This study concentrates on the design of floater for 15kW-class wave energy converter that extracts the ocean energy by oscillating vertically along the wave motion. The floater connects to a arm structure that connects to a hydraulic cylinder, which drives a hydraulic generator. The study mainly focuses on the structural analysis of the floater. Previous studies have been conducted using a miniature model; however, this study focuses on the size selection of the floater for a full scale model. Static structural analysis is conducted using fine numerical grids. Due to the complexity of the whole model, it is analyzed as a separate component. There are several load cases for each floater size, and they are analyzed thoroughly for stress (von-mises, shear, and normal) and deformation. The initial design was conducted by scaling up from the miniature model of the previous study, and the final design has been redesigned by changing the thickness and internal support structure shape.
Ocean waves have huge amounts of energy, even larger than wind or solar, which can be extracted by some mechanical device. This can be done by creating a system of reacting forces, in which two or more bodies move relative to each other, while at least one body interacts with the waves. This moves the floater up and down. The floaters are connected to an arm structure, which are mounted on a fixed hull structure. Hence, the structure of the floater is very important. A static structural analysis with FSI (Fluid-Structure Interaction) analysis is conducted. To achieve the pressure load for the FSI analysis, the floater is simulated on a wave generator using rigid body motion. The structural analysis is done to examine the stresses on the whole system, and four types of flange and floater are optimized. The result shows that the structure of floater with wood support is the safest.

The sloshing of liquid inside an ocean floater is caused by disturbances due to waves. For the analysis of sloshing impact within the floater and that of waves on the floater, the coupled analysis method is used. The Stokes $5^{th}$ order non-linear wave theory equations were adapted for wave making. Furthermore, Navier-Stokes equation and Shear-Stress Transport (SST) turbulent model were used to Computational Fluid dynamics, where the ocean floater motions are considered the heave and the pitch motion. The results obtained confirms the mutual relationship between the rigid body motions and that of sloshing, where the sloshing behaviour within the floater is characterized by the wave effects on the floater.
Increasing numbers of floating offshore wind turbines are planned and designed these days due to their high potential in massive generation of clean energy from water depth deeper than 50 m. In the present study, a numerical prediction tool has been developed for the fully-coupled dynamic analysis of FOWTs in time domain including aero-blade-tower dynamics and control, mooring dynamics, and platform motions. In particular, the focus of the present study is paid to the dynamic coupling between the rotor and floater and the coupled case is compared against the uncoupled case so that their dynamic coupling effects can be identified. For this purpose, a mono-column mini TLP with 1.5MW turbine for 80m water depth is selected as an example. The time histories and spectra of the FOWT motions and accelerations as well as tether top-tensions are presented for the given collinear wind-wave condition. When compared with the uncoupled analysis, both standard deviations and maximum values of the floater-responses/tower-accelerations and tether tensions are appreciably increased as a result of the rotor-floater dynamic coupling, which may influence the overall design including fatigue-life estimation especially when larger blades are to be used.

The purpose of this study is to invent the preparation technique of the foam-floater used as a level gauge of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank under high pressure, which has not only closed pores but also has under 5 wt% changingrate in case of depositing 72 h in room-temperature LPG. In pressure-resistance and deposition experiment, the prepared foam-floaters with different sulfur (325 Mesh and 400 Mesh) and foaming agent (dinitrosopentamethylenetetramin; DPT and azodicarbonamide; AC) had a marginal difference in its weight changing-rate. However, the prepared floater with sulfur 400 Mesh and the foaming agent AC had smaller pores and higher closed pore-rate. Under $50kg_f/cm^3$ hydraulic pressure, the floater with medium thermal (MT) carbon showed a lower weight changing-rate than semi reinforcing furnace (SRF) carbon. Providing a post-treatment to the prepared floater, the hardness and the pressure-resistance of the inner pore-wall of floater were increased. Prepared floaters having a specific gravity below 0.30 were distorted and broken, and other floaters with a specific gravity above 0.35 were not useful as a floater because of the low buoyancy. Therefore, it was considered that the floaters with a specific gravity between 0.3~0.35 are the most useful as a floater under $50kg_f/cm^3$ pressure-resistance.

