The frequency of typhoons and torrential rainfalls has increased due to climate change, and the concurrent risk of breakage of dams and reservoirs has increased due to structural aging. To cope with the risk of dam breakage, a more accurate emergency action plan (EAP) must be established, and more advanced technology must be developed for the prediction of flooding. Hence, the present study proposes a method for establishing a more effective EAP by performing flood and inundation analyses using one- and two-dimensional models. The probable maximum flood (PMF) under the condition of probable maximum precipitation (PMP) was calculated for the target area, namely the Gyeong-cheon reservoir watershed. The breakage scenario of the Gyeong-cheon reservoir was then built up, and breakage simulations were conducted using the dam-break flood forecasting (DAMBRK) model. The results of the outflow analysis at the main locations were used as the basis for the one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) flood inundation analyses using the watershed modeling system (WMS) and the FLUvial Modeling ENgine (FLUMEN), respectively. The maximum inundation area between the Daehari-cheon confluence and the Naeseong-cheon location was compared for each model. The 1D flood inundation analysis gave an area of 21.3 km2, and the 2D flood inundation analysis gave an area of 21.9 km2. Although these results indicate an insignificant difference of 0.6 km2 in the inundation area between the two models, it should be noted that one of the main locations (namely, the Yonggung-myeon Administrative and Welfare Center) was not inundated in the 1D (WMS) model but inundated in the 2D (FLUMEN) model.
A GIS-based paddy inundation simulation system which is capable of simulating temporal and spatial inundation processes was established and applied in this paper. The system is composed of HEC-GeoHMS, and HEC-GeoRAS modules which interface the GIS and flood runoff models, and HEC-HMS, and HEC-RAS models which estimate the flood runoff. It was used to simulate storm runoff and inundation for a small rural watershed, the Baran HP#7, which is 10.69 $km^2$ in size. The simulated peak runoff, time to peak, and total direct runoff for eight storms were compared with the observed data. The results showed that the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) for the observed peak runoff was 0.99 and an error, RMSE, 11.862 $m^3$/s for calibration stages. In the model verification, $R^2$ was 0.99 and RMSE 1.296 $m^3$/s. Paddy inundation for each paddy growing stages in study watershed were estimated using verified inundation simulation system when probability rainfall was applied.
In this study, flood inundations have been simulated by using the numerical model FLUMEN solving the shallow-water equations with a finite volume method. Before applying to a real problem, the numerical model is first applied to simplified problems. Obtained numerical results are verified by comparing to available analytical solutions and laboratory measurements. Reasonable agreements are observed. The model is then applied to a simulation of flood events with real geometries. The results of the present study provide basic informations for a flood inundation map.
Recent studies show the possibility of more frequent extreme events as a result of the changing climate. These weather extremes, such as excessive rainfall, result to debris flow, river overflow and urban flooding, which post a substantial threat to the community. Therefore, an effective flood model is a crucial tool in flood disaster mitigation. In recent years, a number of flood models has been established; however, the major challenge in developing effective and accurate inundation models is the inconvenience of running multiple models for separate conditions. Among the solutions in recent researches is the development of the combined 1D-2D flood modeling. The coupled 1D-2D river flood modeling allows channel flows to be represented in 1D and the overbank flow to be modeled over two-dimension. To test the efficiency of this approach, this research aims to assess the capability of HEC-RAS model's implementation of the combined 1D-2D hydraulic simulation of river overflow inundation, and compare with the results of GERIS and FLUMENS 2D flood model. Results show similar output to the flood models that had used different methods. This proves the applicability of the HEC-RAS 1D-2D coupling method as a powerful tool in simulating accurate inundation for flood events.
The objective of this study is to analyze the flood inundation in a low-lying rural area. The study watershed selected for this study includes the Il-Pae and Ahn-Gok watersheds. It is located in the Namyangju, Korea and encompasses $3.64km^2$. A major flood event that occurred in July 2011 was chosen as the case for the flood inundation analysis. The Hydrologic Engineering Center's Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) and River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) were used to simulate flood runoff and water surface elevation at each cross-section, respectively. The watershed topographic, soil, and land use data were processed using the GIS (Geographic Information System) tool for the models. The contribution to the total flood volume was estimated based on the results simulated by HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS. The results showed that the overflow discharge from the Il-Pae stream constituted 80% of the total flood volume. The contributions of rainfall falling directly on the inundation area and overflow discharge from the Ahn-Gok stream were 15 % and 5 %, respectively. The simulation results in different levee scenarios for the Ahn-Gok stream were also compared. The results indicated that the levee could reduce the flood volume a little bit.
This study proposes rainwater infiltration retention blocks as a solution to the flooding problems caused by recent climate change and developed a flood prediction simulation program to select the optimal site for installing rainwater infiltration retention blocks that can minimize damage from floods. By applying the existing 2D flood analysis model G2D and adding a reservoir function, the volume of water before and after installation can be determined through simulation results.
The analysis of the spatial extent of flood inundation is important for flood mitigation. Geographic Information System (GIS) has advantage of analyzing spatial distributed data. Hydrologic Engineering Center's River Analsysis System(HEC-RAS) with HEC-GeoRAS was used to analyze flood inundation. HEC-GeoRAS, which is an ArcView GIS extension designed to process geospatial data for HEC-RAS, is a useful tool for storing, managing, analyzing, and displaying spatially distributed data. Rational formula and 24-hr duration probability precipitation data of Suwon meteorological station were used to estimate the flood runoff. And water profiles were calculated using the HEC-RAS model with HEC-GeoRAS. The flooded region is 8.24ha when 50-yr probability precipitation was applied and 8.8ha when 100-yr was applied to Bahlan study watershed which is located in Whasung county, Kyunggi province, having an area of $29.79km^{2}$.
