  • Flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) phenomenon of low alloy carbon steels in nuclear power plant has been known as one of major degradation mechanisms. It has a potential to cause nuclear pipe rupture accident which may directly impact on the plant reliability and safety. Recently, the equipotential switching direct current potential drop (ES-DCPD) method has been developed, by the present authors, as a method to monitor wall loss in a piping. This method can rapidly monitor the thinning of piping, utilizing either the wide range monitoring (WiRM) or the narrow range monitoring (NaRM) technique. WiRM is a method to monitor wide range of straight piping, whereas NaRM focuses significantly on a narrow range such as an elbow. WiRM and NaRM can improve the reliability of the current FAC screening method that is based on computer modeling on fluid flow conditions. In this paper, the measurements by ES-DCPD are performed with signal sensitivity analyses in the laboratory environment for extended period and showed the viability of ES-DCPD for real plant applications.

  • Energy consumption in buildings is close to 40% of the total national energy consumption in developed countries such as US and Japan, and Korea accounts for 24% of total energy consumption. In buildings, HVAC can't freely control the cooling flow rate according to the required calorie, so energy is not used efficiently. Therefore, by using the energy saving valve, the flow rate can be controlled by the required amount of heat and the energy can be saved. In this paper, we define basic conditions and develop control and monitoring boards for building energy saving valves based on PIC processor with low power and high cost-effectiveness. The designed board displays and transmits in real time information about two temperature values, flow values and calculated calories for temperature difference measurement. The developed board will be useful for real - time monitoring of the state of the valve in the future and development of the valve for the offshore.

  • In most of the previous studies, invasive and discrete techniques have been used to monitor the healing process of the gingival graft. However, Laser Doppler Flowmetry(LDF, floLAB(R), Moor Instruments Ltd., England) is a non-invasive technique for measurement of blood flow in the tissue and also allows continuous monitoring. Thus, we tested the usefulness of LDF in monitoring the healing process of free gingival graft at gingival recession. Eleven gingival graft site of 7 patients, including 5 males and 2 females, aged between 21 and 41 years (mean age 28.5) were monitored for the blood flow. The blood flow in gingival graft at coronal site, central site, apical site, mesial site and distal site was measured using LDF. Blood flow was measured at 1- week, 2- week, 3- week and 4- week after gingival graft surgery from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Time-course of the healing process was evaluated by statistical analysis using repeated ANOVA and Duncan test. The results were as follows : (1) Blood flow stayed increased for 2 weeks, and then, it was a tendency to decrease. (2) The blood flow at distal site had always higher than mesial site during the measuring periods. (3) The blood flow was high orderly after 1 week ; most coronal site, most apical site, central site. But that was high orderly after 2 week, 3 week, 4 week ; most coronal site, central site, most apical site. In conclusion, LDF was a useful and clinically adaptable method to monitor wound healing process. Our study suggested that it was important to protect surgical site to promote initial wound healing.

  • The horizontal heat-pulse flowmeter was used to measure grounwater flow in volcanic rocks at sites in eastern part of Jeju Island, Korea. Three boreholes, Handong-1, Jongdal-1, and Susan-1, which are located at close distance from the coastline, were selected from the sea water intrusion monitoring wells. To evaluate the direction and velocity of the groundwater flow, 6 to 8 measuring points for each borehole were chosen. There are two major flow directions at Handong-1, which are toward north-east and south-east directions and velocity ranges from $2.2{\sim}3.0cm/hr\;and\;0.6{\sim}1.0cm/hr$, respectively. For Jongdal-1, two major flow directions were detected that are east and north-west and velocity ranges from $1.2{\sim}2.0cm/hr$. For Susan-1, major flow is toward east direction and the ,velocity ranges from $2.2{\sim}2.7cm/hr$ at depth $60{\sim}70m$,\;and\;0.8{\sim}0.9cm/hr$ at depth $70{\sim}80m$. In order to evaluate the tidal effect on groundwater flow, direction and velocity were measured at specific depth with time, At depth 57m of Susan-1, the velocity increased during the tidal variation, The flow direction and velocity varies with different depths, and they are also affected by tidal fluctuation. Thereafter, care must be taken when flow direction and velociy is estimated indirectly by using hydraulic head at monitoring wells.

