Behavior of a steel bridge with large caisson foundations under earthquake and tsunami actions

  • The main focus of this study is to numerically investigate the influence of strong earthquake and tsunami-induced wave impact on the response and behavior of a cable-stayed steel bridge with large caisson foundations, by assuming that the earthquake and the tsunami come from the same fault motion. For this purpose, a series of numerical simulations were carried out. First of all, the tsunami-induced flow speed, direction and tsunami height were determined by conducting a two-dimensional (2D) tsunami propagation analysis in a large area, and then these parameters obtained from tsunami propagation analysis were employed in a detailed three-dimensional (3D) fluid analysis to obtain tsunami-induced wave impact force. Furthermore, a fiber model, which is commonly used in the seismic analysis of steel bridge structures, was adopted considering material and geometric nonlinearity. The residual stresses induced by the earthquake were applied into the numerical model during the following finite element analysis as the initial stress state, in which the acquired tsunami forces were input to a whole bridge system. Based on the analytical results, it can be seen that the foundation sliding was not observed although the caisson foundation came floating slightly, and the damage arising during the earthquake did not expand when the tsunami-induced wave impact is applied to the steel bridge. It is concluded that the influence of tsunami-induced wave force is relatively small for such steel bridge with large caisson foundations. Besides, a numerical procedure is proposed for quantitatively estimating the accumulative damage induced by the earthquake and the tsunami in the whole bridge system with large caisson foundations.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 강원도 산악지역에서 교량 설계 지침 개발에 있다. 2002년 태풍 루사, 2003년 매미, 2006년 에위니아에 이은 7월 집중호우로 강원도 산악지역에서는 큰 피해를 당한 바 있다. 이런 피해의 원인은 강원도 산악지역에 위치하는 하천의 지역적, 지형학적 조건을 고려하지 못한 부분적인 이유도 있는 것으로 판단된다. 교량피해의 대부분은 교각과 교대의 기초부분 세굴(침식) 때문에 발생되었다. 다른 이유로는 고사목, 나뭇가지 및 부유잡물 등이 교각과 상판에 걸려서 물의 흐름을 어렵게 만들거나 차단 시켜서 발생되었다. 수해현장의 피해 형태와 원인 등을 분석하여 이로부터 설계 지침을 제시하였다.

  • This paper is an experimental research of the design of a cell battery charger using switching methods. The developed charger in this paper can do both the equalizing current charge and floating charge. Also, it is easily transferable. Power MOS FET was used for the full bridge converter of the charger, and ZVS was applied for the switching method of the converter. Also, Customized IC was used for the control circuit in order to simplify ZVS mode. The setting current and floating current used for the charger were designed by using OP AMP. Based on the process provided by the current research, a sample converter with the power rating of 5KVA was developed and is field-testing to improve its validity and stability.

  • The thermocapillary flow in a differentially heated cylindrical liquid bridge under steady rotation of the hot disk is considered in the limit of zero capillary number. Steady flow states and their three-dimensional stability are calculated numerically. A linear stability analysis reveals that the most dangerous perturbations are oscillatory with azimuthal wavenumber m=1 or m=2 depending on the parameters.

  • It was estimated that the anti-vibration measures at the source location of railroad are the most active and effective ones. Among CWR(Continuously Welded Rail), elastic rail fastener, floating slab, ballast mat, under sleeper pad, etc. like these various kinds of measures in the source, under sleeper pad as an anti-vibration measure was constructed at the railroad track supporting structures in the Jeon-la Line. In this study, through the field measurement of vibration at the railroad track supporting structures and nearby the ground, the vibration reduction effect of under sleeper pad were evaluated by insertion loss. As a result, vibration reduction effects were 5.0∼12.5㏈ on the concrete slab of the bridge, 3.9∼7.5㏈ on the ground nearby the bridge respectively.

Lagrangian 입자추적모형을 이용한 부유성 오염물질의 혼합해석 (Mixing Analysis of Floating Pollutant Using Lagrangian Particle Tracking Model)

  • In this research, mixing behavior of the floating pollutant such as oil spill accidents was analyzed by studying the advection-diffusion of GPS floaters at water surface. The LPT (Lagrangian Particle Tracking) model of EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Computer Code) was used to simulate the motion of the GPS floater tracer. In the field experiment, 35 GPS floaters were injected at the Samun Bridge of Nakdong River. GPS floaters traveled to downstream about 700 m for 90 minutes. The field data by the GPS floater experiments were compared with the simulation in order to calibrate the parameter of LPT model. The turbulent diffusion coefficient of LPT model was determined as $K_H/hu^*$ = 0.17 from the scatter diagram. The arrival time of peak concentration and transverse diffusion from the simulation results were similar with the experiments from the concentration curves. Numerical experiments for anticipation of damage from floating pollutant were conducted in the same reach of the Nakdong River and the results show that the pollutant cloud transported to the left bank where the Hwawon pumping station is located. For this reason, it is suggested that the proper action should be needed to maintain the safety of the water withdrawal at the Hwawon pumping station.

