  • An actuator using a permanent magnet and solenoid is proposed and designed in this paper. Its design concept is composed of a driving force generation, a guide mechanism, and a symmetric structure. At first, Driving Force generation uses a concept that is a change efflux by using a permanent magnet and solenoid. A permanent flux is generated by a permanent magnet. Changeable flux is created by a variable current flowing through coil such the solenoid. The direction of this flux is changed due to current flowing through coils. The combination of permanent and changeable fluxes make various flux densities between yokes of moving part and fixed yokes. And then, the flux densities create forces(F), which are used to drive this actuator, in lower and upper gap. In this actuator ...

  • Spatially rotating magnetic fields have been observed in the solar wind and in the Earth's magnetopause as well as in reversed field pinch (RFP) devices. Such field configurations have a similarity with extended current layers having a spatially varying plasma pressure instead of the spatially varying guide field. It is thus expected that magnetic reconnection may take place in a rotating magnetic field no less than in an extended current layer. We have investigated the spontaneous evolution of a collisionless plasma system embedding a rotating magnetic field with a two-and-a-half-dimensional electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. In magnetohydrodynamics, magnetic flux can be decreased by diffusion in O-lines. In kinetic physics, however, an asymmetry of the velocity distribution function can generate new magnetic flux near O- and X-lines, hence a dynamo effect. We have found that a magnetic-flux-reducing diffusion phase and a magnetic-flux-increasing dynamo phase are alternating with a certain period. The temperature of the system also varies with the same period, showing a similarity to sawtooth oscillations in tokamaks. We have shown that a modified theory of sawtooth oscillations can explain the periodic behavior observed in the simulation. A strong guide field distorts the current layer as was observed in laboratory experiments. This distortion is smoothed out as magnetic islands fade away by the O-line diffusion, but is soon strengthened by the growth of magnetic islands. These processes are all repeating with a fixed period. Our results suggest that a rotating magnetic field configuration continuously undergoes deformation and relaxation in a short time-scale although it might look rather steady in a long-term view.

  • The in-core neutron Flux Mapping System in a pressurized water reactor yields information on the neutron flux distribution in the reactor core at selected core locations by means of movable detectors. The obtained data are used to verify the reactor core design parameters. The detector cables run through guide tubes(thimbles), and typically thirty-six to fifty-eight thimbles are allocated in the reactor depending on the number of fuel assemblies. These thimbles are inserted into nuclear fuel assemblies through conduits connected from the bottom of the reactor vessel to a seal table. During the plant refueling outage period, the thimbles are withdrawn up to 4m from the seal table, the height of a nuclear fuel. In spite of their importance, however, the thimble handling work has been performed by only human operators. In addition, its efficiency is very low due to narrow working environments on the seal table, thereby resulting in the excessive radiation exposure of maintenance personnel. To solve these problems, a new thimble handling equipment for in-core flux mapping system was developed, and we confirmed its effectiveness through experiments.

  • The Korean 2nd basic plan for management of high-level radioactive waste presented a plan to manage spent nuclear fuel through dry storage facilities in NPP on-site. For the construction and operation of the facility, it is necessary to develop the monitoring system of the integrity of spent nuclear fuel before operation. NUREG-1536 recommends that the theoretical cask array, typically in the 2×10 array, should account for shadowing effect among the dry storage casks. The objective of this study was to evaluate neutron flux accounting for shadowing effect among dry storage casks. The neutron release rate was evaluated using ORIGEN based on the design basis fuel condition. And the simulation of dry storage casks and evaluation of the shadowing effect were performed using MCNP. Shadowing effect of other dry storage casks was the highest at the center of the dry storage facility of the 2×10 array compared with the outside of the cask. The shadowing effect of neutron flux on the surface among the metal casks was approximately 18% at point 1, 23% at point 2, and 43% at point 3. For the concrete casks, the shadowing effect of neutron flux on the surface was approximately 46% at point 1, 51% at point 2, and 52% at point 3. This means that correction is necessary to monitor the integrity of spent nuclear fuel in each dry storage cask through evaluation of shadowing effect. The results of this study will be used for comparative analysis of neutron measurement data from spent nuclear fuels in dry storage cask. Additionally, the neutron flux evaluation procedure used in this study could be used as the basic data of safety assessment of dry storage cask and development of safety guide.

  • One-dimensional flux theory (1DFT) is conventionally used for design of secondary clarifier of wastewater treatment plant. However, the 1DFT cannot describe turbulence, density current, shape parameters of the clarifier. In this study, we optimized the configurations of influent guide baffle and effluent baffle through the simulation using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and its verification by particle image velocity (PIV) test. The energy dissipating inlet (EDI) without influent guide baffle ($0^{\circ}$) showed the best efficiency for minimizing downward velocity under the center well of the clarifier. The lowest velocity distribution around the effluent weir region could be obtained with the McKinney baffle (EB-2). The performances of the influent and effluent baffles were clearly verified by PIV test results.

  • The advantage of the controlled permanent magnet system for magnetic levitation is the considerable improvement in levitation force to weight ratio and the reduced rating of the on-board power supply. A combined support and guidance technique with selfstable guide behaviour reduce the expense of control and power electronics. An important feature of this system is the simplified mechanical construction of track and the vehicle does not embrace the guide way. Therefore surface mounted as well as elevated tracks are possible. The magnet was designed to provide a lift force of 750kg for a 3 ton prototype vehicle with 4 magnets by KERI and built by Dae-Bo Magnetic Co., LTD. The paper also describes the assembling technology for permanent magnets, the experimental setup and test results for lift force, guidance force and flux distribution.

  • We have fabricated the superconducting $MgB_2$/carbon fiber by physical vapor deposition method. Mg (Magnesium) and B (Boron) were simultaneously deposited on the carbon fiber using the RF-sputtering and thermal evaporation, respectively. To ensure the relatively high vapor pressure of Mg at the growth region and the subsequent phase stability of $MgB_2$ at the deposition temperature, inverted funnel-like guide made of Mg-foil was employed while one side of the guide were open for the sputtered B flux. Mg vapor pressure should be controlled precisely to secure the complete reaction. The $MgB_2$/carbon fiber showed a uniformly deposited thin layer with dense and well-formed grains. The $MgB_2$/carbon fibers in this study showed $T_c$~37.5K, $J_c$ ~ $2{\times}10^4\;A/cm^2$ in the 20K, 0T.

  • Grinding temperature and thermal deformation(dimensional error) are studied theoretically and experimentally. The propose of this research is clarified loading phenomena and residual stress In order to guide nozzle's efficiency. The main results to be obtained are as follows ; 1) When grinding condition Is high efficient grinding, FEM program is developed about grinding heat and dimensional error. 2) Thermal deformation depend on temperature distribution is in good agreement with experimental results in case of little grinding energy flux but is comparatively in good agreement with in case of large (3.5$\times$10$^{6}$ J/m). 3) In terms of high efficient grinding at field(table speed 4m/min), grinding fluid (dilution 5/100) obtained a good workpiece quality and decreased a grinding temperature. 4) A surface roughness, dimensional error, residual stress and loading phenomena with guide nozzle are decreased and these results obtained a good workpiece quality.
