In general, to maximize the supply and efficiency of floating offshore wind power generation energy, the motion caused by wave attenuation of the substructure must be reduced. According to previous studies, the motion response was reduced due to the vortex viscosity generated by the damping plate installed in the lower structure among the waves. In this study, a 5 MW semi-submersible OC5 platform and two platforms with attenuation plates were designed, and free decay experiments and numerical calculations were performed to confirm the effect of reducing motion due to vortex viscosity. As a result of the model test, when the heave free decay tests were conducted at drop heights of 30 mm, 40 mm, and 50 mm, compared with the OC5 platform, the platform with two types of damping plates attached had relatively improved motion damping performance. In the model test and numerical calculation results, the damping plate models, KSNU Plate 1 and KSNU Plate 2, were 1.1 times and 1.3 times lower than OC5, respectively, and the KSNU Plate 2 platform showed about two times better damping performance than OC5. This study shows that the area of the damping plate and the vortex viscosity are closely related to the damping rate of the heave motion.
The motion behaviors including hydrodynamic interaction and mechanical coupling effects on multiple-body floating platforms are simulated by using a time domain hull/mooring/riser coupled dynamics analysis program. The objective of this study is to evaluate off-diagonal hydrodynamic interaction effects and mechanical coupling effects on tandem moored FPSO and shuttle taker motions. In the multiple-body floating platforms interaction, hydrodynamic coupling effects with waves and mechanical coupling effects through the connectors should be considered. Thus, in this study, the multiple-body platform motions are calculated by Combined Matrix Method (CMM) as well as Separated Matrix Method (SMM). The advantage of the combined matrix method is that it can include all the 6Nx6N full hydrodynamic and mechanical interaction effects among N bodies. Whereas, due to the larger matrix size, the calculation time of Combined Matrix Method (CMM) is longer than the Separated Matrix Method (SMM). On the other hand, Separated Matrix Method (SMM) cannot include the off-diagonal 6x6 hydrodynamic interaction coefficients although it can fully include mechanical interactions among N bodies. To evaluate hydrodynamic interaction and mechanical coupling effects, tandem moored FPSO and shuttle tanker is simulated by Combined Matrix Method (CMM) and Separated Matrix Method (SMM). The calculation results give a good agreement between Combined Matrix Method (CMM) and Separated Matrix Method (SMM). The results show that the Separated Matrix Method (SMM) is more efficient for tandem moored FPSO and shuttle tanker. In the numerical calculation, the hydrodynamic coefficients are calculated from a 3D diffraction/radiation panel program WAMIT, and wind and current forces are generated by using the respective coefficients given in the OCIMF data sheet.
Cargo, such as a Tension Leg Platform (TLP), Semi-submersible platform (Semi), Spar or a circular Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO), are frequently dry-transported on a Heavy Lift Vessel (HLV) from the point of construction to the point of installation. The voyage can span months and the overhanging portions of the hull can be subject to frequent wave slamming events in rough weather. Tie-downs or sea-fastening are usually provided to ensure the safety of the cargo during the voyage and to keep the extreme responses of the cargo, primarily for the installed equipment and facilities, within the design limits. The proper design of the tie-down is dependent on the accurate prediction of the wave slamming loads the cargo will experience during the voyage. This is a difficult task and model testing is a widely accepted and adopted method to obtain reliable sea-fastening loads and extreme accelerations. However, it is crucial to realize the difference in the inherent stiffness of the instrument that is used to measure the tri-axial sea fastening loads and the prototype design of the tie-downs. It is practically not possible to scale the tri-axial load measuring instrument stiffness to reflect the real tie-down stiffness during tests. A correlation method is required to systematically and consistently account for the stiffness differences and correct the measured results. Direct application of the measured load tends to be conservative and lead to over-design that can reflect on the overall cost and schedule of the project. The objective here is to employ the established correlation method to provide proper high-frequency responses to topsides and hull design teams. In addition, guidance for optimizing tie-down design to avoid damage to the installed equipment, facilities and structural members can be provided.
