Since the inhibition of floral induction was considered to be an important subject to get high yield of Angelica gigas, the effects of low temperature, daylengh and shading were investigated in this study. The yield of A. gigas root grown by inhibition of floral induction was compared with the yield obtained by traditional cultivation method. When the seedings were exposed to the natural low air temperature condition until late of November, the plants which had 6 to 8 leaves showed vernalizing effect, and when the low temperature treatment was prolonged until mid of January, 4 to 5 leaf plants showed vernalizing effect. But 2 to 3 leaf plants did not show vernalizing effect regardless of the length of chilling treatment. The effectiveness of exposure to low temperature was markedly dependent upon the age of plants. In the artificial low temperature treatment the range of temperature varied with plant age. Vernalizing effect at 1,5 and 9$^{\circ}C$ of temperature did not show 3,5,6 leaf plants, respectively. The bolting percent in 8 leaf plant at 1,5 and 9$^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks decreased by 80,45 and 5%, respectively. As daylength became longer, the bolting percent of A. gigas was increased. plants which were grown in the full sunlight showed the highest value in bolting percent, and the bolting percent was not decreased significantly with changing from full sunlight to 50% shading. When A. gigas were grown by the inhibition of floral induction, dry root weight per l0a showed the greatest value in 3 year old plant which 3.6 and 2.4 times higher than that of 1 and 2 year old plant, respectively. The yield of root was increased by 73.7% in 2 year old plant and 159.6% in 3 year old plant compared with the yield obtained by traditional cultivation method.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the unexpected early loss of leaves on a newly-bred kiwifruit on the regrowth of axillary buds the current season and the early growth and development the following year.METHODS AND RESULTS: The vines were defoliated on Jul. 18, Aug. 16, and Sep. 17 in 2012 and on Jul. 16, Aug. 13, and Sep. 12 in 2013. The vines were defoliated 0 (control), 50, and 100% of the total number of leaves on a vine. The regrowth of axillary buds at 30 days after defoliation increased in proportion to defoliation degrees regardless of the defoliated time. Defoliation the previous season did not influence percent budbreak the next season. Percentage of floral shoots of the control vines was 27.4%, each bearing 2-3 flowers. In those vines defoliated 100% in August and September, however, percent floral shoots and number of flowers significantly reduced.CONCLUSION(S): Defoliation in July, August, and September didnot affect percent budbreak the following year regardless of degrees of defoliation. A 100% defoliation in August and September significantly reduced flowering the following year compared to the control; that in August resulted in no floral buds at all.
Rearing environment direct effects on oviposition preference of black soldier fly(Hermetia illucens). In this study, the number of egg-filled flutes was surveyed according to the size of adult rearing cages and oviposition media of black soldier fly (BSF). The height of the adult rearing cages were fixed at 2 m and provided different sizes of width and length and released 20,000 BSF adults in the rearing cages. The mean number of BSF egg-filled flutes was 895.4 at $4{\times}4m$ cage, 876.3 at $2{\times}1m$ cage and 62.3 at $1{\times}1m$ cage. Comparison of egg-filled flutes was according to cages material of adult BSF. The mean number of egg-filled flutes were 820.7 and 604.3 at different cage materials such as mosquito net and green house film. The mean numbers of egg-filled flutes were 326.6 in green floral form, 135.2 in green corrugated cardboard and 41.0 in brown corrugated cardboard. And the mean number of egg-filled flutes were similar floral form with the corrugated cardboard was overlapped by floral form such as 57.7 and 64.7. The mean number of egg-filled flutes was 29.0 and 48.2 in 6 mm and 4 mm diameter of oviposition hole.

