  • Leaf type foil bearings have been used successfully in many aerospace applications such as air cycle machines, turbocompressors and turboexpander. These applications are characterized by light loads, constant speeds and low to moderate temperatures. But, as system on start-up or shutdown, sliding contact between the shaft and foil surfaces cause wear. So, in present study, to understand pressure-flow characteristics and deformation of foil bearing, flow/structure interaction analysis was used. and using this method, 2D and 3D calculation was peformed for shape of foil bearing to know circumferential direction flow and leakage flow characteristics of axial direction.

  • The effect of vapor flow direction on falling film heat transfer was experimentally investigated by using water. Parallel flow (both water and vapor downwards) showed higher heat exchange performance than counterflow(downward water and upward vapor). The difference became significant as the vapor flow rate was increased. It is supposed that the uprising vapor disturbs the solution film flow and heat transfer is reduced by uneven distribution or detachment of water film.

  • The refrigerant R-134a flow distributions are experimentally studied for a round header/ten flat tube test section simulating a brazed aluminum heat exchanger. Three different inlet orientations(parallel, normal, vertical) were investigated. Tests were conducted with downward flow for the mass flux from 70 to 130 $kg/m^2s$ and quality from 0.2 to 0.6. In the test section, tubes were flush-mounted with no protrusion into the header. It is shown that normal and vertical inlet yielded approximately similar flow distribution. At high mass fluxes or high qualities, however, slightly better results were obtained for normal inlet configuration. The flow distribution was worst for the parallel inlet configuration. Possible explanation is provided based on flow visualization results.

  • A computational analysis using Reynolds stress model in FLUENT is conducted to give a clear understanding of the effect of blade loading on the structure of tip leakage flow in a forward-swept axial-flow fan at design condition ($\phi$=0.25) and off-design condition ($\phi$=0.21 and 0.30). The roll-up of tip leakage flow starts near the minimum static wall pressure position, and the tip leakage vortex developes along the centerline of the pressure trough within the blade passages. Near tip region, a reverse flow induced by tip leakage vortex has a blockage effect on the through-flow. As a result, high momentum region is observed below the tip leakage vortex. As the blade loading increases, the reverse flow region is more inclined toward circumferential direction and the onset position of the rolling-up of tip leakage flow moves upstream. Because the casing boundary layer becomes thicker, and the mixing between the through-flow and the leakage jet with the different flow direction is enforced, the streamwise vorticity decays more fast with blade loading increasing. The computational results show that a distinct tip leakage vortex is observed downstream of the blade trailing edge at $\phi$=0.30, but it is not observed at $\phi$=0.21 and 0.25.

  • The humidifying supply gas is important in terms of the performance efficiency and membrane life improvement of a PEM fuel cell. A planar membrane humidifier is classified as a cross-flow and counter-flow type depending on the flow direction, and heat and mass transfer occur between the plate and the membrane. In this study, the changes in heat and mass transfer for various inlet temperatures and flow rates are compared according to the flow direction by using the sensible and latent ${\varepsilon}$-NTU method. The obtained results indicate that the counter flow shows higher heat and mass transfer performance than the cross flow at a low flow rate, and the difference in performance decreases as the flow rate increases. Furthermore, changes in the mass transfer performance decrease considerably with a nonlinear increase in the inlet temperature, and variations of the heat transfer performance are small.

  • The gun-type gas burner adopted in this study is generally composed of some slits and swirl vanes. Therefore, this paper is studied to investigate the effect of slits and swirl vanes on the turbulent flow fields in the horizontal plane of gas swirl burner with a cone type baffle plate measured by using X-probe from hot-wire anemometer system. This experiment is carried out at flow rate $450\;{\ell}/min$, which is equivalent to the combustion air flow rate necessary for heat release 15,000 kcal/hr in gas furnace, in the test section of subsonic wind tunnel. When the burner has only swirl vanes, the axial mean velocity component shows the characteristic that spreads more remarkably toward radial direction than axial one, but when it has only slits, that is developed spreading more toward axial direction than radial one. Therefore, because the biggest speed is spurted in slits and it derive main flow toward axial direction encircling rotational flow that comes out from swirl vane that is situated on the inside of slits, both slits and swirl vanes composing of cone type gas burner act role that decreases the speed near slits and increases the flow speed in the central part of a burner. Moreover, because rotational flow by swirl vanes and fast jet flow by slits increase turbulent intensities effectively coexisting, the turbulent kinetic energy is distributed with a bigger size fairly near slits than burner models which have only slit or swirl vanes within X/R<0.6410.

  • This paper is the second investigation on the evaluation methods of flow characteristics in a steady flow bench. In the previous work, several assumptions used in the steady flow bench were examined and it was concluded that the assumption of the solid rotation might cause serious problems. In this study, intake valve angle is selected as a main parameter for the assessment because the main flow direction to cylinder governed by this angle has the strongest influence on the in-cylinder flow pattern. For this purpose, four heads, which have the different angle, are prepared and the flow characteristics are estimated both by the conventional impulse swirl meter and a particle image velocimetry at 1.75 times bore position apart from the cylinder head, which is widely used plane in the steady flow measurement. The results show that both of the eccentricity and the velocity profile distort the flow characteristics when using the ISM at 1.75 plane, however, the effects of two factors act in the opposite direction. In addition, the profile's influence is much greater than that of the eccentricity.

  • We compared the heat transfer characteristics of the parallel and the counterflow flow in the concentric double tube of the Al2O3/water nanofluids using numerical methods. The high- and low-temperature fluids flow through the inner circular tube and the annular tube, respectively. The heat transfer characteristics according to the flow direction were compared by changing the volume flow rate and the volume concentration of the nanoparticles. The results showed that the heat transfer rate and overall heat transfer coefficient improved compared to those of basic fluid with increasing the volume and flow rate of nanoparticles. When the inflow rate was small, the heat transfer performance of the counterflow was about 22% better than the parallel flow. As the inflow rate was increased, the parallel flow and the counterflow had similar heat transfer rates. In addition, the effectiveness of the counterflow increased from 10% to 22% rather than the parallel flow. However, we verified that the increment in the friction factor of the counterflow is not large compared to the increment in the heat transfer rate.

  • For the optimal design of an automotive blower system, effects of the scroll cut-off starting angle, the clearance between blade tip and bellmouth, and the scroll expansion angle on the performance of sirocco fan are investigated experimentally. Best performance is achieved at fan exposure ratio $\Deltae/r_c$,/TEX> =1.0, and clearance ratio $\DeltaeC/C=0.62. Flow characteristics inside sirocco fan are also studied by using LDV. Flow patterns in the inside of fan can be classified into three regions. Velocity vector has the same direction as rotational direction of fan at 0~$120^{\circ}$, toward the fan blades at 150~$180^{\circ}$, and opposite direction at 210~$330^{\circ}$. Turbulent intensity is relatively high near the cut-off edge in the scroll housing.

  • This paper presents a mathematical decomposition coordination method to implementing the distributed optimal power flow (OPF), wherein a regional decomposition technique is adopted to parallelize the OPT. The proposed approach is based on the Alternating Direction Method (ADM), a variant of the conventional Augmented Lagrangian approach, and makes it possible the independent regional AC-OPF for each control area while the global optimum for the entire system is assured. This paper is an extension of our previous work based on the auxiliary problem principle (APP). The proposed approach in this paper is a completely new one, however, in that ADM is based on the Proximal Point Algorithm which has long been recognized as one of the attractive methods for convex programming and min-max-convex-concave programming. The proposed method was demonstrated with IEEE 50-Bus system.
