This study presents a novel way to enhance uniformity of the gas flow inside the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), which is critically important to fuel cell performance, by using dimples. A pattern of dimple, which works as a flow distributor/collector, is designed at the inlet and outlet section of a straight channel gas separator. Size of the dimples and the gap between them were changed to optimize the flow uniformity, and any change in size or gap is considered as one design. The results show that some dimple patterns significantly enhance the uniformity compared to baseline, about 4%, while the others slightly reduce it, about 1%. Besides, the dimple pattern also affects to the pressure drop in the flow channel, however the pressure drop in all cases are negligible (less than 26.4 Pa).
Numerical simulation is made of a stably stratified salt-water solution due to lateral heating in an equilateral trapezoidal enclosure using boundary-fitted coordinate in grid generation. Results show four types of the global fluid pattern depending on the buoyancy ratio in the enclosure, i.e., unicell flow pattern for the low buoyancy ratio, layered flow pattern for the increasing buoyancy ratio, layered flow pattern with stagnant zone for the relatively high buoyancy ratio and stagnant flow pattern for the much higher buoyancy ratio.

This study is focused on the channel design of bipolar plate in the electrode of hydrogen gas generator. The characteristics of hydrogen gas generation was studied in view of efficiency of hydrogen gas generation rate and a tendency of gas flow through the riv design of electrode. Since the flow rate and flow pattern of generated gas in the two phase flow system are the most crucial in determining the efficiency of hydrogen gas generator, we adopted the commercial analytical program of COMSOL MultiphysicsTM to calculate the theoretical flow rate of hydrogen gas from the outlet of gas generator and flow pattern of two phase fluid in the electrode. In this study, liquid electrolyte flows into the bipolar plate and decomposed into gas phase, two phase flow simulation is applied to measure the efficiency of hydrogen gas generation.

Twin-skeg type stern shapes are recently adopted for very large commercial ships. However it is difficult to apply a CFD system to a hull form having twin-skeg, since grid topology around a twin-skeg type stern is more complicated than that of a conventional single-screw ship, or of an open-shaft type twin-screw ship with center-skeg. In the present study a surface mesh generator and a multi-block field grid generation program have been developed for twin-skeg type stern. Furthermore, multi-block flow solvers are utilized for potential and viscous flow analysis around a twin-skeg type stern The present computational system is applied to a 15,000TEU container ship with twin-skeg to prove the applicability. Wave profiles and wake distribution are calculated using the developed flow analysis tools and the results are compared with towing tank measurements.

This paper is a study on the optimal microdroplet generation conditions in indirect charging electrostatic spraying. Unlike the direct charging method, which applies power to the nozzle, the indirect charging method applies power to the discharge electrode between the nozzle and the collection electrode. Therefore, an electrically simplified system can be obtained by minimizing the insulation part a stable spray pattern can be obtained with a wide spray angle, and a stable spray pattern can be obtained with a wide spray angle. To conduct the study, an indirect charging type electrostatic spray visualization system was constructed and the static characteristics of the microdroplets were analyzed through image processing of the spray shape of the microdroplets. The total number of microdroplets and the number of microdroplets per power consumption are confirmed according to the changes in the distance between the discharge electrode and the collection electrode, the flow rate, and the applied voltage, which affect the generation of microdroplets, and using this, the optimal generation conditions are derived and the corresponding microdroplet size distribution was analyzed. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the optimal generation condition was at a flow rate of 15 to 20 mL/min and a voltage of -22.5 to -25 kV in terms of the number of microdroplets, and at a flow rate of 15 to 20 mL/min and a voltage of -20 kV in terms of energy consumption efficiency.
The tone generation mechanism and aeroacoustic characteristics have been investigated for flow over open cavities using direct acoustic numerical simulations. Physically the tone generation mechanism of open cavity is more complicated when flow instabilities are excited by the correlation effects of flow parameters. From non-dimensional parameter studies in very low Mach number range, it is shown that characteristics of cavity resonance inherently involve typical acoustic pattern at each discrete tone frequency, and especially in laminar flow the fundamental tone frequency is determined within flow instability criterion of laminar shear layer as well as cavity geometry, length to depth ratio.
The thermal behavior of Flow Pattern Defect (FPD) and Large Pit (LP) in Czochralski Silicon crystal was investigated by applying high temperature annealing ($\geq$$1100^{\circ}C$) and non-agitated Secco etching. For evaluation of the effect of LP upon device performance/yield, commercial DRAM and ASIC devices were fabricated. The results indicated that high temperature annealing generates LPs whereas it decreases FPD density drastically. However, the origins of FPD and LP seemed to be quite different by not showing any correspondence to their density and the location of LP generation and FPD extinction. By not showing any difference between the performance/yield of devices whose design rule is larger than 0.35 $\mu\textrm{m}$, LP seemed not to have detrimental effects on the performance/yield.
The effects of internal manifold designs the reactant feed-stream in Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) is studied to figure out mass flow-distribution patterns over an entire fuel cell stack domain. Reactants flows are modeled either laminar or turbulent depending on regions and the open channels in the bipolar plates are simulated by porous media where permeability should be pre-determined for computational analysis. In this work, numerical models for reactant feed-stream in the PEFC manifolds are classified into two major flow patterns: Z-shape and U-shape. Several types of manifold geometries are analyzed to find the optimal manifold configurations. The effect of heat generation in PEFC on the flow distribution is also investigated applying a simplified heat transfer model in the stack level (i.e. multi-cell electrochemical power-generation unit). This modeling technique is well suited for many large scale problems and this scheme can be used not only to account for the manifold flow pattern but also to obtain information on the optimal design and operation of a PEMC system.

The two-phase flow patterns for both non-loop and loop type oscillating capillary tube heat pipes (OCHPs) were presented in this study. The detailed flow patterns were recorded by a high-speed digital camera for each experimental condition to understand exactly the operation mechanism of the OCHP. The design and operation conditions of the OCHP such as turn number, working fluid, and heat flux were varied. The experimental results showed that the representative flow pattern in the evaporating section of the OCHP was the oscillation of liquid slugs and vapor plugs based on the generation and growth of bubbles by nucleate boiling. As the oscillation of liquid slugs and vapor plugs was very speedy, the flow pattern changed from the capillary slug flow to a pseudo slug flow near the annular flow. The flow of short vapor-liquid slug-train units was the flow pattern in the adiabatic section. In the condensing section, it was the oscillation of liquid slugs and vapor plugs and the circulation of working fluid. The oscillation flow in the loop type OCHP was more active than that in the non-loop type OCHP due to the circulation of working fluid in the OCHP. When the turn number of the OCHP was increased, the oscillation and circulation of working fluid was more active as well as forming the oscillation wave of long liquid slugs and vapor plugs in the OCHP. The oscillation flow of R-142b as the working fluid was more active than that of ethanol and the high efficiency of the heat transfer performance of R -142b was achieved.
