A mechanistic model based on wall-attached bubble coalescence, previously developed by the authors, was extended to predict a vow high critical heat flux (CHF)in highly subcooled flow boiling, especially for high mass flux and small tube diameter conditions. In order to take into account the enhanced condensation due to high subcooling and high mass velocity in small diameter tubes, a mechanistic approach was adopted to evaluate the non-equilibrium flow quality and void fraction in the subcooled water flow boiling, with preserving the structure of the previous CHF model. Comparison of the model predictions against highly subcooled water CHF data showed relatively good agreement over a wide range of parameters. The significance of the proposed CHF model lies in its generality in applying over the entire subcooled flow boiling regime including the operating conditions of fission and fusion reactors.
The micrometeorological tower flux network is the cornerstone of the global terrestrial vegetation monitoring. The eddy covariance technique used for tower fluxes is derived from the conservation of mass and is most applicable for steady-state conditions over flat, extended, and uniform vegetation. This technique allows us to obtain surface fluxes of energy budget components, greenhouse and trace gases, and other pollutants. The quality-controlled flux data are invaluable to validate various models with temporal scales ranging from minutes to years and spatial scales ranging from a few meters to hundreds of kilometers. In this paper, we review the theoretical background of this important eddy covariance technique, examine the measurement criteria and corrections, and finally suggest some measurement strategies that may facilitate coordinated flux measurements among different disciplines and provide a strong infrastructure for the global flux network.
We performed comprehensive quality control for eddy-covariance measurements from 3 farmland sites and 1 industrial site adjacent to Nakdong river. The quality control program is based on Foken and Wichura (1996) and Vicker and Mahrt (1997) and we added criteria for trend and standard deviation for scalar variables and modified criteria for non-stationarity condition of Foken and Wichura (1996) to consider random error of fluxes. The classification of data quality is designed for the raw data and the processed flux data, separately. Use of added criteria efficiently reduces the number of outlier for water vapor and $CO_2$ fluxes and use of modified criteria for non-stationarity reduces the number of outlier for scalar fluxes and increases the number of data with accepted quality for further work. Energy balance ratio is higher in farmlands than industrial site, which is due to neglect of heat storage term in industrial site. Among farmland sites, C4 site shows higher energy balance ratio than other sites. This is due to more homogeneous surface of C4 site than other farmland sites. However, energy balance ratio is very low or even negative at night. Mismatch between the flux footprint and the other energy component footprint over the heterogeneous surface is main cause for energy imbalance at night. Other possible causes are also discussed.
This paper performed experimental research in order to measure boiling heat transfer coefficient of water in microchannel with hydraulic diameter of $500{\mu}m$. Tests were conducted within the ranges of heat fluxes from 100 to 400 kW/$m^2$, vapor qualities from 0 to 0.2, and mass fluxes of 200, 400, and 600 kg/$m^2s$. From the experimental results, it was found that flow boiling heat transfer coefficient is not dependent on mass flux or vapor quality, but instead on heat flux to a certain degree. The measured data of heat transfer are compared to a few available correlations proposed for mini-channels. Among them, Sun and Mishima's correlation is found to predict the present data well, within the mean absolute error of 17.84%.
We have investigated the seasonal characteristics of surface turbulent fluxes observed at Ieodo Ocean Research Station from 2005 to 2006. Both 10Hz and 30 minutes flux data are quality controled, and tilt correction is performed in 10Hz data before quality control. The turbulent fluxes of open sea shows clear seasonal variations, though diurnal variations are barely shown. The seasonal ratio of stable and unstable conditions are closely related to the temperature difference between sea surface and air. In stable and semi-stable condition, latent and sensible heat fluxes have very small values without any relationship with wind speed. Though friction velocity shows slightly increasing trend with wind speed, it has many outliers. In unstable condition, turbulent fluxes increased with wind speed. Especially, latent heat flux increased rapidly during DJF. The latent heat flux at high wind speeds is more scatter.
The evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop for refrigerant R-22 flowing in the plate and shell heat exchanger were investigated experimentally in this study. Two vertical counterflow channels were farmed in the exchanger by three plates of commercial geometry with a corrugated trapezoid shape of a chevron angel of 45 ° Upflow boiling of refrigerant R-22 in one channel receives heat from the hot downf1ow of water in the other channel. The effects of the mean vapor quality, mass flux, heat flux and pressure of R-22 on the evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop were explored. The quality change of R-22 between the inlet and outlet of the refrigerant channel ranges from 0.03 to 0.05. The present data showed that both the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop increase with the vapor quality. At a higher mass flux, the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop are higher for the entire range of the vapor quality Raising the imposed wall heat flux was found to slightly improve the heat transfer, while at a higher refrigerant pressure, both the heat transfer and pressure drop are slightly lower.
A large aperture scintillometer (LAS) was deployed with an optical path length of 2.1 km to estimate turbulent sensible heat flux (${\mathcal{Q}}_H$) over a highly heterogeneous urban area. Scintillation measurements were conducted during cold season in November and December 2013, and the daytime data of 14 days were used in the analysis after quality control processes. The LAS-derived ${\mathcal{Q}}_H$ show reasonable temporal variation ranging $20{\sim}160W\;m^{-2}$ in unstable atmospheric conditions, and well compare with the measured net radiation. The LAS footprint analysis suggests that ${\mathcal{Q}}_H$ can be relatively high when the newly built-up urban area has high source contribution of the turbulent flux in the study area ('northwesterly winds'). Sensitivity tests show that the LAS-derived ${\mathcal{Q}}_H$ are highly sensitive to non-dimensional similarity function for temperature structure function parameter, but relatively less sensitive to surface aerodynamic parameters and meteorological variables (temperature and wind speed). A lower Bowen ratio also has a significant influence on the flux estimation. Overall uncertainty of the estimated daytime ${\mathcal{Q}}_H$ is expected within about 20% at an upper limit for the analysis data. It is also found that stable atmospheric conditions can be poorly determined when the scintillometry technique is applied over the highly heterogeneous urban area.
The MIAB welding uses a rotating arc as its heat source and is known as an efficient method fur pipe butt welding. The arc is rotated around the weld line by the electro-magnetic force resulting from the interaction of arc current and magnetic field. The electro-magnetic force is affected by magnetic flux density, arc current, and arc length. Especially, the magnetic flux density is an important factor on arc rotation and weld quality. This paper presents a 2D finite element model for the analysis of magnetic flux density in the actual welding conditions. The magnetic flux density is mainly dependent on gap between two pipes, the position of coil from gap center, exciting current, and relative permeability. Thus, the relations between magnetic flux density and main factors were investigated through experiment and analysis. Experiments were performed for the steel pipes(48.1mm O.D and 2.0mm thickness). The analysis results of magnetic flux density reveal that it increases with increasing exciting current, increasing relative permeability, decreasing distance from gap center to coil, and decreasing gap size. It is considered that the results of this study can be used as important data on the design of coil system and MIAB welding system.
This study reports pressure drops during evaporation for R-l34a, R-407C (a mixture of 23 wt% R-32, 25 wt% R-125, and 52 wt% R-l34A) and R-410A (a mixture of 50 wt% R-32 and 50 wt% R-125) in the oblong shell and Plate heat exchanger. The effects of the mass fluxes, heat fluxes, refrigerant saturation temperatures and vapor quality of refrigerants on the measured data were explored in detail. The present data showed that pressure drops of all refrigerants increase with the vapor quality. At a higher mass flux, pressure drops are higher for the entire range of the vapor quality A rise in the heat flux doesn't show significant effects on the pressure drops. Finally, at a higher saturation temperature the pressure drops are found to be lower. The pressure drops for R-407C were approximately 20% lower than those of R-l34a. R-410A had 33% lower pressure drops than R-l34a. Correlation is also provided for the measured pressure drops in terms of the friction factor.
An experimental study on saturated flow boiling heat transfer of R113 was peformed in a vertical narrow rectangular channel with offset strip fins. Two-phase pressure gradients and boiling heat transfer coefficients in an electrically heated test section were measured in the range of quality $0{\sim}0.6$, mass flux $17{\sim}43kg/m^{2}s$, and heat flux of $500{\sim}3,000W/m^2$ Two-phase friction multipliers were determined as a function of Lockhart-Martinelli parameter. Local boiling heat transfer coefficients were analysed in terms of mass flux, heat flux and local vapor quality. Correlation for boiling heat transfer coefficients was proposed, which was in good agreement with experimental data.
