  • Flow meters in partly filled pipes are set up and run in Korea nowadays, but there are no standard calibration procedures for the flow meters in accordance with ' ISO/IEC 17025. The standard calibration procedure based on the standard calibration procedures for flow meter in closed conduits and the technical notes of flow meter's makers ' is developed. The measurement uncertainty of the calibration for the flow meter in partly filled pipes is evaluated.

  • The program using $C/C^{++}$ which could calculate 3-D velocities from data of the flowfield obtained by a slant hot-wire has been developed. The characteristic of the exit flowfield of a circular nozzle with a curved surface was investigated. From the result, the inward-flow was verified at adjacent layers near the boundary of the exit flowfield of a circular nozzle in Id and outward-flow was sensed gradually from down-flow of Id. Similarity of the nondimensional velocity profile properlly could be obtained except near Id and the virtual origin reasonably could be obtained.

  • The present work is concerned with heat and mass transfer of an electrically conducting second grade MHD fluid past a semi-infinite stretching sheet with convective surface heat flux. The analysis accounts for thermophoresis and thermal radiation. A similarity transformations is used to reduce the governing equations into a dimensionless form. The local similarity equations are derived and solved using Nachtsheim-Swigert shooting iteration technique together with Runge-Kutta sixth order integration scheme. Results for various flow characteristics are presented through graphs and tables delineating the effect of various parameters characterizing the flow. Our analysis explores that the rate of heat transfer enhances with increasing the values of the surface convection parameter. Also the fluid velocity and temperature in the boundary layer region rise significantly for increasing the values of thermal radiation parameter.

  • Needle valves are instrumentation devices with quick-opening inherent flow characteristics, used in pipelines requiring rapid flow supply immediately upon opening the flow path. For needle valves applied in liquefied hydrogen plants operating in cryogenic environments, it is necessary from the initial design stage to have various inherent flow characteristics in addition to quick-opening, depending on the intended usage. In this study, the inherent flow characteristics of a 1/2'' liquid hydrogen needle valve were evaluated through computational fluid dynamics analysis. Disk shapes exhibiting various inherent flow characteristics were proposed by deriving the flow coefficient (Cv) according to changes in disk shapes. Among the disk shapes that directly affect the Cv, the disk length and slope angle were selected, and case studies were conducted with nine parameter combinations. From the results of the normalized Cv regarding to opening rates, disk lengths and slope angles exhibiting quick-opening, equal-percentage, and linear inherent flow characteristics were determined.

  • In this paper, we propose an industrial fluid monitoring system which performs the flow control function and monitors fluid pressure transmitted from MFC(Mass Flow Controller) unit. This system consists of MFC unit, channel device, and monitoring management software. MFC unit transmits the measured data of the fluid pressure to the channel device which would provide the input/output interface between management software, monitoring and MFC unit. The monitoring and management software control and analyze by monitoring real time measurements of fluid pressure from each channel of MFC unit. This software can process 20 channels and 0.1 monitoring cycle which gives 200 data measurement per second (i.e., 720,000 data/hour). At this time, the storage space increases in proportion to the rise of input data. This growth of data and storage space makes loss of data access efficiency. Therefore, it demands the implementation by sensing scheme of change scope and data, which can effectively manage the data.

  • Heat exchangers are commonly used in practice in a wide range of application, from heat and air-conditioning system in a household, to chemical processing and power production in large plant. An Experimental study was conducted to investigated the fluid flow and heat transfer around four circular cylinders of in-line in a cross flow of air. The local and average heat transfer characteristics for tube banks are investigated in the present study. Heat transfer in a heat exchanger usually involves convection in each fluid and conduction through the wall separating the two fluid. The in-line pitch ratio was in the range $1.5{\leq}L/d{\leq}4.0$, where L is the center distance and d the cylinder diameter, and in the Reynolds number $8,000{\leq}Re{\leq}50,000$. The local and mean Nusselt numbers were estimated. Subsequently, the heat transfer characteristics of four circular cylinders are found to exhibit a strong dependency upon the separation point of their upstream cylinders.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the fluid flow resistance in the rectangular channel with two inclined wire screen baffles. Two different types of wire screens; dutch weave and plain weave, were used as baffle devices in this experiment. Three kinds of baffles with different mesh specifications were made up of dutch type and four different kinds of baffles were made up of plain weave type. The stainless steel wire screen baffles were mounted on the bottom wall with varied angle inclination. Reynolds numbers were varied from 23,000 to 57,000. Results show that the mesh number of baffles plays an important role on friction factor behaviour. It is found that the baffle with the most number of meshes (type SA) has the highest fluid flow resistance.

  • This paper presents the results of the application of a computational fluid dynamics algorithm for the simulation of plasma flows of arc-heated jet. The underlying physical model is based on the axisymmetric form of the conservation equations that are coupled with an arc model including Ohm heating, electromagnetic forces. The arc model given as a source term in fluid dynamic equations is determined by a solution of electric potential field governed by an elliptic partial differential equation. The governing equation of electric field is loosely coupled with fluid dynamic equations by an electric conductivity that is a function of state variables. However, the electric fields and flow fields cannot be solved In fully coupled manner, but should be solved iteratively due to the different characteristics of governing equations. With this solution approach, several applications of arc flow analysis will be presented including Arc Thruster and Circuit Breaker.

  • A semi-Lagrangian finite element scheme with objective time stepping algorithm for solving viscoelastic flow problem is presented. The convection terms in the momentum and constitutive equations are treated using a quasi-monotone semi-Lagrangian scheme, in which characteristic feet on a regular grid are traced backwards over a single time-step. Concerned with the generalized midpoint rule type of algorithms formulated to exactly preserve objectivity, we use the geometric transformation such as pull-back, push-forward operation. The method is applied to the 4:1 planar contraction problem for an Oldroyd B fluid for both creeping and inertial flow conditions.

  • A numerical technique for simulating incompressible viscous flow with free surface is presented. The flow field is obtained by penalty finite element formulation. In this work, a modified volume of fluid (VOF) method which is compatible with 4-node element is proposed to track the moving free surface. This scheme can be applied to irregular mesh system, and can be easily extended to three dimensional geometries. Numerical analyses were done for two benchmark examples, namely the broken dam problem and the solitary wave propagation problem. The numerical results were in close agreement with the existing data. Illustrative examples were studied to show the effectiveness of the proposed numerical scheme.