The characteristics of filter/adsorber granular activated carbon (F/A GAC) were investigated by measuring various parameters, which include surface area, pore volume, abrasion number, floater, and water-soluble ash. The correlation between parameters was also evaluated. Moreover, rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) was conducted for adsorption characteristics. Thirteen F/A GAC were tested, and the average values of abrasion number and water-soluble ash were 88.9 and 0.15%, respectively. F/A GAC with the larger external surface area and greater mesopore volume had the lower abrasion number, which indicated that it was worn out relatively easily. Water-soluble ash of coconut-based GAC (about 2.6%) was greater than that of coal-based GAC (less than 1%), and the pH of solution was increased with GAC, which had the higher water-soluble ash. On the other hand, floater of thirteen F/A GAC was divided as two groups, which one group had relatively higher floater (2.7~3.5%) and the other group had lower floater (approximately 0.5%). The results of RSSCT indicated that coconut-based GAC (i.e. relatively higher water-soluble ash) had less adsorption capacity. Moreover, adsorption capacity of coal-based GAC with larger surface area and greater mesopore volume was superior to others.

When a domestically manufactured floater is used in a general gasoline or LPG car, or a flowmeter is floated long time in the engine oil under above $150^{\circ}C$, the floater will be swelled or its organization will be slackened because weight and volume will be changed due to the osmosis of fuel. In this study, we conducted a research on a manufacturing technique of a foam-floater with the small changse in weight and volume, oil-resistance, and thermal resistance in the high temperature engine oil. When the prepared floater TROF II-3, where Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) as basic material of the floater was superseded by Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR), was floated for 100 h at the engine oil of high temperature ($150^{\circ}C$), the change rates of the weight and the volume were 2.90%, and 2.56%, respectively. These were less than the NBR (TROF I-3) case, where the change rates of the weight and the volume were 10.81% and 3.08%, respectively, Therefore, TROF II-3 was determined to be suitable as an engine-oil floater in high temperature because the change of weight and volume were small, the appearance, and the specific gravity of floater were maintained uniformly in the high temperature.

In the past, there were several researchers investigating waves generated by a small boat. Wave generated by a ship can be divided into two distinct systems of waves, such as transverse and diverging waves. It is necessary to understand the behavior of a ship in waves generated by a small boat near port in the view point of ship safety. In this study, the motion of moored floater in waves generated by a small boat near port is investigated. The model test is performed in waves in a square tank in Changwon National University (CWNU). IMU and optical-based system which uses the technique of recording and capturing attitude with respect time are used for measuring 6DOF motion of the moored floater. In addition, tension gauges are used to measure the tension of mooring lines. The effect of waves generated by a small boat on motion of the moored floater near port is investigated through performing the model test in various wave directions of virtually but reasonably assumed wave scenarios.
In this paper we present an error bound for cubic spline approximation of conic section curve. We compare it to the error bound proposed by Floater [1]. The error estimating function proposed in this paper is sharper than Floater's at the mid-point of parameter, which means the overall error bound is sharper than Floater's if the estimating function has the maximum at the midpoint.

We have developed the novel device that can extract energy from ocean waves utilizing the heaving motion of a floating mass. The major components of the energy converter are: a floater, a counterweight, a cable, a driving pulley, two idler pulleys, a ratchet, and a generator. The device generates power through the tension force in the cable and the weight difference between the floater and the counterweight. When the system is at static free condition, the tension in the cable is equal to the weight of the counterweight which is minimum. Therefore it is desirable to keep the counterweight lighter than the floater. However, experiments show that during the rise of the water level, the torque generated by weight of the counterweight is insufficient to rotate the driving pulley which causes the cable on the floater side to slack. The proposed application of the tension pulley rectifies these problems by preventing the cable from becoming slack when the water level rises. In this paper, the dynamics model is modified to incorporate the dynamics of the tension pulley. This has been achieved by first writing the dynamical equations for the tension pulley and the energy converter separately and combining them later. This paper investigates numerically the effect of the tension pulley on various physical quantities such as the cable tension, the floater displacement, and the floater velocity. Results obtained indicate that this application is successful in suppressing large fluctuations of the cable tension.
