  • It has been argued that the use of plastics can cause problems during design and manufacture owing to their low strength, relatively poor thermal conductivity and large thermal expansion. However, the advantages of plastics e.g., corrosion resistance, low cost, curtailment of weight, design flexibility etc., can compensate abundantly for the disadvantages. This study analyzes and compares the heat transfer performance characteristics of automotive compact oil cooler composed of plastic tube bundle with conventional metal oil cooler on the same core area basis as diameter, tube thickness, number of tube or tube arrangement varies. The performance analyses are accomplished by use of computational fluid dynamics program Fluent 6.2, which is verified and compared with the results of performance tests. The result of analyses is coincided with that of experiments. Flow pattern at air side according to tube arrangement is dominant factor which affects heat dissipation in case of similar total heat transfer surface area.

  • A series of computational analyses was performed to predict the cooling process by the cooling channel of preburners used for kerosene-liquid oxygen staged combustion cycle rocket engines. As an oxygen-rich combustion occurs in the kerosene fueled preburner, it is of great importance to control the wall temperature so that it does not exceed the critical temperature. However, since the heat transfer is proportional to the speed of fluid running inside the channel, the high heat transfer leads to a trade-off of pressure loss. For this reason, it is necessary to establish a certain criteria between the pressure loss and the heat transfer or the wall surface temperature. The design factors of the cooling channel were determined by the computational research, and a test model was manufactured. The test model was used for the hot fire tests to prove the function of the cooling mechanism, among other purposes.

  • This study presents a combined experimental and numerical effort to investigate experimentally and numerically the Bragg reflection of sinusoidal waves due to trapezoidal submerged porous breakwaters. Numerical predictions of the study are verified by comparing to laboratory measurements. In the numerical model, the flow in porous structures is described by the spatially averaged Navier-Stokes equations and the volume of fluid method is employed to track the free surface displacements. Numerical solutions are agree well with laboratory measurements. The reflection coefficients of porous structures are smaller than those of non-porous structures and become stronger in proportion to the increase of number of submerged breakwaters.

  • Ice-plugging of tube in nuclear power plant has been widely used for the purpose of preventing flow of the tube temporarily like a valve. Most common plugging method employs Liquid Nitrogen Gas of $-196^{\circ}C$. According to the change of tube materials and its dimension, the thermal stress caused from the application of the frozen gas can be varied. In this research, a series of experiments have been carried out to inspect the effect of tube geometry on thermal stresses induced due to ice-plugging. Two typical dimension of stainless and mild steels of 3 and 6 inch diameters were used for the experiments. Each critical spots were checked using strain rosette gages. Another inspection was made on the pressure and temperature of the fluid. It is shown that significant thermal stress level which can cause plastic deformation of failure has not been noticed in this series of experiments.

  • In this study, the characteristics of water treatment mixer with various propeller profiles are numerically invesitgated. The computation was conducted by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured tetrahedral elements with k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. It was found that the spreading angle and swirl magnitude of the jet are important factors for the mixer efficiency, since they clearly characterize the propeller and the frontal surface area of the propeller but not so much affected by the skew angle if it exceeds 30 degrees. The case1 and case2 models are found to show the best propeller efficiency. The case2 with low blade angle, however, requires the lowest power input for the same discharge capacity as the case1.

  • In this paper, roll damping coefficients for a non-conventional cross section, which is herein named as 'step' model, are investigated numerically and experimentally. Experiments are extensively carried out to estimate the roll damping coefficients. Numerical estimations are also made with the help of numerical codes. For convenience, the roll damping is divided into wave-making component and viscous component. The wave-making component is determined using a potential code and the viscous component using a viscous flow code, in which the fluid domain is taken as unbounded. In order to validate the present approach, a typical cross section with bilge is considered and our results are compared with published data. The comparison shows a good agreement qualitatively. For the step model, numerical results are compared well with experimental data besides some quantitative discrepancies at a certain range of frequency. It is thought that the discrepancy might be caused by the ignorance of the free surface in viscous computations. It is found in the case of the step model that not only the viscous component but also the wave component increases considerably compared to the section with bilge.

  • Direct writing(DW) is a method of patterning materials to a substrate directly, without a mask. It can use a variety of materials and be applied to various fields. Among DW systems, the flow-based type, using a syringe pump and nozzle, is simpler than other types. Furthermore, the range of materials is exceptionally wide. In additive processes, a three dimensional structure is made of stacking layer. Each layer is made of several lines. In this regard, good surface roughness of fabricated layers is essential to three dimensional fabrication. The surface roughness of any fabricated layer tends to change with the dispensing pattern. When multiple layers fabricated by a nozzle dispensing system are stacked, control of the nozzle position from the substrate is important in order to avoid interference between the nozzle and the fabricated layer. In this study, a fluid direct writing system for three dimensional structure fabrication was developed. Experimentsto control the position of the nozzle from substrate were conducted in order to examine the characteristics of the material used in this system.

  • It has been reported that a ship sailing in shallow water possesses better straight-line stability due to the change of fluid flow around the ship. This tendency affects manoeuvring characteristics of the ship. To investigate this phenomenon, indoor free running model test(FRMT) on KVLCC2 was carried out in three water depth conditions(H/T = 1.2, 1.5 & 2.0). Turning circle tests(± 35° ) and zigzag tests(± 20° /5° and ± 20° /10° ) were conducted with newly developed indoor FRMT system, and the manoeuvring results were compared with test results from other institutes. As the water depth decreased, the yaw rate of the ship decreased, and the distances of circular trajectories at the same heading angle increased in the turning circle tests. The first overshoot angles of the zigzag tests decreased. From both tests, the time for course change increased as the water depth decreased. These manoeuvring characteristics show that KVLCC2 in shallow water becomes more stable in terms of straight-line stability.

  • This study aims at investigating the effect of the baffle height on the liquid sloshing in the three-dimensional (3D) rectangular tank. In order to simulate the 3D incompressible viscous two-phase flow in the 3D tank with partially filled liquid, the present study has adopted the volume of fluid (VOF) method based on the finite-volume method which has been well verified by comparing with the results of the relevant previous researches. The ratio of the baffle height ($h_B$) to filling level (h) has been changed in the range of $0{\leq}h_B/h{\leq}1.2$ to observe the effect on the impact loads on the side wall and free surface behavior. Generally, as baffle height increases, the impact pressure on the wall decreases and the deformation of free surface becomes weaker. However it seemed that a critical ratio of the baffle height existed to reveal the lowest impact pressure on the wall. Consequently, $h_B/h=0.8$ among $h_B/hs$ considered in the study showed the lowest impact pressure.

  • A micromixer is a component of a lab-on-a-chip or microfluidic device that mixes two or more chemicals together(convergence). The purpose of this study is to assess the performance of passive micromixer of various shapes. Six shapes of micromixers were compared and three dimensional modeling was carried out to have the same hydraulic diameter. The commercial code, ANSYS Fluent, was used to simulate the internal mixing flow. A numerical analysis method is described in detail in this paper. The performance of the micromixer was compared with the mixing index and pressure drop. Consequently, the CDM-8T shape showed reasonable mixing performance and relatively low pressure drop.