This paper proposes an effective inertia coefficient (EIC) in the Morison equation for better wave-force calculations. The OC4 semi-submersible floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) platform was considered to test the feasibility. Large diffraction at large Keulegan-Carpenter (KC) numbers and the interaction between columns can result in errors in estimating the wave force using the Morison equation with a theoretical inertia coefficient, which can be corrected by the EIC as a function of the wave period and direction. The horizontal and vertical wave forces were calculated using the Morison equation and potential theory at each column, wave period, and wave direction. The EICs of each column were then obtained, resulting in a minimal difference between the Morison inertia force and the wave excitation force by the potential theory. The EICs, wave forces, phase angles, and dynamic motions were compared to confirm the feasibility of an EIC concept under regular and random waves.

The subsea power cables are increasingly important for harvesting renewable energies as we develop offshore wind farms located at a long distance from shore. Particularly, the continuous flexural motion of inter-array dynamic power cable of floating offshore wind turbine causes tremendous fatigue damages on the cable. As the subsea power cable consists of the helical structures with various components unlike a mooring line and a steel pipe riser, the fatigue analysis of the cables should be performed using special procedures that consider stick/slip phenomenon. This phenomenon occurs between inner helically wound components when they are tensioned or compressed by environmental loads and the floater motions. In particular, Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) can be generated by currents and have significant impacts on the fatigue life of the cable. In this study, the procedure for VIV fatigue analysis of the dynamic power cable has been established. Additionally, the respective roles of programs employed and required inputs and outputs are explained in detail. Demonstrations of case studies are provided under severely sheared currents to investigate the influences on amplitude variations of dynamic power cables caused by the excitation of high mode numbers. Finally, sensitivity studies have been performed to compare dynamic cable design parameters, specifically, structural damping ratio, higher order harmonics, and lift coefficients tables. In the future, one of the fundamental assumptions to assess the VIV response will be examined in detail, namely a narrow-banded Gaussian process derived from the VIV amplitudes. Although this approach is consistent with current industry standards, the level of consistency and the potential errors between the Gaussian process and the fatigue damage generated from deterministic time-domain results are to be confirmed to verify VIV fatigue analysis procedure for slender marine structures.
As well as the strength check, fatigue life check is also mainly required for designing mooring lines of the floating structures. In general, forces which induce dynamic structural response significantly affect to fatigue design of the mooring lines. So, waves are mainly considered as the governing loading for fatigue design of the mooring lines. In this study, characteristics of the fatigue damage of the mooring lines for submerged floating tunnels (SFT) under irregular waves are investigated. For this study time domain hydrodynamic analysis is used to obtain motion of the tunnel and tension and stresses of the mooring lines under the specific environmental conditions. Also, the Rainflow-counting method, the Palmgren-Miner's rule, and S-N curves for floating offshore structures presented by DNV recommendation is applied to calculate the fatigue damage due to the fluctuating stresses. Referring to the design plactice of the tendon pipes for TLP (tension-leg platform), which is very similar structural system to SFT, it is assumed that a 100 year return period wave attacks the SFT systems during 48 hours and the fatigue damages due to the environmental loading are calculated. Following the analysis sequence, the effects of the tunnel draft, spacing and initial inclination angle of the mooring lines on the fatigue damage under the specific environmental loadings are investigated.
Structural stability of floating platforms has long since been a crucial issue in the field of marine engineering. Excessive motions would not only deteriorate the operating conditions but also seriously impact the safety, service life, and production efficiency. In recent decades, several control devices have been proposed to reduce unwanted motions, and an attractive one is the tuned heave plate (THP). However, the THP system may reduce or even lose its effectiveness when it is mistuned due to the shift of dominant wave frequency. In the present study, a novel adaptive tuned heave plate (ATHP) is proposed based on inerter by adjusting its inertance, which allows to overcome the limitation of the conventional THP and realize adaptations to the dominant wave frequencies in real time. Specifically, the analytical model of a representative semisubmersible platform (SSP) equipped with an ATHP is created, and the equations of motion are formulated accordingly. Two optimization strategies (i.e., J1 and J2 optimizations) are developed to determine the optimum design parameters of ATHP. The control effectiveness of the optimized ATHP is then examined in the frequency domain by comparing to those without control and controlled by the conventional THP. Moreover, parametric analyses are systematically performed to evaluate the influences of the pre-specified frequency ratio, damping ratio, heave plate sizes, peak periods and wave heights on the performance of ATHP. Furthermore, a Simulink model is also developed to examine the control performance of ATHP in the time domain. It is demonstrated that the proposed ATHP could adaptively adjust the optimum inertance-to-mass ratio by tracking the dominant wave frequencies in real time, and the proposed system shows better control performance than the conventional THP.

