  • The effect of the hydraulic residence time (HRT) for the removal of aquarium waste, such as protein, total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity were investigated by using a foam separator Protein, TSS and turbidity removal efficiencies were increased with the increase of hydraulic residence time. The optimum hydraulic residence time was 0.5 min, and the highest protein and TSS removal rates were $14.4\;g/L{\cdot}day\;and\;38.9\;g/L{\cdot}day,$ respectively. The tendency of turbidity removal rate and efficiency was similar to that of protein.

  • The characteristics of foam generation were assessed for freshwater and seawater using a foam generator. Both in freshwater and seawater, the height of the foam layer increased with initial protein concentrations. The height of the foam layer also increased with pore size of the air distributor. The optimum superficial air velocities (SAV) in freshwater and seawater were 0.84 cm/sec and 0.6 cm/sec, respectively. The height of the foam layer was the highest in pH 3 in freshwater and in the region of pH 5-7 in seawater. The height of the foam layer increased with $NaHCO_3$ concentration in freshwater, and $NaHCO_3$ concentration had little effect in seawater. Removal efficiencies of total suspended solid (TSS) and turbidity decreased with an increase of initial protein concentrations in a batch foam separator both in freshwater and seawater.

  • A bath foam separator has been used to separate yeast cells from their culture broth without the use of any surface-active agents. The cell separation ratio was improved in proportion to a separator level and nitrogen flow rates. Percentage of yeast removal after 3 minutes of operation was more than 90. The cell separation ratio was also improved by the addition of 0.2g/l $CaCl_2$.

  • The performances of a parallel current air driven type foam separator were evaluated in the pilot-scale recirculating aquaculture system. The system was stocked with Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) at an initial rearing densities of $2\%$, $5\%$ and $7\%$ of water volume of rearing tank and reared for 15, 30, 35 days, respectively. The condensated volume of effluent foam was increasing with increased rearing density. As increasing rearing density from $2\%$ to $7\%$, the protein concentration in rearing tank was increased from 16.6 g/$m^3$ to 21,9 g/$m^3$ and the removal amount of protein through foam separator as increased from 0.99 g/day to 2.5 g/day. But protein concentration ratio in the foam was decreased from 3.2 to 1.9. Changes of the removal amount and the concentration ratios of total suspended solid (TSS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD_cr.) were similar to proteins. The highest concentration ratios of TSS and COD_cr. were 10.2 and 8.4 at 2$2\%$ of rearing density.

  • Effect of initial protein concentration on the protein removal rate was assessed for seawater aquarium using a foam separator. Protein removal rate was increased and removal efficiency was decreased with the increase of initial protein concentration. Enrichment ratio was decreased and foam generation rate was increased with the increase of initial protein concentration. Total suspended solids (TSS) removal rate was increased with the increase of initial protein concentration, and TSS removal efficiency was decreased with the increase of initial protein concentration. Turbidity removal rate and removal efficiency were increased with the increase of initial protein concentration.

  • An integrated recirculating aquaculture system suitable to our country's situation was designes and developed, The integrated recirculating aquaculture system consisting of a double drain type rearing tank of the $2.5 m^3$, a sedimentation tank for removal of settleable solids, a floating bead filter for the removal of suspended solids, a foam separator for removal of fine particles and a rotating biological contactor for the nitrification was designed and manufactured. The integrated recirculating aquaculture system was stocked with nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) at $2\%$ rearing density for 2 weeks. Feed coefficient was 1.4 and average daily growth rate was $0.64\%$ in the system for 2 weeks.

  • The behavior of the biological water treatment process on start-up operation was evaluated in the integrated recirculating aquaculture system consisting of a double drain type rearing tank ($2.5 m^3$), a sedimentation tank, a floating bead filter, a foam separator and a rotating biological contactor. A system was stocked with nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) at an initial rearing density of $2\%$ for 2 weeks for acclimated rotating biological contactor. The total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) level increased to $13.6 g/m^3$ on day 4 after adding feed and was decreased to $0.3 g/m^3$ on day 7. The total suspended solid was completely removed during overall experimental period.

  • The performances of fish culture were evaluated in the integrated recirculating aquaculture system consisting of a double drain type rearing tank ($2.5 m^3$), a sedimentation tank, a floating bead filter, a foam separator and a rotating biological contactor. A system was stocked with nile tilapia at an initial rearing densities of $5\%$ (A), $5\%$ (B) and $7\%$ (C) oyer 30 days. Feed coefficient was 1.62, 1,79 and 1.80 and average daily growth rate was $0.452\%$, 0.u5% and $0.423\%$, respectively. The level of TAN was maintained below $1 g/m^3$ for $5\%$ of initial rearing density and $2-4 g/m^3$ for $7\%$. The dissolved oxygen level ($2-4 g/m^3$) was not optimum but should not be inhibitory to fish growth. The total suspended solid was completely removed during overall experimental period.
