A direct numerical simulation of a spatially-developing turbulent boundary layer is performed to examine the characteristics of wall pressure fluctuations after the sudden application of wall blowing or suction. The uniform blowing or suction is given by the wall-normal velocity through a spanwise slot at the wall. The response of wall pressure fluctuations to uniform blowing or suction is analyzed by computing the turbulence statistics and frequency spectra. It is found that wall pressure fluctuations are more affected by blowing than by suction. The large elongated structure of wall pressure fluctuations is observed near the maximum location of $(p_w)_{rms}$ for blowing. The convection velocities for blowing increase with increasing the streamwise location after the slot. For both blowing and suction, the small scale of wall pressure fluctuations reacts in a short downstream distance to the spanwise slot, whereas the large scale recovers slowly in a farther downstream.

Experiments of circulating water channel and two dimensional numerical simulations were performed to investigate the fluctuating characteristics of pressure in moonpool. Based on the quasi-two dimensional characteristics of pressure fluctuations disclosed by the spatial cross-correlations, the numerical results showed qualitatively good agreement with experimental data. Proper orthogonal decomposition was employed to the spatial distributions of pressure fluctuations in order to find the first and second modes of fluctuations. The first mode of pressure fluctuations showed that the fluctuating characteristics of pressure were related to the behaviors of vortical structures. The velocity fluctuations were conditionally averaged to make clear that the coherent structures were responsible for the pressure fluctuations in moonpool.
In the north and northeast of Cheonsu Bay, short-term fluctuations of surface water temperature are large owing to shallow water depth, weak current, and freshwater runoff. However, in the south of the bay, water temperature fluctuations are small owing to the inflow of offshore water by tidal currents. The water temperature in the north of the bay is higher in spring and summer than in the south of the bay, but lower in autumn and winter. During spring season, the fluctuation in the northern surface water temperature is the highest. The temperature fluctuations owing to tides are in phase with the tide in autumn and winter, and in the reverse phase with the tide in spring and summer. The dominant periods of water temperature fluctuations are half a day, daily, 15 days, and 1 month owing to the tide and 7 to 10 days, which are estimated based on atmospheric factors. Half a day and daily water temperature fluctuations are also highly correlated with air temperature and wind fluctuations. The sea area where water temperature fluctuations are highly correlated is divided into the north and south of the bay. The fluctuation phase is faster in the north of the bay than in the south or in the center.

This paper investigates the effects of outdoor pressure fluctuations on natural ventilation through an opening on a building envelope. The ventilation airflow rate depends on the magnitude and the period of the pressure fluctuations, the size of the opening relative to the space volume, and the resistance characteristics of the opening. Non-dimensional parameters have been derived, which determine indoor pressure responses due to outdoor pressure fluctuations. The flow regions are categorized into (1) synchronized region, (2) opening resistance region, and (3) transition region depending on the non-dimensional parameter derived. Pressure fluctuations and flow characteristics are investigated numerically using the 4th order Runge-Kutta method.
This paper presents an extensive analysis of unsteady wind loading data on a 18 m long and 2 m high wall in a rural environment, with the wind at a range of angles to the wall normal. The data is firstly analyzed using standard statistical techniques (moments of probability distributions, auto- and cross-correlations, auto- and cross-spectra etc.). The analysis is taken further using a variety of less conventional methods - conditional sampling, proper orthogonal decomposition and wavelet analysis. It is shown that, even though the geometry is simple, the nature of the unsteady flow is surprisingly complex. The fluctuating pressures on the front face of the wall are to a great extent caused by the turbulent fluctuations in the upstream flow, and reflect the oncoming flow structures. The results further suggest that there are distinct structures in the oncoming flow with a variety of scales, and that the second order quasi-steady approach can predict the pressure fluctuations quite well. The fluctuating pressures on the rear face are also influenced by the fluctuations in the oncoming turbulence, but also by unsteady fluctuations due to wake unsteadiness. These fluctuations have a greater temporal and spatial coherence than on the front face and the quasi-steady method over-predicts the extent of these fluctuations. Finally the results are used to check some assumptions made in the current UK wind loading code of practice.

