  • An advanced direct torque control (DTC) with pulse width modulation (PWM) method is presented in this paper. The duty ratio calculation of the selected voltage vector is based on the voltage functions of the selected voltage vector according to the sector angle. The proposed DTC uses a conventional DTC scheme with six sector divisions and switching rules. However, the winding voltages are supplied by the PWM approach. Furthermore, the duty ratio of the switching voltage vector is determined by the flux, torque error, and motor speed. The base voltage that shall determine the duty ratio can be calculated by approximate voltage functions according to the voltage angle. For the calculation of base voltages, second-order quadratic functions are used to express the output voltage of the selected voltage vector according to voltage angle. The coefficients for the second-order quadratic functions are selected by the voltage vector, which is determined by the switching rules of the DTC. In addition, the voltage functions are calculated by the coefficients and voltage angle between the voltage vector and rotor position. The switching voltages from the calculated duty ratio can supply the proper torque and flux to reduce the ripple and error. The proposed control scheme is verified through practical experimental comparisons.

  • In this paper, with loosely coupled transformer Relies-parallel resonant type DC/DC converter is analyzed and adopted to the power source of a TFLM(Transverse Flux Linear Motor). To get more efficient operating mode of the series-parallel resonant type DC/DC converter, theoretical analysis using normalized parameters are accepted. The analysis includes a specially made ferrite transformer with two separately wound half cores in order to evaluate analytically and experimentally the changes in magnetizing the leakage fluxes and inductances caused by the distance between the halves. The proposed converter must be operated in switching Pattern III among the three switching patterns for the Zero Voltage Switching operation. According to Pulse Frequency Modulation(PFM) control method, the output voltage of the proposed circuit can be controlled. The results of the theoretical development are compared with practical measurements from a prototype system.

  • We fabricated rapid single-flux-quantum RS flip-flop circuits with and without Y$_1$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$(YBCO) ground plane. The circuit consists of SNS-type ramp-edge Josephson junctions that have cobalt-doped YBCO and Sr$_2$AITaO$_6$(SAT) for barrier layer and insulator layer, respectively. The fabricated Josephson junction showed a typical RSJ-like current-voltage(I-V) characteristics above 50K. We sucessfuly demonstrated RS flip-flop at temperatures around 50K. The RS flip-flop fabricated on ground plane showed more definite set and reset state in voltage-flux(V-${\phi}$) modulation curve for read SQUID, which may be attributed to a shielding effect of the YBCO ground plane.

  • In this paper, an advanced PWM modulation strategy for driving a variable-speed induction motor is introduced. According to this method, the technique of efficiently eliminating harmonics component is achived. A switching pattern was computed making use of the near-proportionality of voltage and frequency in AC machines operating with constant flux. At low magnitudes and low frequencies of the foundamental, many more harmonics are eliminated than at high magnitudes and frequencies. In order to keep the inverter switching frequency constant over the output frequency range, chopping times diminishes as the frequency of the fundamental increases.

  • In this paper, comparative analysis of offset voltage PWM method and $V_{max}-V_{mid}$ PWM method for three-phase matrix converter is addressed by using a simple analytical and graphical method. Offset voltage PWM method calculates PWM patterns in terms of offset voltage and variable slope of carrier, and it simplifies matrix converter modulation algorithm significantly. $V_{max}-V_{mid}$ PWM method generates patterns by using two phases and maintaining a remaining phase to base phase, and it is implemented in the industrial products. The most important performance criterion of modulation method is a magnitude of current ripples and it is analytically modelled. The graphical illustration of theses complex multivariable functions make per-carrier cycle and per fundamental cycle behavior of two PWM methods understood. Two modulation methods are analysed with the analytical formulas and graphics, and the analysis shows offset voltage PWM method is superior to $V_{max}-V_{mid}$ PWM method with respect to input current ripples and output voltage ripples.

  • Torque ripple content and variable switching frequency operation of conventional direct torque control (DTC) are reduced by the integration of space vector modulation (SVM) into DTC. Integration of space vector modulation to conventional direct torque control known as SVM-DTC. It had been more frequently used method in renewable energy and machine drive systems. In this paper, SVM-DTC is used to control the rotor side converter (RSC) of a wind driven doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) because of its advantages such as reduction of torque ripples and constant switching frequency operation. However, flux and torque ripples are still dominant due to distorted current waveforms at different operations of the wind turbine. Therefore, to smoothen the torque profile a Neural Network Controller (NNC) based SVM-DTC has been proposed by replacing the PI controller in the speed control loop of the wind turbine controller. Also, stability analysis and simulation study of DFIG using process reaction curve method (RRCM) are presented. Validation of simulation study in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment of proposed wind driven DFIG system has been performed by laboratory developed prototype model. The proposed NNC based SVM-DTC yields superior torque response and ripple reduction compared to other methods.

  • We present the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) analysis on the quasi-periodic modulation of SMC X-1. SMC X-1, consisting of a neutron star and a massive companion, exhibits superorbital modulation with a period varying between ~40 d and ~65 d. We applied the HHT on the light curve observed by the All-Sky Monitor onboard Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) to obtain the instantaneous frequency of the superorbital modulation of SMC X-1. The resultant Hilbert spectrum is consistent with the dynamic power spectrum while it shows more detailed information in both the time and frequency domains. According to the instantaneous frequency, we found a correlation between the superorbital period and the modulation amplitude. Combining the spectral observation made by the Proportional Counter Array onboard RXTE and the superorbital phase derived in the HHT, we performed a superorbital phase-resolved spectral analysis of SMC X-1. An analysis of the spectral parameters versus the orbital phase for different superorbital states revealed that the diversity of $n_H$ has an orbital dependence. Furthermore, we obtained the variation in the eclipse profiles by folding the All Sky Monitor light curve with orbital period for different superorbital states. A dip feature, similar to the pre-eclipse dip of Her X-1, can be observed only in the superorbital ascending and descending states, while the width is anti-correlated with the X-ray flux.

  • This paper presents a robust and speed-sensorless stator flux estimation for induction motor direct torque control. The proposed observer is based on sliding mode approach. Stator electrical equations are used in the rotor orientation reference frame to eliminate the observer dependence on rotor speed. Lyapunov's concept for systems stability is adopted to confine the observer gain. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the observer to parameter mismatch is recovered with an adaptation technique. The nonlinearities of the pulse width modulation voltage source inverter are estimated and compensated to enhance stability at low speeds. Therefore, a new method based on the model reference adaptive system is proposed. Simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

  • Three phase PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) converter of the small-scale wind power system is able to charge battery under the rated wind speed regions. However, it is impossible to control output power of converter at the over win speed region because back-EMF(Electro Motive Force) of PMSG(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator) is higher than the battery terminal voltage of PMSG is reduced. However, the cut-off wind speed exists although battery charging algorithm is implemented by flux weakening control method. Therefore, this paper performs analysis of other factors which affects limitation wind speed. The validity of the analysis are verified through simulation.

  • In most inverter/converter applications SVPWM method is a preferred approach since it shows good characteristics in linear modulation range and waveform quality. In this paper, we propose a new carrier based SVPWM method for multi-level system, First, we survey the conventional carrier based SVPWM method, and investigate the problem of the conventional one for the multi-level system with the focus on the switching frequency harmonic flux trajectories. Finally, we propose a new carrier based SVPWM method that can reduce harmonic distortion. Simulation and experimental results are given for verification of the proposed SVPWM method.
