  • Compared with general rivers, fluctuations of the water level and the river bed are severe in the tidal river. In hydro-dynamic aspect, such fluctuation gives different river-bed data to us according to observing period. The time-dependent river-bed data and pre-estimation of the Manning's roughness coefficient which is the key factor of numerical modelling induces uncertainty of evaluating the design flood level. Thus it is necessary to pay more attention to calculate the flood level at tidal rivers than at general rivers. In this study, downstream of the Imjin River where is affected by tide of the West Sea selected as a study site. From the numerical modelling, it was shown that the unsteady simulation gave considerable mitigation of the water level from the starting point to 15 km upstream compared to the steady simulation. Either making a detention pond or optional dredging was not effective to mitigate the flood level at Gugok - Majung region where is located in the downstream of the Imjin River. Therefore, a more sophisticated approach is required to evaluate the design flood level estimation before constructive measures adopted in general rivers when establishing the flood control plan in a tidal river.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate chemical water quality by hourly monitoring(25hr) of Saemangeum esturary. For this study, we selected 2 sites like a Mangyong Bridge(St. 6) and Dongjin Bridge(St. 7). Inflow of salt water was not detected during low tide(maximum 553, 508cm) of all stations, while the salinity rises were detected in spring tide(750cm). When 602m of maximum tide was reached, salinity concentration was increased at St. 7, while there was no change in St. 6. Therefore, We know that salinity variation is greatly influenced by tide height at survey site. Also, significant variance of salinity(p<0.05) was found between St. 6 and St. 7 because dike construction made the flood tide move into the Dongjin river. Total suspened solids(TSS) concentration was increased because of the river runoff at St. 6, and also the turbulance and resuspension according to salt intrusion at St. 7. During the high tide, the water discharge from the sea seemed to dilute the nutrient but to elevate TSS concentration in St. 7. Silicate and nitrate concentrations in the studied site were decreased by the mixing of sea water, whereas the evident trend of phosphate concentration was not found. This result can be explained by the phosphorus condition. Phosphorus exists inactive when it is affected by hydrated iron and adsorbed onto suspended matters. Compared to the environmental conditions of the St. 6 and St. 7, physical factors such as temperature, dissolved oxygen and TSS have statistically no significant difference(p<0.001), but nutrient concentrations were higher at St. 6 than St. 7. It could be suggested from these results that it is important to control the discharge of fresh water by sewage treatment plants located in St. 6 for water quality management.

  • In a sandy shore surf zone of Dolsan Island, diel, tidal and seasonal effects on abundance of Acartia omorii were investigated at three sites, the bottom and surface of 1 m depth and water's edge using a sledge-net. Of these sites, the abundance of A. omorii was the highest in the bottom. Seasonal abundance data showed that A. omorii was more abundant in winter than other seasons. During the study period, the abundance of A. omorii was always higher during ebb tide than flood, The distribution patterns of A. omorii were more influenced by tide than diel change, Strong current during spring tide possiblely affected the diel migration pattern, In winter A. omorii showed a diel vortical migration in neap tide, whereas it showed a reverse vortical diel migration in spring tide. Distribution centers were located at a layer of $50\~100\;cm$ below mean sea level (MSL) during neap tide, and then it moved slightly upward during spring tide.

  • This research observed the cross section current of 7 survey lines in Seokmo Channel of Gyeonggi bay with a lot of freshwater inflow and S-shaped for 13 hours during flood season and neap tide. We indicated the distribution of the current velocity by comprehending the speed and direction of the current velocity of each line during maximum flood, ebb tide and observed the distribution of salinity. Moreover, in order to understand what lateral momentum causes the lateral flow in each survey line, we practiced the momentum analysis through the observation data. As a result, the lateral baroclinic pressure gradient force and vertical friction of the Seokmo channel during neap tide were the strongest, and this is why the flow by the distribution of salinity and stratification most often occurs. In north of the Seokmo channel, where have wide intertidal and a lot of freshwater inflow, the secondary circulation is caused by balance of lateral baroclinic pressure gradient force and other forces, and the vertical friction was strong in the lines with small depth. On the other hand, in the southern part of the Seokmo channel where the water is deep and the waterway is curved, the advective acceleration and centrifugal force become stronger by the geographical causes during ebb and the influence of fresh water. Therefore, the lateral flow in the Seokmo channel was caused by the distribution of the momentum that differs by location, depth, curve, etc.

  • Geomorphic changes and sedimentary changes are investigated by sediment analysis from estuarine tidal flat, Mosan Bay Estuary, which is a tide-dominated and rias estuary. Sediments separatedly deposited during the early Holocene and the late Holocene. There are unconformities between the early Holocene sediment unit and the late Holocene sediment unit. Developments of these unconformities were related with fluctuated sea level change during the mid Holocene. Three deposit zones are spatially classified, which are named "intermittent tide channel deposit zone"(A1, B1, D3), "flood-dominated deposit zone"(A3, B3, C1, C3), and "fluvial sediment deposit zone"(A2, B2). This classification is explained by three main effects; laterally restricted migration of a tidal channel, diffract flood effect and settling lag effect, and fluvial induced reworking. These effects are deserved as main factors which have formed estuarine geomorphology in tidedominated and rias estuary. This study suggests research directions in reconstructing estuarine geomorphic and sedimentary change in west coast of Korea. Furthermore, it gives useful data for making a "land-ocean interaction" model for west coast of Korea.