BACKGROUND: Kiwifruit, which was introduced to Korea in late 1970s, is a warm-temperate fruit tree, whose leaves are easily damaged by wind because of their large size. To produce high quality fruits, efficient windbreak is necessary to protect leaves until harvest. In Korea, typhoons from July onwards usually influence the production of kiwifruit. Damages from typhoons include low fruit quality in the current year and low flowering ratio the following year. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of early defoliation of kiwifruit vines from July to October on the regrowth of shoot axillary buds the current year and bud break and flowering the following year. METHODS AND RESULTS: Scions of kiwifruit cultivar 'Goldrush' were veneer grafted onto five-year-old Actinidia deliciosa rootstocks, planted in Wagner pots (13L) and grown in a rain shelter. Kiwifruit leaves in the proximity of leaf stalk were cut by lopping shears to simulate mechanical damage from typhoon since only leaf stalks were left when kiwifruit vines were damaged by typhoons. Kiwifruit vines were defoliated from July 15 to October 14 with one monthintervals and degrees of defoliation were 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%. All experiments were conducted in the rain shelter and replicated at least five times. Defoliation in July 15 resulted in a high regrowth ratio of 20-40% regardless of degree of defoliation but that in August 16 showed only 5.8% of regrowth ratio in the no defoliation treatment; however, more than 25% of defoliation in August 16 showed 17-23% of regrowth ratio. In September 15, regrowth ratio decreased further to less than 10% in all treatments and no regrowth was observed in October 14. Percent bud break of all defoliation treatments were not significant in comparison to 64.7% in no defoliation except for 42.1% and 42.9% in 100% defoliation in July 15 and August 16, respectively. Floral shoot in the no defoliation treatment was 70.2% and defoliation of 50% or less resulted in the same or increased floral shoot ratio in July 15, August 16, and September 15; however, defoliation in October 14 showed no difference in all treatments. In flower number per floral shoot, 2-3 flowers appeared in no defoliation and only 1 flower was observed when the vines were defoliated more than 50% in July 15 and September 15. In October 14, contrary to the floral shoot ratio, flower number decreased with increased defoliation. CONCLUSION(S): Therefore, it is suggested that dormancy of 'Goldrush' axillary buds, was started in August and completed in October. The effect of defoliation on bud break of axillary buds the following year was insignificant, except for 100% defoliation in July 15 and August 16. From July 15 to September 15, floral bud ratio was significantly reduced when more than 50% of leaves were defoliated compared to no defoliation. Also, the number of flowers per flower-bearing shoot the following year decreased by less than 50% when compared to no defoliation, and this decrease was more prominent in September 15 than July 15 and August 16.

This study aims to find an original form of temple flower decoration patterns, considering floral lattice pattern as a view element composing temple landscape. To that end, we analyzed and interpreted the form and symbol expressed in the floral lattice pattern at Nahanjeon of Seonghyel Temple at Yeongju, Gyeongsangbukdo. The front side of Nahanjeon windows shows a sculpture with 176 pure patterns in a form where two squares are in sequence. The basic concept of main front door (the inner gate of Nahanjeon) frames is considered the design language of lotus pond that symbolizes "square land" in traditional gardens. The four leaf clover and arrowhead are water plants discovered in areas nearby ponds, which are a realistic expression conforming to the water ecology of lotus pond. The lotus, which is the most important plant at the main front door, indicates purity, a non-stained state, and the world of the lotus sanctuary, which is the land of blissful happiness in Buddhism. The lotus expressed in the floral lattice pattern is spread in a diverse form, containing the features of creation and destruction, showing the landscape character of the "One Body of Buddha and Lotus". The expression of flying birds such as kingfishers and egrets is an ecologically aesthetic idea to infuse dynamism and vitality into a seemingly static aquatic ecosystem. The floral lattice pattern contains lotus pond scenery showing symbiosis of animals(i.e., dragons, frogs, crabs, fishes, egrets, wild geese, and kingfishers) and plants(i.e., four leaf clovers and arrowheads), which are symbols of relief faith for longevity, wealth, preciousness, and many sons. The pattern is not just an ecological aesthetic expression but a holistic harmony of ecological components such as growth and disappearance of lotus and its leaves, fitting habitats, symbiosis, and food chain.

Astragalus membranaceus has flowers that are similar to that of the legume family, but shows poor bearing when self-pollination is induced. Thus, this study was carried out observing the ripening procedure of pistils and stamens and development stages of pollen in the context of the birth and growth of the flower. As to the bearing of the flower of A. membranaceus, few pod setting and 13% pod setting were observed when self-pollination is induced by paper-bag covering or artificial pollination treated respectively. The result indicates that A. membranaceus is a cross-pollination plant. A pistil grew faster than a stamen until just before blooming. The flower size was about 17.0mm$\times$4.0mm. Pistils and stamens had the same length after flowering. Pollen mother cells passed through meiosis and mitosis when its length reached around 3.5mm, thus creating the tetrade when 4 mm long. Pollen attained full growth when the bud was about 10mm long. An anther was found to tend to dehisce when the length of a bud reached around 12.0mm. As to the shape of pollen, about 70 % were normal. 1% and 30 % were small or empty pollen respectively. The result indicates that pollen of A. membranaceus attains full growth just before anther dehiscence which occurs before blooming while pistils grow faster than stamens until before flowering.