  • The information of flow regimes continues to be norm in water resource and watershed management, in that stream flow regime is a crucial factor influencing water quality, geomorphology, and the community structure of stream biota. The objectives of this study were to estimate Korean stream flows from landscape variables, classify stream flow gages using hydraulic characteristics, and then apply these methods to ungaged biological monitoring sites for effective ecological assessment. Here I used a linear modeling approach (MLR, PCA, and PCR) to describe and predict seasonal flow statistics from landscape variables. MLR models were successfully built for a range of exceedance discharges and time frames (annual, January, May, July, and October), and these models explained a high degree of the observed variation with r squares ranging from 0.555 (Q95 in January) to 0.899 (Q05 in July). In validation testing, predicted and observed exceedance discharges were all significantly correlated (p<0.01) and for most models no significant difference was found between predicted and observed values (Paired samples T-test; p>0.05). I classified Korean stream flow regimes with respect to hydraulic and hydrologic regime into four categories: flashier and higher-powered (F-HP), flashier and lower-powered (F-LP), more stable and higher-powered (S-HP), and more stable and lower-powered (S-LP). These four categories of Korean streams were related to with the characteristics of environmental variables, such as catchment size, site slope, stream order, and land use patterns. I then applied the models at 684 ungaged biological sampling sites used in the National Aquatic Ecological Monitoring Program in order to classify them with respect to basic hydrologic characteristics and similarity to the government's array of hydrologic gauging stations. Flashier-lower powered sites appeared to be relatively over-represented and more stable-higher powered sites under-represented in the bioassessment data sets.

  • In recent academic and industrial circles of the Republic of Korea, the securement of available reactive power reserve against the line faults is at issue. Thus, simulations have been performed for the securing of effective reactive power reserve (effective Q) to prepare for the line faults and improve reactive power monitoring and control methods. That is, a research has been conducted for the fast-decoupled Newton-Raphson method. In this study, a method that distinguishes source and sink regions to carry out faster provision of information in the event of line fault has been proposed. This method can perform quantification with the formula that calculates voltage variations in the line flow. The line flow and voltage changes can be easily induced by the power flow calculation performed every second in the operation system. It is expected that the proposed method will be able to contribute to securement of power system stability by securing efficient reactive power. Also, the proposed method will be able to contribute to prepare against contingencies effectively. It is not easy to prepare quickly for the situation where voltage drops rapidly due to the exhaustion of reactive power source by observing voltage information only. This paper's simulation was performed on the large scale Korean power system in steady state.

  • Human detection is an important aspect in many video-based sensing and monitoring systems. Studies have been actively conducted for the automatic detection of humans in camera images, and various methods have been proposed. However, there are still problems in terms of performance and computational cost. In this paper, we describe a method for efficient human detection in the field of view of a camera, which may be static or moving, through multiple processing steps. A detection line is designated at the position where a human appears first in a sensing area, and only the one-dimensional gray pixel values of the line are monitored. If any noticeable change occurs in the detection line, corner detection and optical flow computation are performed in the vicinity of the detection line to confirm the change. When significant changes are observed in the corner numbers and optical flow vectors, the final determination of human presence in the monitoring area is performed using the Histograms of Oriented Gradients method and a Support Vector Machine. The proposed method requires processing only specific small areas of two consecutive gray images. Furthermore, this method enables operation not only in a static condition with a fixed camera, but also in a dynamic condition such as an operation using a camera attached to a moving vehicle.

  • This study evaluates the sensitivity of a ferrous particle sensor in response to changes in viscosity in a gearbox. Composed of various gears, the gearbox typically occurs significant ferrous wear due to gear contact. Condition monitoring is primarily implemented by measuring the number of ferrous wear particles in the lubricant. Gearboxes are critical in many systems, including wind turbines, for facilitating changes in speed and torque. Therefore, technology to monitor ferrous particles in gearboxes is essential. In this study, a simplified gearbox is numerically modeled to assess sensor sensitivity based on viscosity and sensor position. Three sensor positions are considered: one directly beneath the gear and two at locations farther from the gear. Analyses are conducted using lubricants with low viscosity and gear oil. Sensor sensitivity is defined by the number of ferrous particles adhering to the sensor, where more particles indicated higher sensitivity. The evaluation reveals that the position directly beneath the gear exhibits the highest sensitivity due to direct influence from the main flow. To achieve optimal sensitivity, sensors should be installed in the main flow path as determined by flow analysis. Evaluation of sensor sensitivity with changes in viscosity shows that a higher viscosity results in a lower sensor sensitivity. Therefore, for ease of analysis, performing an analysis under low-viscosity conditions is useful for understanding the main flow and for identifying the optimal location for proper sensor position.

  • Nuclear power utilities should establish a site-specific groundwater monitoring program for early detection of unplanned radioactive material's releases which can occur due to degradation of systems, structures and components of the nuclear power plants in order to keep the impact of the unplanned releases on the environment and the residents as low as reasonably achievable. For this end, groundwater flow on site should be evaluated based on characterization of the hydrogeology of a site of concern. This paper aims to provide data necessary for establishing groundwater monitoring program which is currently considered at Kori nuclear power plant 1 by characterizing groundwater flow system on the site based on the existing hydrogeological studies and related documents, and by modeling tritium transport. The results showed that the major groundwater flow direction was south-west and that most of groundwater entered a southern and eastern seas. Although the tritium plume also released into the sea, its rate was delayed by dewatering sump.