Suction bucket foundation is installed with the differential pressure created by pumping water out of bucket. Bucket foundation has usually been utilized in mooring anchor for offshore platform or floating oil and gas production facilities in the open sea. After suction bucket foundation successfully was applied as the foundation for offshore wind turbines in Europe, it recently attracts much attention in Korea, too. To estimate the penetration resistance of the suction bucket foundation is one of the important matters that should be considered during its installation. This study carried out a series of model tests to investigate the penetration resistance of suction bucket foundation. And the mobilized soil strength factor was reviewed through comparing the experimental results by two installation ways (e.g., push-in-load and suction) and the results calculated by the conventional equation.
Moonpools are vertical wells in a floating body used onboard many types of vessels like Exploration and drilling vessels, Production barges, Cable-laying vessels, Rock dumping vessels, Research and offshore support vessels. Moonpool gives passage to underwater activities for different types of ships as per their mission requirements. It is observed that inside a moonpool considerable relative motions may occur, depending on shape, depth of the moonpool and on the frequency range of the waves to which the ship is exposed. The vessel responses are entirely different in zero and non-zero Froude number. Former situation is paid attention in this study as the mission requirement of the platform is to be in the particular location for long period of operation. It is well known that there are two modes of responses depending on the shape of the moonpool viz., piston mode for square shape and sloshing mode for rectangular shapes with different aspect ratios of opening like 1:1.5 and 1:2 ratios. Circular shaped moonpool is also tested for measuring the responses. The vessel moored using heavy lines are modelled and tested in the wave basin. The pretensions of the lines are varied by altering the touchdown points and the dynamic tensions on the lines are measured. The different modes of oscillations of water column are measured using wave gauge and the vessel response at a particular situation is determined. RAOs calculated for various situations provide better insight to the designer.
Spar platforms have several advantages for deploying wind turbines in offshore for depth beyond 120 m. The merit of spar platform is large range of topside payloads, favourable motions compared to other floating structures and minimum hull/deck interface. The main objective of this paper is to present the response analysis of the slack moored spar platform supporting 5MW wind turbine with bottom keel plates in regular and random waves, studied experimentally and numerically. A 1:100 scale model of the spar with sparD, sparCD and sparSD configuration was studied in the wave basin ($30{\times}30{\times}3m$) in Ocean engineering department in IIT Madras. In present study the effect of wind loading, blade dynamics and control, and tower elasticity are not considered. This paper presents the details of the studies carried out on a 16 m diameter and 100 m long spar buoy supporting a 90 m tall 5 MW wind turbine with 3600 kN weight of Nacelle and Rotor and 3500 kN weight of tower. The weight of the ballast and the draft of the spar are adjusted in such a way to keep the centre of gravity below the centre of buoyancy. The mooring lines are divided into four groups, each of which has four lines. The studies were carried out in regular and random waves. The operational significant wave height of 2.5 m and 10 s wave period and survival significant wave height of 6 m and 18 s wave period in 300 m water depth are considered. The wind speed corresponding to the operational wave height is about 22 knots and this wind speed is considered to be operating wind speed for turbines. The heave and surge accelerations at the top of spar platform were measured and are used for calculating the response. The geometric modeling of spar was carried out using Multisurf and this was directly exported to WAMIT for subsequent hydrodynamic and mooring system analysis. The numerical results were compared with experimental results and the comparison was found to be good. Parametric study was carried out to find out the effect of shape, size and spacing of keel plate and from the results obtained from present work ,it is recommended to use circular keel plate instead of square plate.