The purpose of this study is to fiure out the floral changes during three years after construction of the Youido Ecology Park. Yearly change of plant species composition, distributed at the research field, had been investigated for three years since 1996. To compare and investigate the changes of the establishment of the Ecology Park, we have analyzed the distribution characteristics of plant species, exotic naturalized species, and so on. The results obtained through this investigation are as follows; 1) Total numbers of plant species were 106, 170, 175, and 148, in the year of 1996, 1998 1999, and 2000, respectively. While the most of cultivated species before th establishment were decreased, the naturalized species such Phargmites communis Trin, and Artemisia selengensis Turcz. etc, were increased. 2) Forty three species of exotic naturalized species were investigated and were increased at the early stage of the establishment, but showed decreasing trend recently. 3) Sixty five species of introduced and planted species were investigated. Most of them were occurred at the first year after the establishment, but since 1999, there has been a significant decrease. 4) Sixty seven species among total 235 were verified as the wetland-adapted plants. The ratio to the total numbers were low, but the occupied area of a few species was expanded. Therefore, it indicates that monitoring on the physical environments of the Youido Ecology Park was urgently required.
The fungal flora of Korean wood-rotting fungi were studied for two years from March of 1990 to February of 1992. Fresh fungi were collected from national parks, some local areas, and several islands throughout the country. Fleshy ascomycetes and jelly fungi were examined through identification and literature studies. They were counted 52 species, 1 subspecies, and 1 forma among which, Hypoxylon and Femsjonia were confirmed as unrecorded genera and Hypoxylon punctulatum, Exidia recisa, and Femsjonia pezizaeformis as unrecorded species to Korea and are registered here with descriptions.
Several growth characteristics of two ornamental tobacco species, Nicotiana sanderae and N. affinis, were investigated in this study. Also effect of temperature and daylength on the flowering of the tobacco plants were evaluated to obtain basic information on breeding and cultivation. 1. The plants were great in high temperature-long day at the early stage and in low temperature-short day at the late stage of plant growth, for both Nicotana species. At the early growth stage the leaf length N. sanderae was great in high temperature-long day, and that of N. affinis was great in high temperature-short day period, while at the late stage of the plant growth the leaf lengths were more significantly effected by the temperature rather than daylength. Leaf width and leaf shape index were less sensitive to the conditions. 2. For both of the species, the total number of tobacco leaves not much influenced by the temperature and daylength. 3. There were no significant differences for budding and flowering period between the two species, both of which were sensitive to temperature and daylength with more influence by daylength than temperature. 4. Number of floral stalks, number of flower and flowering period were not much influenced by temperature and daylength; however, N. affinis had 2 more floral stalks, 31 more flowers, and 6 day longer flowering period than N. sanderae.
There are many types of spring blossoms on the Daedeok campus of Chungnam National University (CNU) at the area of 1,600,000 square meters. As an assignment for the class of Analytical Chemistry I for second-year undergraduate students, 2021, flower petals collected from various floral groups (Korean azalea, Korean forsythia, Dilatata lilac, Lilytree, Lily magnolia, and Prunus yedoensis) were analyzed using headspace extraction coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS) to study the aromatic profiles and fragrance compounds of each sample group. Various types of compounds associated with the aroma profiles were detected, including saturated alcohols and aldehydes (ethanol, 1-hexanol, and nonanal), terpenes (limonene, pinene, and ocimene), and aromatic compounds (benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde). The different contribution of these compounds for each floral type was visualized using statistical tools and classification models based on principal component analysis with high reliability (R2 = 0.824, Q2 = 0.616). These results showed that HS-GC-MS with statistical analysis is a powerful method to characterize the volatile aromatic profile of biological specimens.
