  • Many LNG ships will be constructed in Korea and the demand of safety valves is increasing. The most important performance of the developed safety relief valves for LNG ship is flow capacity. Flow capacity tests for 8 sizes of developed safety valves were conducted in the high pressure gas flow standard system in KRISS. The initial spring force adjustment was important for setting pressure of the safety valve. The procedure of data reduction and evaluation of the safety valve performance are suggested. This procedure was approved by French Bureau Veritas and Lloyd's Register.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of a 12 tons capacity circulating concurrent flow rice dryer. An actual scale dryer with the capacity of 12 tons was developed to obtain a faster drying rate of 0.8~1.2%(w.b.)/h, while maintaining a lower drying energy consumption of 5,000 kJ/kg-water and achieving a drying quality that was comparable to a conventional cross-flow rice dryer. The Test-1 was conducted at $110^{\circ}C\;-\;20\;cmm/m^2$ and the Test-2 was conducted at $120-110-100-90^{\circ}C\;-\;20\;cmm/m^2$ under the same conditions as Test-1. In Test-1, the drying rate, drying energy consumption and crack ratio were 0.98 %(w.b.)/h, 4,573 kJ/kg-water and 3.2%, respectively. In Test-2, the drying rate, drying energy consumption and crack ratio were 0.74 %(w.b.)/h, 4,790 kJ/kg-water and 4.0%, respectively. The results of these tests demonstrated that this concurrent-flow dryer reached the desired drying rate, drying energy consumption and crack ratio.

Thereafter, the data from 8 kinds of caries activity test were analysed and evaluated. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Snyder test was positive in 86.0% of total tested persons, and among those showing positive Snyder test reaction, slight caries activity was appeared in 39.1%, moderate caries activity in 23.9%, and marked caries activity in 37.0%. 2. Salivary flow rate was under the average flow amount in 53.3%. 3. Salivary buffering capacity was low in 22.4%. 5. Buffering capacity of dental plaque was high in 12.5%. 6. Oral hygiene ability was insufficient in all persons tested. 7. Oral glucose clearance time was long in 42.1%. 8. Plaque reformation rate was high in 8.4% of the 107 persons tested.

  • Energy-efficient contrarotating propeller systems have been recently reviewed as one of alternative means in marine car-carrier applications. Contrarotating rotors preclude the usage of conventional plain journal bearings due to the lack of load carrying capacity. A new multi-recess hydrostatic contrarotating journal beating test facility has been designed and installed to test the static load carrying capacity. Measurements of flow rates and orbits have been investigated by testings on a overhung-type contrarotating rotor system which is supported by a hydrostatic journal bearing. Numerical results of static equilibria were compared with test results. Various contrarotating speed combinations, and supply pressure conditions were selected. The numerical predictions of orbit centers and flow rates are generally accurate.

  • In this study, on-site performance test of an air source heat pump which has a rated capacity of 10 RT is carried out. Since indoor and outdoor air conditions can not be controlled to satisfy the standard test conditions, experiments are done with the inlet air conditions as they exist. To estimate the performance of the heat pump for other conditions, the heat pump is modeled with a small number of characteristic parameters. The values of the parameters are determined from the few measurements measured on-site during steady operation. A simulation program is developed to calculate cooling capacity and power consumption at any other arbitrary operating conditions. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experiment. This study provides a method of an on-site performance diagnosis of an air source heat pump.

  • In order to comparatively observe the salivary cariogenic factors contributing to permanent tooth caries development in each sexes of Korean, the author performed estimation of unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow rates, salivary viscosity test, and salivary buffering capacity test in 50 males and 50 females Koreans aged form the age 20 to 29. Thereafter, the data from the four kinds of caries activity test were analysed and evaluated comparatively. The obtained results were as follows. 1. Unstimulated salivary flow rate for five minutes was 2.2ml in males and 1.7ml in females but the sexual difference was not significant statistically. 2. Stimulated salivary flow rate for five minutes was 7.1ml in males and 4.8ml in females. 3. Salivary viscosity was 1.9 in males and 1.7 in females but the sexual diffrence was not significant statistically. 4. Salivary buffering capacity was 8.5 drops in males and 6.7 drops in females 5. It seems the stimulated salivary flow rate and buffering capacity to be the anti-cariogenic factors in the occurrence of permanent tooth caries in Koreans.

  • To investigate hydraulic and thermal characteristics of ice slurries in a circular tube, ice slurries were tested in a flow loop with a constant heat flux test section, for ranges of flow velocity, ice fraction and heat flux. Heat transfer coefficients and friction factors of ice slurries were calculated by measuring the outer wall temperatures of the test section and the pressure drops over the test section. Heat transfer coefficients of ice slurries were 9% higher than the heat transfer coefficients expected by Petukhov. Friction factors were about 4% lower than the friction factors expected by Petukhov. The effective thermal capacity of ice slurry with 12.8% ice fraction, was found to be about 3 times higher than the thermal capacity of water.

  • In this study, six mortar mixes were tested in order to examine the significance and limitations of hydrophilic fiber in terms of its capacity to enhance the tensile resistance of Hwangtoh mortar. Lyocell, polyamide and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers were selected for the main test parameters. The tensile capacity of mortars tested was evaluated based on the splitting tensile strength and the modulus of fracture, while their ductility was examined using the toughness indices specified in ASTM. Test results showed that the addition of lyocell and PVA fibers had little influence on the flow of the Hwangtoh mortars. To enhance the tensile capacity and toughness index of Hwangtoh mortar, it is proposed that fiber spacing above 0.0003 is required, regardless of the type of fiber.

  • The current design equations for predicting the torsional capacity of RC members underestimate the torsional strength of under-reinforced members and overestimate the torsional strength of over-reinforced members. This is because the design equations consider only the yield strength of torsional reinforcement and the cross-sectional properties of members in determining the torsional capacity. This paper presents an analytical model to predict the thickness of shear flow path in RC beams subjected to pure torsion. The analytical model assumes that torsional reinforcement resists torsional moment with a sufficient deformation capacity until concrete fails by crushing. The ACI 318 code is modified by applying analytical results from the proposed model such as the average stress of torsional reinforcement and the effective gross area enclosed by the shear flow path. Comparison of the calculated and observed torsional strengths of existing 129 test beams showed good agreement. Two design variables related to the compressive strength of concrete in the proposed model are approximated for design application. The accuracy of the ACI 318 code for the over-reinforced test beams improved somewhat with the use of the approximations for the average stresses of reinforcements and the effective gross area enclosed by the shear flow path.
