  • The effect of graphene growth parameters on the number of graphene layers were systematically studied and growth mechanism on copper substrate was proposed. Parameters that could affect the thickness of graphene growth include the pressure in the system, gas flow rate, growth pressure, growth temperature, and cooling rate. We hypothesis that the partial pressure of both the carbon sources and hydrogen gas in the growth process, which is set by the total pressure and the mole fraction of the feedstock, could be the factor that controls the thickness of the graphene. A synthetic method to produce such large area graphene films with precise thickness from mono- to few-layer would be ideal for chemists and physicists to explore the promising electronic applications of these materials. Here, large-area uniform mono-, bi-, and few-layer graphene films were successfully synthesized on copper surface in selective growth windows, with a finely tuned total pressure and $CH_4$/$H_{2gas}$ ratio. Our findings may facilitate both the large-area synthesis of well-controlled graphene features and wide range of applications of graphene.

  • Ocean wave parameters are important for safety and efficiency of operation and routing of marine traffic. In this paper, by using X-band marine radar, we try to develop an effective algorithm for collecting ocean surface information such as current velocity, wave parameters. Specifically, by exploiting iterative refinement flow instead of using fixed control schemes, an effective algorithm is designed in such a way that it can not only compute efficiently the optimized current velocity but also introduce new cost function in an optimized way. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is very effective in retrieving the wave information compared to the conventional algorithms.

  • A high-step-up DC/DC converter for renewable energy systems is proposed. The proposed structure provides high voltage gain by using a coupled inductor without the need for high duty cycles and high turn ratios. The voltage gain is increased through capacitor-charging techniques. In the proposed converter, the energy of the leakage inductors of the coupled inductor is reused. This feature reduces the stress on the switch. Therefore, a switch with low ON-state resistance can be used in the proposed converter to reduce losses and increase efficiency. The main switch is placed in series with the source. Therefore, the converter can control the energy flow from the source to the load. The operating principle is discussed in detail, and a steady state analysis of the proposed converter is conducted. The performance of the proposed converter is verified by experimental results.

  • Objectives : To investigate the role of Meridian flow on acupuncture effect, we observed the therapeutic effects of electroacupuncture (EA) after Meridian blocking with pressure in arthritic rats. Methods : To make reliable and local monoarthritis, $40{\;}{\mu}l$ complete Freund's adjuvant was injected into the tibio-tarsal joint. EA was applied on acupoint GB30 while 5 Pascal pressure was added to the middle of the Gall bladder Meridian around GB31 between acupoint GB30 and arthritic foci (ipsilateral meridian blocking: IB) or opposite part of IB (contralateral part blocking: CB). To observe the change of arthritis, extension and flexion pain scores and circumferential differences were evaluated once a week. Results : EA stimulation without blocking reduced arthritic pain significantly. IB abolished the acupuncture effects and there was no statistical difference with the arthritic control group, whereas the CB group still showed the therapeutic effects of acupuncture. Conclusions : This finding strongly supports that the Meridian blocking with local pressure reduced the therapeutic effect of EA.

  • A laboratory- scale dual-column biofilter system was used to study the biofiltration of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS). The gas flow rate and DMDS concentration to the biofilter were varied to study their effect on the remov-al of dimethyl disulfide. Operating parameters such as pH, temperature, and water content were monitored during the biofilter operation and necessary precautions were taken to keep these parameters within the acceptable limits. It was observed that the removal efficiency of DMDS was optimal at neutral pH values. After five month op-eration, the neutralization of the filter beds with sodium carbonate became necessary for the optimum operation of the biofilters. The microbial population already present in the compost mixtures was found to be adequate in treat-ing DMDS. The compost mixtures were found to be similar in terms of biofiltration efficiency of DMDS. However, pressure drops observed in the first column compost mixture (compost/ peat mulch) was extremely high, making this compost economically not feasible. The second mixture (compost/bark) provided pressure drops within accept-able limits. A minimum residence time of 30 seconds at the optimal operating conditions appeared to be adequate for achieving high removal efficiencies (>90%).

  • In order to control the water quality in rivers or lakes, it is needed to evaluate accurate amount of pollutant loadings from watersheds. The daily pollutant loadings were simulated using the pollutant loading calculation model which was composed of mathematical equations superimposed on the TANK model. The calibration of runoff and pollutant loading parameters were carried out with observed data, using a trial-and-error method. In addition, the proposed model was applied to evaluate its applicability for the representative watershed, the Bokha river watershed, Icheon city, Korea. The parameters of SS and T-P showed large values in the first tank while T-N showed large in the second tank. As a result of simulating the daily pollutant loadings by the pollutant loading calculation model, all of SS, T-N and T-P loadings were increased or decreased according to the amount of runoff discharge. Especially, it was apparent that SS and T-P loadings were significantly influenced by the runoff variation when it was rain. These results could partly explain that SS and T-P would occur mainly from the surface runoff while T-N would occur from both surface and subsurface flow.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of behavior of nutrients such as TN (Total nitrogen), TDN (Total dissolved nitrogen), TP (Total phosphorus) TDP (Total dissolved phosphorous) in runoff water from a nonpoint source dominated watershed ($6.67\;km^2$). Regular and intensive flow measurement and water sampling were taken during two years (February 2002 to January 2004) in the Ingyeong River, a tributary of the Han River. The mean concentrations of nutrients during rainy days were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those during dry days. The mean TDN/TN ratio in rainy days (95%) is almost identical to that in dry days (96%), but mean TDP/TP ratio in rainy days (24%) significantly decreased compared with that in dry days (66%), suggesting that dominant form of TP is shifted from dissolved form to particulate form. Accordingly, the measures (.eg. filter strips, cover crops) to reduce soil erosion for fallow upland in the rainy season should be taken to control particulate phosphorous.

  • Analysis of the internal state of the blast furnace is necessary to predict and to control the operating conditions. Especially, it is important to develop models of the blast furnace to predict the cohesive zone because shape of the cohesive zone influences overall operating conditions of blast furnace such as gas flow, chemical reactions and temperature. Because many previous blast furnace models have assumed cohesive zone to be fixed, it was not possible to evaluate the shape change of cohesive zone in relation with operating conditions such as PCR, blast condition, and production rate. In this study, an axi-symmetric 2-dimensional steady state model is proposed to simulate blast furnace processes. In this model, cohesive zone is determined by the solid temperature. Finite volume method is employed for numerical simulation. To find location of the cohesive zone, entire calculation procedure is iterated until converged. Through this approach, shape of the cohesive zone, velocity and temperature within the furnace are predicted from the model.

  • Reburning is one of the most useful technologies for reducing nitric oxide in economically and technically. The reburning process was demonstrated as an effective NOx reduction method through injection of a secondary hydrocarbon fuel. An experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effect of biomass reburning on NOx and CO formation in a light oil flamed combustion furnace. Reburning tests on NOx reduction of air-carried rice husk powder as the reburn fuel and light oil as the main fuel were performed in flames stabilized by a co-flow swirl and fuel staged burner, which was mounted at the front of the furnace. The results included flue gas emissions and temperature distribution in the furnace for several kinds of experimental conditions. It was observed clearly that NOx concentrations in the exhaust have considerably decreased due to effect of biomass reburning. The maximum NOx reduction rate was 42% when the reburn fuel fraction was 0.18. The CO emissions were kept under 42 ppmv in all experimental tests. And this paper makes clear that in order to decrease NOx concentration in the exhaust when the biomass reburning system is adapted, the control of some factors such as reburn fuel fraction and reburn zone fraction is very important.
