  • Recently, because people are taking a great interest in the water supply system and the related facilities are getting larger, the surge suppression is very important problem. The waterhammer occurs when the pumps are started or stoped for operation or tripped due to the power failure. As the waterhammer problems as a result of the pump power failure were very serious, these situations were carefully investigated. Accordingly, we carried out both numerical simulations and field tests to confirm the safety of Juam intake pumping station in which had the in-line pumps. In this paper, it was reviewed that the water supply system has the reliability on the pressure surge, in case the air chambers were installed at both the inlet and the oulet of the in-line pumping station. From the numerical simulations, we found that negative pressure occurred at the inlet disappeared and high pressure occurred at the outlet reduced due to the air chambers. And these results of numerical simulations verified by the field tests. The field tests carried out in case of normal start, normal stop, one and two of pumps emergency stop. By results of simulations and field tests, we are sure that Juam intake pumping station in which have the air chambers is safe for the waterhammer. In addition, we suggested the operation methods of facilities for safe maintenance of the pumping station.

  • A reduced NaCl intake for the general population of the world has been recommended to reduce the overall blood pressure level and hence to reduce the overall incidence of cardiovascular disease. A high NaCl diet convincingly contributes to elevated arterial pressure in humans and animal models of hypertension. Among individuals there is considerable variability of blood pressure responsiveness to NaCl intake. In normotensive as well as hypertensive subjects, blood pressure can be judged to be salt sensitivity (SS) when observed to vary directly and substantially with the net intake of NaCl. The prevalence of SS in normotensive adults in the U.S. ranges from 15% to 42% and in hypertensive adults from 28% to 74%. SS is a risk factor for hypertension and may be an important marker in the identification of children for hypertension prevention programs. High NaCl intakes produce expansion of the extracellular fluid volume and thus increase blood pressure. Nonchloride salts of sodium does not expand the extracellular fluid volume and does not alter blood pressure. Blood pressure response to NaCl may be modified by other components of the diet. Low dietary intakes of potassium or calcium augment NaCl-induced increases of blood pressure. Conversely, high dietary intakes of potassium or calcium attenuate NaCl-induced hypertension. A greater intakes of potassium or calcium may prevent or delay the occurrence of hypertension. SS occurs when dietary potassium is even marginally deficient but is dose-dependently suppressed when dietary potassium is increased within its normal range. Orally administered KHCO$_3$, abundant in fruits and vegetates, but not KCl has a calcium-retaining effect which may contributed to its reversal of pressor effect of dietary NaCl. Since nutrients other than NaCl also affect blood pressure levels, a reduced NaCl intake should be only one component of a nutritional strategy to lower blood pressure.

  • Sodium chloride is present in our body fluids, and the blood contains approximately 0.9 wt% salt, which plays an important role in maintaining the osmotic pressure. However, the amount of salt intake has consistently increased, and an excessive intake can be the cause of high blood pressure, etc. In this study, it was investigated in vivo and in vitro whether biocompatible ionic polymers with K or Ca ions can be replaced by Na ions through an ion exchange process to be excreted. Among the polymers, Ca-polystyrene sulfonate, K-polystyrene sulfonate, Ca-carrageenan, and Ca-tamarind had an excellent Na exchange ability in the body temperature, simulated gastric fluid and also simulated intestinal fluid. The mechanism of Na removal by absorption and excretion without changing food taste in the mouth through the insolubility properties of these polymers is expected to be a solution for the current problems related with excess sodium intake.

  • In the present study, effective hydrodynamic pressure modeling methods for three-dimensional earthquake safety analysis of a dam intake tower structure are investigated. Time history analysis results using the Westergaard added mass and Chopra added mass methods are compared with the one by the CASI (Coupled Acoustic Structural Interaction) method, which is accepted as giving almost exact solutions, to evaluate the difference in displacement response, stress and dynamic eccentricity. The 3D time history analysis of a realistic intake tower, which has the standard geometry widely used in Korea, shows that the Chopra added mass method gives similar results in displacement and stress and less conservative results in dynamic eccentricity to CASI ones, while the Westergaard added mass yields much more conservative results in all measures. This study suggests to use the CASI method directly for three-dimensional earthquake safety analysis of a dam intake tower, if computationally possible.

