  • The natural convection and combined heat transfer induced by fire in a rectangular enclosure is numerically studied. The model for this numerical analysis is partially opened right wall. The solution procedure includes the standard k-$\varepsilon$ model for turbulent flow and the discrete ordinates method (DOM) is used for the calculation of radiative heat transfer equation. In numerical study, SIMPLE algorithm is applied for fluid flow analysis, and the investigations of combustion gas induced by fire is performed by FAST model of HAZARD I program. In this study, numerical simulation on the combined naturnal convection and radiation is carried out in a partial enclosure filled with absorbed-emitted gray media, but is not considered scattering problem. The streamlines, isothermal lines, average radiation intensity and kinetic energy are compared the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer analysis shows the stronger circulation than those of the pure convection. Three different locations of heat source are considered to observe the effect of heat source location on the heat transfer phenomena. As the results, the circulation and the heat transfer in the left region from heating block are much more influenced than those in the right region. It is also founded that the radiation effect cannot be neglected in analyzing the building in fire. And as the results of combustion gas analysis from FAST model, it is found that O2 concentration is decreased according to time. While CO and CO2 concentration are rapidly increased in the beginning(about 100sec), but slowly decreased from that time on.

  • The paper proposes alternatives for fire safety in architectural planning through heat-smoke distribution related to openings so that we decrease casualty and property loss by fire and lay a great emphasis on building high-rise apartments with consideration of fire safety in Korea. An analysis program(HFA-Heat Fluid Analysis) is built to perform simultaneously numerical analysis and experimental analysis on rooms, units and buildings. In consequence, on the first, fire prevention methods are required to be set up related to openings for design rooms since the flow of heat and smoke is influenced by the type of openings in high-rise apartments. Second, the numerical analysis showed that different planning types cause to show differences in the spreading time of heat and smoke to design the units of high-rise apartments. On the third, each unit building showed different fire behavior depending on openings by numerical analysis and small scaled experiment on heat and smoke flow.

  • The effects of Triangle Groove Strips (TGS) on Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) suppression of marine riser are numerically investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. The range of Reynolds number in simulations is 4.0 × 104 < Re < 1.2 × 105. The two-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model are used to calculate the flow around marine riser. The Newmark-β method is employed for evaluating the structure dynamics of marine riser. The effect of the height ratio (ε) of TGS on VIV suppression is evaluated. The amplitude responses, frequency responses, vortex patterns and the flow around the structures are discussed in detail. With the increase of the height ratio of TGS, the suppression effect of TGS on VIV suppression is improved firstly and then weakened. When ε=0.04, the suppression effect of TGS is the best. Compared with the VIV responses of smooth marine riser, the amplitude ratio is reduced by 38.9%, the peak of the lift coefficient is reduced by 69% and the peak of the drag coefficient is reduced by 40% when Re=6.0 × 104. With the increase of Reynolds number, the suppression effect of TGS on VIV suppression is improved firstly and then weakened. When the Reynolds number is 7.0 × 104, the amplitude ratio can be reduced by 40.1%. As to the large-amplitude vibration cases, the TGS show nice suppression effect on VIV.

  • This study carried out a series of experiments involving impact tests (Drop Weight type & Charpy type with a standard specimen and newly designed I-type specimen), hardness tests, and fracture surface observations of French-made roll shell steel (F), abnormal roll shell steel (M), reheated roll shell steel (R), and S25C steel under heat treatment conditiAn experimental study was carried out to study the solid-liquid mixture upward hydraulic transport of solid particles in vertical and inclined annuli with a rotating inner cylinder. The lift forces acting on a fluidized particle play a central role in many important applications such as the removal of drill cuttings in horizontal drill holes, sand transport in fractured reservoirs, sediment transport, the cleaning of particles from surfaces, etc. In this study a clear acrylic pipe was used to observe the movement of solid particles. Annular velocities varied from 0.4 to 1.2 m/s. The effect of the annulus inclination and drill pipe rotation on the carrying capacity of a drilling fluid, particle rising velocity, and pressure drop in a slim hole annulus were measured for fully-developed flows of water and aqueous solutions of CMC (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose) and bentonite. The rotation of the inner cylinder was efficient at carrying particles to some degree. For a higher particle volume concentration, the hydraulic pressure loss of the mixture flow increased because of the friction between the wall and solids or between solids.

  • This study aims to test the feasibility of combined use of EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) hydrodynamic model and WASP7.3 (Water Quality Analysis Program) model to improve accuracy of water quality predictions of the Yongdam Lake, Korea. The orthogonal curvilinear grid system was used for EFDC model to represent riverine shape of the study area. Relationship between volume, surface and elevation results were checked to verify if the grid system represents morphology of the lake properly. Monthly average boundary water quality conditions were estimated using the monthly monitored water quality data from Korean Ministry of Environment DB system. Monthly tributary flow rates were back-routed using dam discharge data and allocated in proportion to each basin area as direct measurements were not available. The optimum number of grid system was determined to be 372 horizontal cells and 10 vertical layers of the site for 1 year simulation of hydrodynamics and water quality out of iterative trials. Monthly observed BOD, TN, TP and Chl-a concentrations inside the lake were used for calibration of WASP7.3 model. This study shows that EFDC and WASP can be used in series successfully to improve accuracy in water quality modeling. However, it was observed that the amount of data to develop inflow water quality and flow rate boundary conditions and water quality data inside lake for calibration were not enough for accurate modeling. It is suggested that object-oriented data collection systems would be necessary to ensure accuracy of EFDC-WASP model application and thus for efficient lake water quality management strategy development.

