  • In this study, aerodynamic analyses have been conducted for 4-Bladed Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) configuration and the results are compared with experimental data. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation with LES turbulence model is solved for unsteady flow problems. In addition, the computation results by standard k-${\omega}$ and SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence models are also presented and compared. An experiment model of 4-Bladed VAWT model has been designed and constructed herein. Experimental tests for aerodynamic performance of the present VAWT model are practically conducted using the vehicle mounted testing system. Comparison results between the experiment and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses are presented in order to show the accuracy of CFD analyses using the different turbulent models.

  • The Characteristics of the drag reduction of a square prism having a detached splitter plate at the wake side was investigated by measuring of fluid force on the square prism and by visualization of the field using PIV. The experimental parameters were the width ratios(H/B=0.5~1.5) of splitters to the prism width and the gap ratios (G/B=0~2) between the prism and the splitter plate. The drag reduction rate was increased with H/B, and was increased and decreased with G/B. The maximum drag reduction rate was represented by 24.2% at H/B=1.5 and G/B=0.5. The two vortices were generated by the splitter plate at the wake region of the prism. The direction of the vortex was clockwise at the upside of the splitter plate and counterclockwise at the downside.

  • Air supply is required to the cathode of fuel cells for the provision of oxygen to produce electricity through chemical reaction with hydrogen in the cell, and supplied air should be free of impurities such as oil mist and tiny particles separated from sliding surfaces. Hence, air compressor for fuel cell air supply must be oil-less type and have no severe sliding surfaces inside. This paper introduces the concept of single-vane type rotary air compressor whose structure is particularly suitable for the fuel cell application: sliding action of the vane against the cylinder wall, which causes severe friction in the conventional vane rotary compressors, is made to be prevented by attaching the vane to the driving shaft with the compliant device between the vane and the rotor in this new design. For 2 kW fuel cell application, preliminary design has been carried out, and its performance has been estimated by using computer simulation program: for discharge pressure of 2 bar, the volumetric, adiabatic, and mechanical efficiencies are calculated to be 82.5%, 92.5%, and 96.3%, respectively.

  • Heat distortion of the non-contacting mechanical face seal is affected by friction heat between primary seal and seal sheet. The fluid or gas in mechanical face seal maintains operating gap, cooling friction heat and lubricates at the face of seal. So we designed face of seal for inclined face. inclined face of seal improves fluid or gas flow at the face of seal and it increases circumferential velocity at outer radius of the seal so temperature of the seal is decreased by low heat transfer coefficient at there. In this paper, inclined face seal are analysed numerically using finite element method for proof improve inclined face seal performance. Angle of the incline face used for FEA is from 50$^{\circ}$to 90$^{\circ}$and for explaining the effects of inclined face in seal, we get temperature, face distortion, and stress in the seal with variable operating gap and rotating speeds. Result of analysis shows that angle of the incline face is 60$^{\circ}$come to good thermal distortion characteristics.

  • Anionic radionuclides pose one of the highest risks to the long-term safety assessments of disposal repositories. Therefore, techniques to immobilize and separate such anionic radionuclides are of crucial importance from the viewpoints of safety and waste volume reduction. The main objective of this study is to design a separator with minimum pressure disturbance, based on the concept of a conventional cyclone separator. We hypothesize that the anionic radionuclides can be immobilized onto a nanomaterial-based substrate and that the particles generated in the process can flow via water. These particles are denser than water; hence, they can be trapped within the cyclone-type separator because of its design. We conducted particle tracking analysis using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for the conventional cyclone separator and studied the effects due to the morphology of the separator. The proposed sandglass-like design of the separator shows promising results (i.e., only one out of 10,000 particles escaped to the outlet from the separation zone). To validate the design, we manufactured a laboratory-scale prototype separator and tested it for iron particles; the efficiency was ca. 99%. Furthermore, using an additional magnetic effect with the separator, we could effectively separate particles with ~100% efficiency. The proposed sandglass-like separator can thus be used for effective separation and recovery of immobilized anionic radionuclides.

  • Both injection and injection molding dies have evolved into advanced technology. Product quality is also evolving day after day. Therefore, the conditions of the injection mold and the injection conditions are becoming important. In order to improve the quality of the product, the Hardware part of the mold has developed as an advanced technology, and the Software part has also developed with advanced technology. This study deals with the cooling part, which is part of the hardware. In addition to fluid cooling, which is commonly used in the industry, by using gas cooling identify the phenomena that appear on the surface of the product and the critical point strain of the product to find the optimal cooling. Electronic parts and automobile parts whose surface condition is important, the cooling process is important to such a degree that they are divided with good products and defective products according to the cooling process at the time of injection. By controlling this important cooling and reducing the injection time with additional cooling, the product quality can be increased to the highest production efficiency. In addition, high efficiency can be achieved without additional investment costs. This study was conducted to apply these various advantages in the field.

  • In the very high temperature reactor (VHTR), which is a next generation nuclear reactor system, ceramics are used as a fuel coating material and graphite is used as a core structural material. Even if a depressurization accident occurs and the reactor power goes up instantly, the temperature of the core will change only slowly. This is because the thermal capacity of the core is so high. Therefore, the VHTR system can passively remove the decay heat of the core by natural convection and radiation from the surface of the reactor pressure vessel. The objectives of this study are to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of natural convection of a one-side heated vertical channel with inserted porous materials of high porosity and also to develop the passive cooling system for the VHTR. An experiment was carried out using a one-side heated vertical rectangular channel. To obtain the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of the vertical channel with inserted porous material, we have also carried out a numerical analysis using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code. This paper describes the thermal performances of the one-side heated vertical rectangular channel with an inserted copper wire of high porosity.

  • Turbine inlet temperature is steadily increasing to achieve high specific thrust and efficiency of gas turbine engines. Turbine cooling technology is essential to increase turbine inlet temperature. For this study, a small or medium sized aircraft engine of 10,000 lbf class with the turbine inlet temperature of $1,400^{\circ}C$, the engine overall pressure ratio of 32.2, and the bypass ratio of 5 was set as the baseline model and its performance analysis was performed at the design point. The engine has the performance of 10,013 lbf thrust and the specific fuel consumption of 0.362 lbm/hr/lbf. The thrust and the specific fuel consumption of the baseline model were compared with those of similar class engines. Based on these results, the turbine design requirements were assigned. In addition, the parametric analysis of the engine, related to aerodynamic and cooling design of the high pressure turbine, was performed. Based on the baseline model engine, the influence of turbine inlet temperature, cooling flow ratio, and high pressure turbine efficiency variations on the engine performance was analyzed.

  • This paper investigates a fast, accurate and inexpensive hydraulic motor speed control system using high speed on-off solenoid valves. In order to retain the advantages of the two position valve and obtain better performance, the valves are operated by pulse width modulation(PWM) control. PWM signal is generated from a LabWIEW program in microcomputer in order to set up various duty ratio and frequency of carrier wave in PWM signal with varying system parameters. As the results of experiments, the speed control of a hydraulic motor was successfully implemented using on-off solenoid valves. In order to attenuate the pressure ripple and speed variation due to discontinuously controlled flow through the on-off valves, a resonator hose fabricated for automobile power steering system was connected between the valve and a hydraulic motor. From experimental results obtained in the hydraulic motor system with a resonator hose, it was ascertained that the resonator hose showed excellent performances in reducing pressure ripple and motor speed variation.
