  • The objectives of this study are to investigate the suitability of various coal fly ashes and incineration ashes for zeolite synthesis. Zeolite P and hydroxysodalite are produced from coal fly ash and paper sludge incineration ash. When soluble and acid-soluble materials in incineration fly ash are removed by the water washing or acid washing before hydrothermal synthesis, hydroxysodalite can be produced. The factors to make solid-liquid separation difficult are the calcium component and the unburned carbon in ash.

  • In most coal fired power plants, fly ashes collected from each of hoppers in the electrostatic precipitator are transported and stored in a silo. However the properties of the fly ashes collected from each of hoppers in electrostatic precipitator varies with the distance of the collection field from the boiler. The more distance hopper gets fly ash with larger specific surface area. Therefore, in electrostatic precipitator the hopper itself is expected to have the effect of classifying fly ashes. This study examines the physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of fly ash, collected from each of hoppers attached to an electrostatic precipitator in the coal fired power plant and looks into the possibility of the electrostatic precipitator being used as a classifier. Also, the study reviewed the possibility of acquiring high quality fly ash.

  • This study analyzed solid wastes generated from a school. The emission potential of hazardous pollutants generated from incineration of the school solid wastes (SSWs) was analyzed. Components of the SSWs were identified and the SSWs were classified into combustible and non-combustible wasts. The combustible wastes consisted of papers of 56.5^ plastics of 30.2% woods of 7.1% and fibers of 6.1% based on weight of the wastes. The moisture content and the ash content of the combustible wastes were 18~20% and 11~13% respectively. The combustible wastes of the SSWs were incinerated by using a small-scale incinerator. Fly and bottom ashes and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were collected from the incineration. Also the metal leaching experiments on the fly and bottom ashes were performed, In analysis of metals leached from the ashes the total amounts of metals leached in the acid solution (pH=3) were much greater than those in the neutral solution (pH=5.8~6.2) For the same amounts of the fly and bottom ashes the total amounts of metals leached from the fly ashes were much greater than those from the bottom ashes. The VOCs produced from incineration of the SSWs consisted of aromatics of 42.1% aliphatic alkenes of 26.3% oxidized forms of 17.3% and aliphatic alkanes of 14.3% In addition the considerable amounts of hazardous air pollutants (e.g benzene chloro-benzene and chloro-alkanes) and compounds (e. g, aliphatic alkenes) with high potential of ozone or photochemical smog formation were identified from the incineration experiment of the SSWs.

  • Analysis of fly ashes from the MSW incinerators was carried out using XRF, ICP-MS and ICP-AES. It was found that the major elements of fly ash were Ca, K, Na, Si, Al, S, Cl and O by the XRF analysis. The XRD spectra showed that the fly ashes were mainly consisted with the chlorides, hydroxides, carbonates and also oxides of former elements. For the determination of minor elements such as Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, and Cd, we used ICP-AES and ICP-MS after microwave digestion and the results were compared with the result of XRF.

  • This paper demonstrates the effects of dust electrical resistivity on electrostatic precipitability. The effects of gas temperature, velocity and humidity on the collection efficency were considered by used of coal fly ashes from fluidized bed combustion boiler. The experiments for collection efficiency were carried out in the pilot plant. The ashes which have non-spherical geometry and high electrical resistivity were used. Electrical resistivity is an important property for the collection efficiency in the electrostatic precipitators. Fly ash resistivity as a function of temperature up $350{\circ}C$ and water concentration(up to 15%) has been experimentally investigated using the resistivity test equipment consisted of the movable electrode, dust cup, and furnace. As the resistivity of fly ash in the operating temperature($150{\circ}C$) of an electrostatic precipitator was measured higher than $1010{\Omega}{\cdot}$cm, flue gas conditioning in the electrostatic precipitator to reduce the resistivity of fly ash is required.

  • Recently, coal ashes which are increasing annually are buried in ash ponds as industrial wastes. However, buried coal ashes can pollute ground water and ground due to leachate from coal ashes, which are serious environmental problem. Even though a lot of researches on recycling of coal ashes have been conducted, only 15% of coal ashes are recycled up to now. And those recycled coal ashes are not bottom ashes but fly ashes. So in this study, it was proved that Bottom Ash can be used as an alternative material to O.P.C(Ordinary Portland Cement) according to laboratory test results and test field construction. Also bottom ash is more economical and environmentally friendly than O.P.C.

  • Recycling industrial wastes such as fly ash from a coal burning heat power plant and shell from an oyster farming were investigated to prevent environment contamination as well as to enhance the value of recycling materials. In this study, the lightweight aggregates and the red bricks were fabricated from fly ashes with other inorganic materials and wastes. The starting materials of the lightweight aggregate were fly ash powder and water glass, and the compacts of these materials were heat treated at $1100^{\circ}C$. The fabricated lightweight aggregates had low bulk density, $0.9-1.2\;g/cm^3$, hence floated on the water and had the strength of 7.0-11.0 MPa and the modulus of 2900-3300 MPa which indicates it has enough strength as the aggregate. Another type of the light weight aggregate was prepared from fly ashes, shell powders and clays. The bulk density, porosity, and compressive strength of these aggregates were $1.19-1.34\;g/cm^3,\;18.3{\sim}56.1%$ and 5-12 MPa, respectively. The addition of a small amount of fly ash powder prevented hydration of the light weight aggregates. The red brick was also fabricated from the fly ash containing materials. It is suitable for the brick facing of a building as it has moderate strength and low water absorption rate.

  • The aim of the research is to provide rheological properties of cement paste with various qualities of coal ash including fly ash, raw ash, and reject ash. Generally, fly ash is the well known supplementrary cementitious materials for concrete and is used to improve various properties. Although fly ash is obtained as a byproduct of fire powder plant, still reject ash is wasted from raw ash. In this research, thus, to provide a fundamental information on using not only fly ash but also raw ash or reject ash for cementitious materials, a rheological properties of cement paste was studied with three different coal ash. This research was conducted from particle conditions of three different coal ashes to rheological properties in cement paste phase. According to the expeirment, reject ash was consisted with large and coagulated particles although fly ash was consisted with a small and spherical shaped particles. based on the particle conditions of various coal ashes, rheological behaviors were tested, and it was shown as the coal ashes improved the fluidity of cement paste. Specifically, depending on the particle distributions of cement paste, it is considered that the viscosity of paste can be controlled.

  • Through alkaline hydrothermal activation processes, zeolite minerals were synthesized from fly ashes produced at Youngwol and Boryoung power plants. The syntheses were performed in a closed teflon vessel with a teflon-coated magnetic bar for continuous stirring during the reaction periods. The experiments were caeeied out at three different reaction temperatures ($100^{\circ}C$,$200^{\circ}C$, and $250^{\circ}C$), with varying NaOH concentations (0.5~8N) and reaction time (24 to 288 hours). Mineralogical characterization of the reaction products indicated that Na-p1, analcime, and hydroxysodalite were dominant zeolites formed from the both fly ashes at the given experimental conditions, The highest amount of zoelites produced from the Youngwol and Boryoung fly ash were:60 and 45wt%for Na-P1, 70 and 45wt% for analicime, 50 and 40wt% for hydroxysodalite, respectively. A small amount of zeolite A was present in NaP-dominant dample is about 250 meq/100g. This suggests the possibility of its utilization as an ion-absorbent.