Construction projects are high-risk activities. When undertaking such projects in an international setting, it can be complicated by foreign exchange (FOREX) fluctuation risk. This affects the construction business performance in various ways, namely its progress due to delays, which in turn create further problems, specifically cost overruns as a result of price increase in raw materials, disputes, arbitration, litigation and even, total abandonment. Thus, the effective management of FOREX fluctuations is crucial. Previous studies have focused on the need for contract safeguards, adequate insurance, careful planning and management, as well as foreign exchange futures hedging to address some of the risks triggered by FOREX fluctuations. An analysis of FOREX fluctuations in the international construction industry revealed that more often it was focused on project-specific issues. Currently, there is a relative lack of awareness on Organizational Capabilities (OC), the abilities that owned by the organization, which is essential in managing the impact of FOREX fluctuations. Where research has focused on OC, these are viewed in isolation. Therefore, this study attempts to close the gap by proposing a framework on managing the impact of FOREX fluctuations in the international construction industry, employing the OC perspective.
Low-frequency pressure fluctuations in an external-loop airlift reactor were investigated. Low-frequency pressure fluctuations could be measured by shooting videos about liquid levels in the four piezometric tubes which were installed at the lower and upper parts of the riser and downcomer using a cellular phone. The periodic characteristics of pressure fluctuations were proved by the calculation of their auto-correlation function and cross-correlation function. Even if the riser superficial gas velocity was constant, the riser and downcomer gas holdups as well as wall pressures were periodically changed due to the inertia of circulating liquid. In general, the intensity of pressure fluctuations increased with an increase in the gas velocity. When the unaerated liquid height was 0.04 m, the maximum period of pressure fluctuations was found at the specific gas velocity (0.14 ms-1). It was because the maximum inertia of circulating liquid resulted from a reduction in the increasing rate of the liquid circulation velocity and a decrease in the volume of the effectively circulating liquid with an increase in the gas velocity.

It is undisputable that crude oil and its price fluctuations are major components that affect most of the countries' economies. Recent studies have demonstrated that beside the impact that crude oil price fluctuations have on common macroeconomic indicators like gross domestic product (GDP), inflation rates, exchange rates, unemployment rate, etc., it also has a strong influence on stock markets and their performance. This relationship has been examined in a number of settings, but it is yet to be unraveled in the Omani context. Accordingly, the main purpose of this study is to examine the possible effect of the oil price fluctuations on stock price movements. The study applies Toda and Yamamoto's (1995) Granger non-causality test on the daily Oman stock index (Muscat Securities Market Index) and oil prices between the period of 2 January 2003 and 13 March 2016. The results indicated that the oil price fluctuations have a significant impact on stock index movements. However, the stock price movements do not have a significant impact on oil prices. These findings have significant implications not only for the Omani economy but also for the economy of similar countries, particularly in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The latter should carefully consider their policies and strategies regarding crude oil production and the generated income allocation as it might potentially affect the financial markets performance in these countries.
To investigate the effects of "sudden change" of wind fluctuations on vehicle running performance, which is caused by the artificial discrete simulation of wind field, a three-dimensional vehicle model is set up with multi-body dynamics theory and the vehicle dynamic responses in crosswind conditions are obtained in time domain. Based on Hilbert Huang Transform, the effects of simulation separations on time-frequency characteristics of wind field are discussed. In addition, the probability density distribution of "sudden change" of wind fluctuations is displayed, addressing the effects of simulation separation, mean wind speed and vehicle speed on the "sudden change" of wind fluctuations. The "sudden change" of vehicle dynamic responses, which is due to the discontinuity of wind fluctuations on moving vehicle, is also analyzed. With Principal Component Analysis, the comprehensive evaluation of vehicle running performance in crosswind conditions at different simulation separations of wind field is investigated. The results demonstrate that the artificial discrete simulation of wind field often causes "sudden change" in the wind fluctuations and the corresponding vehicle dynamic responses are noticeably affected. It provides a theoretical foundation for the choice of a suitable simulation separation of wind field in engineering application.
Based on historic data of monthly means of sea surface temperatures (SST) for 24 years $(1921\~1944) $ at 23 Korean and Japanese coastal stations in the East Sea (the Japan Sea), we analyzed spatio-temporal characteristics of coastal SST and SST anomalies. The means of SST at Korean coast are higher than those at Japanese coast of the same latitudes, and the annual range of SST at Korean coast are larger than those at Japanese coast. Empirical orthogonal function analysis shows that almost all $(96\%)$ of the SST fluctuations are described by simultaneous seasonal variations. The flurtuations of SST anomalies are small in the Korea Strait and large at the boundaries between the warm and told currents in the basin. The fluctuations of SST anomalies along Korean coast are correlated each other The same is true for SST anomalies along Japanese coast. However, there is only weak correlation between the SST anomalies at Korean coast and those at Japanese coast. Empirical orthogonal function analysis shows that $27\%$ of the coastal SST anomalies in the East Sea are described by simultaneous fluctuations, and $12\%$ of them are described by alternating fluctuations between Korean and Japanese coasts.