  • The objective of this study was to derive a cementitious material for three-dimensional (3D) concrete printing that fulfills key performance functions, extrudability, buildability and bondability for 3D concrete printing. For this purpose, the rheological properties shown by different compositions of cement paste, the most fundamental component of concrete, were assessed, and the correlation between the rheological properties and key performance functions was analyzed. The results of the experiments indicated that the overall properties of a binder have a greater influence on the yield stress than the plastic viscosity. When the performance of a cementitious material for 3D printing was considered in relation with the properties of a binder, a mixture with FA or SF was thought to be more appropriate; however, a mixture containing GGBS was found to be inappropriate as it failed to meet the required function especially, buildability and extrudability. For a simple quantitative evaluation, the correlation between the rheological parameters of cementitious materials and simplified flow performance test results-time taken to reach T-150 and the number of hits required to reach T-150-in consideration of the flow of cementitious materials was compared. The result of the analysis showed a high reliability for the correlation between the rheological parameters and the time taken to reach T-150, but a low reliability for the number of hits needed for the fluid to reach T-150. In conclusion, among several performance functions, extrudability and buildability were mainly assessed based on the results obtained from various formulations from a rheological perspective, and the suitable formulations of composite materials for 3D printing was derived.

  • This paper presents research on methods for the reduction of forklifts' noise level for the increased comfort and safety of its operator. A cooling fan with a high air volume flow rate installed in the forklift acts as an important design parameter which efficiently cools the heat exchanger system, helping to transfer internal heat from the engine room to the outdoors with both transmitted and diffracted opening noises. The cooling fan contributes significantly to both the forklift's emitted sound power and the operator room's noise level, thereby necessitating research on the forklift's reduction of acoustic power level and transmission. A noise analysis for various fan models with a biomimetic design based on eagle-wing geometry was conducted. In addition to the acoustic power generation, the aerodynamic performance of the cooling blade is also strongly influenced by the design of airfoil distribution, thereby requiring optimization. The cooling fans were fabricated and installed in the forklift in order to check the efficacy of the forklift engine's cooling, and the final version of the fan was measured for its ability to lower acoustic power level and cool the engine room. This study explains the aerodynamic and acoustic features of the designed fans with the use of BEM analysis and forklift test results.

  • The aim of this study was to enhance the flow rate and noise performance of a centrifugal pump in dishwashers by designing an optimized impeller shape through numerical and experimental investigations. To evaluate the performance of the target centrifugal pump, experiment was conducted using a pump performance tester and noise experiment was carried out in a semi-anechoic chamber with microphones and a reflecting wall behind the dishwasher. Through the use of advanced computational fluid dynamics techniques, numerical simulations were performed to analyze the flow and aeroacoustics performance of our target centrifugal pump impeller. To achieve this, numerical simulations were carried out using the Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes equations and Ffowcs-Willliams and Hawkings equations as governing equations. In order to ensure the validity of numerical methods, a thorough comparison of numerical results with experimental results. After having confirmed the reliability of the current numerical method of this study, the optimization of the target centrifugal pump impeller was conducted. An improvement in flow rate was confirmed numerically, and a manufactured proto-type of the optimized model was used for experimental investigation. Furthermore, it was observed that by applying the fan law, we could effectively reduce noise levels without reducing the flow rate.

  • This study presents experimental results of heat transfer characteristics of P.C.M. during outward melting process in a vertical cylinder. The experiment was carried out in six conditions, i. e., three different inlet temperature($7^{\circ}C,\;4^{\circ}C\;and\;1^{\circ}C$) and two directions of working fluid(upward and downward). Melting P.C.M. produced a bell-shaped phase change interface. When the inlet temperature was $7^{\circ}C$, the lower region remained at $4^{\circ}C$ until the temperature of upper region reached $4^{\circ}C$. This was due to the state of maximum density of the lower region. When the direction of the working fluid in the case of $7^{\circ}C$, inlet temperature, was upward, the rate of melting and the total melting energy were higher than when it's direction was downward. But the rate of melting and the total melting energy appeared higher value as it's direction was downward when the inlet temperature is $4^{\circ}C$ and $1^{\circ}C$.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in sustainable energy. One method that has been used is an organic Rankine cycle using conventional turbine technology with a low-temperature waste heat source. A 200-kW organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system was designed for a waste heat recovery application using R245fa as the working fluid. A radial turbine running at 15,000 rpm was employed to generate more than 200 kW with an expansion ratio of nine. Because an ORC turbine uses a refrigerant as the working fluid, the ideal gas law was not employed to design the turbine. In addition, the complexity of the molecular structure of R245fa made it difficult to design the turbine. Because R245fa has an Ma value of one at a low velocity for the working fluid (about 1/3 of the speed of sound in air) at about $100^{\circ}C$, it easily reaches a supersonic flow condition with a small pressure expansion. To increase the efficiency of the turbine, a dual stage radial-type turbine with a subsonic speed was suggested. This paper will describe the design procedure and performance evaluation of the ORC turbine using R245fa.
