This study analyzes the velocity and pressure incurred by protruding shapes installed within the inlet part of a pressurized membrane module during operation to determine the fluid flow distribution. In this paper, to find the flow distribution within a module, it investigates the velocity and pressure values at cross-sectional and outlet planes, and 9 sections classified on outlet plane using computational fluid dynamics. From the Reynolds number (Re), the fluid flow was estimated to be turbulent when the Re exceeded 4,000. In the vertical cross-sectional plane, shape 4 and 6 (round-type protrusion) showed the relatively high velocity of 0.535 m/s and 0.558 m/s, respectively, indicating a uniform flow distribution. From the velocity and pressure at the outlet, shape 4 also displayed a relatively uniform fluid velocity and pressure, indicating that fluid from the inlet rapidly and uniformly reached the outlet, however, from detailed data of velocity, pressure and flowrate obtained from 9 sections at the outlet, shape 6 revealed the low standard deviations for each section. Therefore, shape 6 was deemed to induce the ideal flow, since it maintained a uniform pressure, velocity and flowrate distribution.

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are regarded as a promising alternative to replace the existing automotive power sources. To get high performance and long-term durability for PEMFC systems, novel water management is essential. To this end, a comprehensive understanding of dynamics of the liquid water droplets within an operating PEMFC plays an important role. In this work, direct visualization of dynamic behaviors of the water droplet in the ex situ unit flow channel of a PEMFC including gas diffusion layer (GDL) is carried out as one of the fundamental studies for novel water management. Water droplet dynamics such as the movement and growth of liquid water droplets are mainly presented. Effects of GDL characteristics and inlet air flow rate on the water droplet transport and its removal from the flow channel are also discussed. The data obtained in this study can contribute to build up the fundamental operating strategy including balanced water removal capacity for automotive PEMFC systems.

Driftwood is one of serious problems in a river environment. In several countries, such as Indonesia, Japan, and Italy, the driftwood frequently appears in a river basin, and it can alter the channel bed, flow configuration by wood deposition and jam formation. Therefore, the studies related to driftwood have been actively conducted by many researchers to understand the mechanism of driftwood dynamics. In particular, wood motion by collision is one of the difficult issues in the numerical simulation because the calculation for wood collision requires significantly expensive calculation time due to small time step. Thus, this study conducted the numerical simulation in consideration of the wood motion by water flow and wood collision to understand the wood dynamics in terms of computation. We used the 2D (two-dimensional) depth-averaged velocity model, Nays2DH, which is a Eulerian model to calculate the water flow on the generalized coordinate. A Lagrangian type driftwood model, which expresses the driftwood as connected sphere shape particles, was employed to Nays2DH. In addition, the present study considered root wad effect by using larger diameter for a particle at a head of driftwood. An anisotropic bed friction was considered for the sliding motion dependent on stemwise, streamwise and motion directions. We particularly considered changeable draft at each particle and projection area by an angle between stemwise and flow directions to precisely reproduce the wood motions. The simulation results were compared with experimental results to verify the model. As a result, the simulation results showed good agreement with experimental results. Through this study, it would be expected that this model is a useful tool to predict the driftwood effect in the river flow.
In the current study, A model for the flow analysis of fresh and highly flowable concrete has been developed using a particle method, the moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method. The phenomena on the flow of concrete has been considered as a visco-plastic flow problem, and the basic governing equation of concrete particle dynamics has been based on the Navier-Stokes equation in Lagrangian form and the conservation of mass. In order to formulate a visco-plastic flow constitutive law of fresh concrete, concrete is modeled as a highly viscous material in the state of non-flow and as a visco-plastic material in the state of flow after reaching the yield stress of fresh concrete. A flow test of fresh concrete in the L-box was simulated and the predicted flow was well matched with the experimental result. The developed method was well showed the flow motion of concrete particles because it was formulated to be based on the motion of visco-plastic fluid dynamics.
The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is evaluate the application of a commercial CFD code to predict 3-D flow characteristics of wind turbine. The experimental approach, which has been main method of investigation, appears to be its limits, the cost increasing disproportionally with the size of the wind turbines, and is hence mostly limited to observing the phenomena. Hence, the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques and Wavier-Stokes solvers are considered a very serious contender. The flow solver CFX-TASCflow is employed in all computations presented in this paper. The 3-D flow separation and the wake distribution of 2 bladed Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs) are compared to Heuristic model and visualized result by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory). Simulated 3-D flow separation structure on the rotor blade is very similar to Heuristic model and the wake structure of the wind turbine is good agree with visualized results.

In this study, flow-induced vibration (FIV) analyses have been conducted for a 3D compressor blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responses of designed compressor blades. Fluid domains are modeled using the computational grid system with local grid deforming and remeshing techniques. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model are solved for unsteady flow problems of the rotating compressor model. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D compressor blade for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Detailed dynamic responses and instantaneous pressure contours on the blade surfaces considering flow-separation effects are presented to show the multi-physical phenomenon of the rotating compressor blade.

In this study, for the flow of carbon dioxide/hydrogen mixture through a tubular type Pd-Ag membrane, hydrogen partial pressure, velocity profile, and concentration profile were simulated as a function of inlet flow rate using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. The simulation results indicated that the mole fraction of carbon dioxide increased slowly in the longitudinal direction as the flow rate increased. In addition, the effects of inlet flow rate and the length of membrane on hydrogen recovery were investigated. At lower flow rate and for longer membrane, the hydrogen recovery was larger.

The supersonic flow around multi-stage rocket system is analyzed using 3-D compressible unsteady flow solver. A Chimera overset grid technique is used for the calculation of present configuration and grid around the core rocket is composed of 3 zones to represent fins in the core rocket. Flow solver is parallelized to reduce the computation time, and an efficient parallelization algorithm for Chimera grid technique is proposed. AUSMPW+ scheme is used for the spatial discretization and LU-SGS for the time integration. The flow field around multi-stage rocket was analyzed using this developed solver, and the results were compared with that of a sequential solver The speed-up ratio and the efficiency were measured in several processors. As a result, the computing speed with 12 processors was about 10 times faster than that of a sequential solver. Developed flow solver is used to predict the trajectory of booster in separation stage. From the analyses, booster collides against core rocket in free separation case. So, additional jettisoning forces and moments needed for a safe separation are examined.
In this study, the ejector design was modeled using Fluent 6.3 of FVM(Finite Volume Method) CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) techniques to resolve the flow dynamics in the ejector. A vacuum system with the ejector has been widely used because of its simple construction and easy maintenance. Ejector is the main part of the desalination system, of which designs determine the efficiency of system. The effects of the ejector was investigated geometry and the operating conditions in the hydraulic characteristics. The ejector consists mainly of a nozzle, suction chamber, mixing tube(throat), diffuser and draft tube. Liquid is supplied to the ejector nozzle, the fast liquid jet produced by the nozzle entrains and the non condensable gas was sucked into the mixing tube. In the present study, the multiphase CFD modeling was carried out to determine the hydrodynamic characteristics of seawater-air ejector. Two-dimensional geometry was considered with the quadrilateral-mashing scheme. The gas suction rate increases with increasing Motive flow circulating rate.