  • In tidal rivers, the water level is affected by a tidal wave. The latter creates higher flood stages that enlarge the flood plain areas and increase potential damages. In such rivers, the water level is not solely a function of the flow discharge but rather a joint function of both the discharge and tidal phenomena. This paper attempts at formulating a relation between tital water level and river flow discharge that can be used for the predictions of water level in coastal rivers. Numerical applications were performed on the HaDong and the SongJung Station in Sumjin river with satisfactory results. The correlation coefficients between the tide(M) and the water stage(Z) at the HaDong Station is 0.558, and SongJung is 0.016. From this result, the water level at HaDong Station is greatly affected by a tide, whereas songJung is not.

  • Field observation and numerical experiments with a two-dimensional depth-integrated model were undertaken in order to investigate some of the effects on the flow structure resulting from the construction of a bridge connecting Kohung Peninsula and the Narodo Islands on the southern coast of Korea. Tidal currents passing through the straits between the Narodo Islands showed that, although the phase lagged one hour behind that passing through the strait between Kohung Peninsula and Naenarodo Island, it still kept strong flows of more than 80cm/sec near the bottom. The seawater temperature and salinity within the study area seemed to be higher southward but uniform vertically. The results of the drogue experiments in the straits between the Narodo Islands showed that the drogues moved northward of Sayangdo in the early part of the flood tide, but southward in the late part of the flood tide and finally stopped a mile from the east coast of Surakdo. On the other hand, the numerical computation showed that the flow structures after construction of the bridge piers were basically in line with those before construction of the bridge piers, except for the slight variations of velocities in the vicinity of the bridge piers. A large scale clockwise circulation has been confirmed in the south area of Namsungri of Kohung Peninsula from the computational results of tide-induced residual currents. Referring to these computational results, the impact category on the flow structures due to the bridge piers construction has been estimated to be within around 2km. The results were in good agreement with the field observations.

  • In this study, a flood routing model is used for analyzing change of flood stage induced by various factors. The results by using the past cross section measurement data showed the minimum error in case of accurate measurement of cross section as well as reasonable boundary condition of model. In analyzing the rise of flood stage of main stream considering Inflow magnitude of tributary, it showed that the larger the flow magnitude is, the smaller the variance of stage is. The results of analysis in the tidal effect at Wolgot are that the tidal effect influence the stage profile into upstream in case of normal discharge of main stream and tributary but doesn't influence it even with maximum flood tide in case of project flood. Finally, when the various hydraulic factors are considered in numerical analysis, more systematic and realistic flood forecast system is able to be performed.

  • In this study, spectral analysis was conducted to identify environmental factors af ecting short-term changes in water temperature in the East, West and South coasts of Korea. The data used in the spectrum analysis is the 2016 summer water temperature, air temperature, tide level and wind data provided by Korea Hydrographic & Oceanographic Agency. In power spectrum results, peaks of water temperature and tide level were observed at same periods in West Sea (Incheon, Pyeungteak, Gunsan and Mokpo) and South Sea (Wando, Goheung, Yeosu, Tongyeong and Masan) where mean tidal range was more than 100 cm. On the other hand, periodicity of water temperature did not appear in East Sea and Busan where the mean tidal range was small. Coherence analysis showed that water temperature was highly correlated with tide in West Sea and three stations(Wando, Goheung and Tongyeong) of South Sea. Especially, correlation between water temperature and tide level in Wando and Tongyeong presented 0.96 at semi-diurnal period. Water temperature in Yeosu seems to have influenced by tide and inflow of fresh water. In Masan, water temperature is influenced by south wind, tide and inflow of fresh water. In East Sea, influence of tide on water temperature is small due to current and small tidal range. As a result of comparing the time series graph, stations where the correlation between water temperature and tide is high show that relatively cold water was inputted at flood tide and flow out at ebb tide. short-term variation of water temperature was affected by tide, but long-term variation over a month was affected by air temperature.

  • A primitive equation numerical model driven only by $M_2$ tide is used to examine role of tide in the temperature and velocity fields of Deukryang Bay. The numerical model reproduces several features of the observational temperature fields such that the isotherms tend to be parallel to the coast in the bay, and the colder water exists at the right hand side in the bay. The horizontal temperature and velocity fields in the model are dominantly influenced by bottom topography. The model also shows that the surface colder water in the bay is accompanied by strong-alongshore current during the flood tide. An investigation for baroclinicity in the bay by additional numerical experiment indicates that the baroclinirity in velocity field is very weak. The model, however, did not reproduce a stratification in the observation, implying that the model needs to add other semi-diurnal components such as $S_2,\;O_2\;or\;K_2$ tides to $M_2$ tide.
