  • This paper proposes a method for decomposing a Hangul glyph of outline fonts into its initial, medial and final components using statistical-structural information. In a font family, the positions of components are statistically consistent and the stroke relationships of a Hangul character reflect its structure. First, we create the component histograms that accumulate the shapes and positions of the same components. Second, we make pixel clusters from character image based on pixel direction probabilities and extract the candidate strokes using position, direction, size of clusters and adjacencies between clusters. Finally, we find the best structural match between candidate strokes and predefined character model by relaxation labeling. The proposed method in this paper can be used for a study on formative characteristics of Hangul font, and for a font classification/retrieval system.

  • Existing character recognition algorithm recognize characters in simple conditional. It has the disadvantage that recognition rates often drop drastically when input document image has low quality, rotated text, various font or size text because of external noise or data loss. In this paper, proposes the optical character recognition algorithm which using bicubic interpolation method for the catalog retrieval when the input image has rotated text, blurred, various font and size. In this paper, applied optical character recognition algorithm consist of detection and recognition part. Detection part applied roberts and hausdorff distance algorithm for correct detection the catalog of book. Recognition part applied bicubic interpolation to interpolate data loss due to low quality, various font and size text. By the next time, applied rotation for the bicubic interpolation result image to slant proofreading. Experimental results show that proposal method can effectively improve recognition rate 6% and search-time 1.077s process result.

  • As PDA, IMT-2000, and e-Book are developed and popular in these days, the number of users who use these products has been increasing. However, available memory size of these machines is still smaller than that of desktop PCs. In these products, TrueType fonts have been increased in demand because the number of users who want to use good quality fonts has increased, and TrueType fonts are of great use in Windows CE products. However, TrueType fonts take a large portion of available device memory, considering the small memory sizes of mobile devices. Therefore, it is required to reduce the size of TrueType fonts. In this paper, two-phase compression techniques are presented for the purpose of reducing the sire of hangul bitmap data embedded in TrueType fonts. In the first step, each character in bitmap is divided into initial consonant, medial vowel, and final consonant, respectively, then the character is recomposed into the composite bitmap. In the second phase, if any two consonants or vowels are determined to be the same, one of them is removed. The TrueType embedded bitmaps in Hangeul Wanseong (pre-composed) and Hangul Johab (pre-combined) are used in compression. By using our compression techniques, the compression rates of embedded bitmap data for TrueType fonts can be reduced around 35% in Wanseong font, and 7% in Johab font. Consequently, the compression rate of total TrueType Wanseong font is about 9.26%.

  • A locating text technique capable of locating and extracting text blocks in various Web images is presented here. Until now this area of work has been ignored by researchers even if this sort of text may be meaningful for internet users. The algorithms associated with the technique work without prior knowledge of the text orientation, size or font. In the work presented in this research, our text extraction algorithm utilizes useful edge detection followed by histogram analysis on the genuine characteristics of letters defined by text clustering region, to properly perform extraction of the text region that does not depend on font styles and sizes. By a number of experiments we have showed impressively acceptable results.

  • Example-based super resolution(EBSR) is a method to reconstruct high-resolution images by learning patch-wise correspondence between high-resolution and low-resolution images. It can reconstruct a high-resolution from just a single low-resolution image. However, when it is applied to a text image whose font type and size are different from those of training images, it often produces lots of noise. The primary reason is that, in the patch matching step of the reconstruction process, input patches can be inappropriately matched to the high-resolution patches in the patch dictionary. In this paper, we propose a new patch matching method to overcome this problem. Using an image observation model, it preserves the correlation between the input and the output images. Therefore, it effectively suppresses spurious noise caused by inappropriately matched patches. This does not only improve the quality of the output image but also allows the system to use a huge dictionary containing a variety of font types and sizes, which significantly improves the adaptability to variation in font type and size. In experiments, the proposed method outperformed conventional methods in reconstruction of multi-font and multi-size images. Moreover, it improved recognition performance from 88.58% to 93.54%, which confirms the practical effect of the proposed method on recognition performance.

  • The current method for pavement sign marking operations is labor-intensive and very dangerous due to the exposure of workers to passing traffic. It also requires blocking traffic for a long period of time resulting serious traffic jam. This paper deals with the development of a robotic system for automating the pavement sign painting operations. The robotic system consists of gantry frame equipped with transverse drive rail and automatic paint spray system. The workspace of the gantry robot is extended to one-lane width with the transverse rail system. This research also includes the development of font data structures that contain the shape information of pavement signs, such as Korean letters, English letters and symbols. The robot path is generated with this font data through the procedures of scaling up/down and partitioning the signs to be painted depending on the workspace size.