The first Korean case with Floating-Harbor syndrome with a novel SRCAP mutation diagnosed by targeted exome sequencing

  • Floating-Harbor syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder associated with SRCAP mutation. To date, approximately 50 cases of Floating-Harbor syndrome have been reported, but none have been reported in Korea yet. Floating-Harbor syndrome is characterized by delayed bony maturation, unique facial features, and language impairment. Here, we present a 6-year-old boy with a triangular face, deep-set protruding eyes, low-set ears, wide nose with narrow nasal bridge, short philtrum, long thin lips, clinodactyly, and developmental delay that was transferred to our pediatric clinic for genetic evaluation. He showed progressive delay in the area of language and cognition-adaption as he grew. He had previously undergone chromosomal analysis at another hospital due to his language delay, but his karyotype was normal. We performed targeted exome sequencing, considering several syndromes with similar phenotypes. Library preparation was performed with the TruSight One sequencing panel, which enriches the sample for about 4,800 genes of clinical relevance. Massively parallel sequencing was conducted with NextSeq. An identified variant was confirmed by Sanger sequencing of the patient and his parents. Finally, the patient was confirmed as the first Korean case of Floating-Harbor syndrome with a novel SRCAP (Snf2 related CREBBP activator protein) mutation (c.7732dupT, p.Ser2578Phefs*6), resulting in early termination of the protein; it was not found in either of his healthy parents or a control population. To our knowledge, this is the first study to describe a boy with Floating-Harbor syndrome with a novel SRCAP mutation diagnosed by targeted exome sequencing in Korea.

퍼지 AHP를 이용한 수중터널의 재해위험도 분석 (Risk Assessment of Submerged Floating Tunnels based on Fuzzy AHP)

  • 대형 해양구조물의 건설과 운영에서 중요한 항목 중의 하나가 재해위험도를 분석하고 평가하는 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 수중터널의 건설과 운영 시에 발생할 수 있는 재해 위험요소를 도출하고 퍼지 AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) 방법으로 이러한 위험요소의 수준을 파악하고자 하였다. 재해 위험도로는 자연재해 위험도와 인적재해 위험도로 구분하고 이러한 위험도 항목들이 수중터널에 미치는 영향을 전문가 설문을 통하여 조사하였다. 조사된 전문가 설문결과 데이터를 퍼지 AHP 기법으로 분석하여 재해위험도를 각 위험요소별로 정량화하였다. 또한, 수중 터널과 교량, 해저터널, 침매터널의 재해위험도 수준을 분석하여 수중터널이 가지고 있는 고유의 재해위험도 수준을 평가하였다. 재해위험도에서는 쯔나미와 지진이 가장 위험도 인식수준이 높았고, 인적재해 위험도는 화재와 폭발의 위험도 인식이 높은 수준이었다. 또한, 수중터널은 침매터널에 비해서는 1.4배, 교량에 비해서는 3.2배 위험도 인식수준이 높은 것으로 조사되었다.

Motion characteristics along the shape of the activating body of a floating wave energy convertor

  • Wave energy generation systems can be divided into oscillating water chamber type, over topping device type and wave activating body type. The wave activating body type converts wave energy to kinetic energy, and the power generation amount increases as the motion of an activating body increases. In this paper, the wave energy convertor consists of a main body, which has an H-shape, and the activating body. These are connected by a bar-type bridge. By the incident wave, when the activating body moves with vertical motion this motion is consequently converted into rotational motion. The twisting moment and angular velocity at a shaft of convertor are calculated according to various conditions of the incident wave and the shape of the activating body. This can be used as a basic idea for determining the design of wave activating body type convertor.

  • The wheelhouse front glass of a Fore-Bridge-Ship (Ro-Ro Ship) was broken by the shipping of water in rough seas, and then the flooding of seawater into the wheelhouse caused the uncontrollable condition of the ship. The hull which was entered into the floating condition rolled severely, and the heavy rolling caused secondary damage such as the collapse of a lot of cargo. It was an incredible accident because the height of bow freeboard was about 2.5 times higher than the standard height of minimum bow freeboard regulated by the International Load Line Convention(1966). And it would be also difficult for navigators to imagine a great deal of seawater flooding into the wheelhouse because the front glass was positioned at about 20m height above the sea surface. In this paper, we carried out the evaluation for the safety navigation of the Fore-Bridge-Ship numerically against ship's speed and encountering angle to the wave in each sea state of rough sea, by using the integrated seakeeping performance index (ISPI) which is able to evaluate synthetically the safety operation of ships. And then the problem on the application of the past criteria proposed as the safety navigation of a merchant ship was clarified by inquiring the dangerousness of the shipping of water at her bow deck, which caused the breakage of the wheelhouse front glass.