  • An optimal shape design approach is presented for a subsonic S-shaped intake using aerodynamic sensitivity analysis. Two-equation turbulence model is employed to capture strong counter vortices in the S-shaped duct more precisely. Sensitivity analysis is performed for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations coupled with two-equation turbulence models using a discrete adjoint method For code validation, the result of the flow solver is compared with experiment data and other computational results of bench marking test. To study the influence oj turbulence models and grid refinement on the duct flow analysis, the results from several turbulence models are compared with one another and the minimum number of grid points, which can yield an accurate solution is investigated The adjoint variable code is validated by comparing the complex step derivative results. To realize a sufficient and flexible design space, NURBS equations are introduced as a geometric representation and a new grid modification technique, Least Square NURBS Grid Approximation is applied With the verified flow solver, the sensitivity analysis code and the geometric modification technique, the optimization of S-shaped intake is carried out and the enhancement of overall intake performance is achieved The designed S-shaped duct is tested in several off-design conditions to confirm the robustness of the current design approach. As a result, the capability and the efficiency of the present design tools are successfully demonstrated in three-dimensional highly turbulent internal flow design and off-design conditions.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the effect of dietary calcium, casein and suet on intestinal absorption of cadmium in mice. It was performed for 30 days, from April 11, to May 10, 1988. Ninety mice were devided into 4 experimental groups and control group with 6 mice each dietary group, and measured survival ratio, body weight and weight ratio of organ to body. The contents of cadmium in liver, kidney, spleen, muscle and skin with hair, and feces were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer after sacrifice by anesthesia. The ratio of survival after 30 day breeding was $100\%$ in control group, but $66.7\%$ in group IV(basal diet + Cd + Ca) with $100{\mu}g$ one dose and with 50ppm cadmium containing fluid free-intake, and group V (basal diet + Cd + suet) with free-intake of 50ppm containing cadmium fluid. The ratio of body weight gains in cases of single dose $100{\mu}g$ of cadmium was highest as $42.3\%$ in group IV and lowest as $26.0\%$ in group V, in cases of free-intake of 50ppm containing cadmium fluid was highest as $24.0\%$ in group IV and lowest as $11.6\%$ in group II (basal diet + Cd). The body weight, in the case of single dose of $100{\mu}g$ of cadmium showed no increase untill 5th day from acute poisoning. While in case of free-intake of 50ppm containing cadmium, it showed very slight increase through all breeding period. The weight ratio of organ to body were lowest in liver of group II in both occasions. The most of cadmium administered was excreated in feces within 2 days after single dose $100{\mu}g$ cadmium. The contents of cadmium in all tissues were significantly high in each group comparing to control group as liver, kidney, spleen and muscle of group II which showed the highest level in both occasions of $100{\mu}g$ one dose and free-intake of 50ppm containing cadmium fluid, and higher in group II of the occasion with $100{\mu}g$ single dose, and in group V of the occasion of 50ppm containing cadmium fluid free-inatke for skin with hair. And the content of cadmium in tissues is generally higher in the occasion of 50ppm containing cadmium free-intake than $100{\mu}g$ single dose. From the above results I conclude that the addition of casein, calcium and suet in cadmium containing diet is effective to inhibtion of intestinal absorption of cadmium by particularly, calcium.

  • Swirl and tumble flows in an engine in-cylinder have been simulated by using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code, and the results are validated in comparison with experimental data. The large eddy simulation based on the Smagorinsky model and the fractional step method is adopted to describe the turbulence of in-cylinder flows and to save computing time, respectively. The main purpose of this study is connected with the effect of various conditions of intake flows on formation and development of in-cylinder tumble and swirl motions. The engine speeds considered are 1000 rpm and 3000 rpm for intake flows with inclination angles between $-10^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ}$ at deflection angles of $0^{\circ}$, $22.5^{\circ}$, and $30^{\circ}$. The results are discussed by visualizing flow fields and by evaluating parameters in relation to vortex intensity such as swirl and tumble ratios.

  • n general, the function of intake structure, whether it be a open channel, a fully wetted tunnel, a sump or a tank, is to supply an evenly distributed flow to a pump station. An even distribution of flow, characterized by strong local flow, can result in formation of surface or submerged vortices, and with certain low values of submergence, may introduce air into pump, causing a reduction of capacity and efficiency, an increase in vibration and additional noise. Uneven flow distribution can also increase or decrease the power consumption with a change in total developed head. To avoid these sump problems pump station designers are considered intake structure dimensions, such as approaching upstream, baffle size, sump width, width of pump cell and so on. From this background, flow characteristics of intake within sump are investigated numerically to obtain the optimal sump design data. The sump model is designed in accordance with HI code.

  • The closed cycle diesel engine is used in a closed circuit system which has no air breathing. The working fluid as intake mixture are consisted of oxygen, argon and recirculated exhaust gas in order to obtain underwater or underground power sources. In the present study, the high pressure diesel engine which can be operated by the closed cycle system with high intake pressure for increasing the net power rate is designed. It has been carried out to investigate the combustion characteristics of high pressure diesel engine according to the power rate. The maximum cylinder pressure and heat release rate were investigated. Also, major experimental data such as specific fuel consumption rate, oxygen concentrations, fuel conversion efficiency, polytropic exponent, and IMEP were compared with low pressure diesel engine experimental data.

  • The cross-flow fan which is used for air-conditioner indoor units were studied experimentally. The recent trend shows that the room air-conditioners need to be good-looking. According to the visual design concepts the intake regions of the fan can vary, which leads to the loss of the performance and the increase of the noise of the fan. In order to optimize the performance of the fan and minimize the aerodynamic noise for the system, the performance characteristics and the noise of the cross-flow fan have been investigated at the various conditions of the intake region of the unit.
