less total lipid and total cholesterol accumulation in liver. However, these significant reductions in plasma or hepatic lipid profiles were not closely correlated with fecal total lipid or total cholesterol excretion. The plasma concentration of total cholesterol and triglycerides were not affected by Dongchunghacho rice. This hypolipidemic effect of Dongchunghacho rice seemed to be unrelated to unpolished rice itself, because the plasma and hepatic lipid profiles of DR group were not different from that of the HC group. These results suggest that unpolished rice containing cultivated Cordyceps militaris can improve plasma and hepatic lipid profiles in rats fed with high fat-high cholesterol diet.
Polyphenols may be primarily responsible for the health benefits associated with tea consumption. However, the benefits of the tea polyphenols to bone health have not been studied well. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Oolong tea on bone mineral density and bone-related markers in ovariectomized rats. Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly assigned to Sham-Control, Sham-Oolongtea, Ovx-Control, and Ovx-Oolongtea groups. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) were estimated by using PIXImus (GE Lunar Co, Wisconsin.) in the spine and femur. After 6 weeks of the experimental diets, body weight gain, food intake, and food efficiency ratio (FER) were significantly higher in Ovx groups than in Sham groups regardless of diet. The serum concentration of calcium, phosphorus, ALP, and calcitonin were not significantly different according to Oolong tea supplementation. There were no significant differences in urinary calcium and phosphorus excretion between all groups. The urinary DPD crosslinks value was significantly higher in the Ovx-Control group than in the Sham-Oolongtea group. Spine BMD, femur BMD, and spine BMD per body weight were significantly lower in the Ovx groups than in the Sham groups regardless of diet. In the OVX group, spine BMC per body weight, femur BMD per body weight and femur BMC per body weight were significantly higher in the Oolong tea groups than in Control groups. It was concluded that Oolong tea supplementation positively influenced bone health in ovariectomized rats.
