  • The mechanical and electrical properties of the hot-pressed and annealed $\beta$-Sic-$TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as function of the liquid forming additives of $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_3$. Phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, and YAG($Al_{5}Y_{3}O_{12}$). The relative density and the mechanical properties of composites were increased with increasing $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_3$ contents because YAG of reaction between $Al_{2}O_3$ and $Y_{2}O_3$ was increased. The Flexural strength showed the highest value of 432.5MPa for composites added with l2wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_3$ additives at room temperature. Owing to crack deflection, crack bridging, phase transition and YAG of fracture toughness mechanism. the fracture toughness showed 7.1MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$. For composites added with l2wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_3$ additives at room temperature The electrical resistivity and the resistance temperature coefficient respectively showed the lowest of 6.0${\sim}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}$ cm and 3.1${\times}10^{-3}/^{\circ}C$ for composite added with l2wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_3$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) in the temperature range of 25$^{\circ}C$ to 700$^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper describes the application of discretized continuum-type optimality criteria (DCOC) and the development of optimum design program for the multispan partially prestressed concrete beams. The cost of construction as objective function which includes the costs of concrete, prestressing steel, non-prestressing steel and formwork is minimized. The design constraints include limits on the maximum deflection, flexural and shear strengths, in addition to ductility requirements, and upper and lower bounds on design variables as stipulated by the design Code. Based on Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions, the optimality criteria are explicitly derived in terms of the design variables-effective depth, eccentricity of prestressing steel and non-prestressing steel ratio. The prestressing profile is prescribed by parabolic functions. The self-weight of the structure is included in the equilibrium equation of the real system, as is the secondary effect resulting from the prestressing force. An iterative procedure and computer program for updating the design variables are developed. Two numerical examples of multispan PPC beams with rectangular cross-section are solved to show the applicability and efficiency of the DCOC-based technique.

  • In strength limit states design, it is assumed that after cracking, reinforcement carries all tension in the tension zone of reinforced concrete members. However, it can be seen the concrete between cracks will contribute to carrying a part of the tension stress in actual concrete members particularly at service load levels, this effect is referred as tension stiffening effect. In this study, tension stiffening models and high strength concrete beam flexural test results were verified through comparison. The relationship between moment-curvature and load-deflection was evaluated by result of tension stiffening model and test result values. The analysis results showed that ACI 318 and Owen & Damjanic generally shows good agreement.

  • Using the finite element analysis model presented in accompanying paper, parametric study was performed in this paper. Various parameters were considered such as the width of wheel loads-induced permanent plastic deformation, backfill, equivalent thickness and orthogonal characteristic of steel mats. The effects of these parameters were analyzed for vertical and rotational displacements, maximum moment and tensile stress. From the parametric studies, it is found that great vertical deflection and tensile stress above allowable flexural tensile strength are developed in steel mats by the wheel loads-induced permanent plastic deformation. Backfill or increasing the thickness of steel mats is a feasible solution on this problem.

  • This study has attempted to suggest a proper reinforcement method by strengthening unbonded post -tensioning through height of an anchorage hole, form of a saddle, and loading time point as parameters and evaluating the reinforcement method through a bending experiment. The result of this experiment indicated effects of reinforcement since the maximum strength ratio(the ratio of an experimental value to theoretical value) of SC composite beams before prestressed was 0.97 and after prestress were 1.00~1.21. As a result of analysis on displacement and strain, irrespective of height of an anchorage hole and loading time point, the D120-series specimen where an anchorage hole was installed on the neutral axis after reinforcement showed that its deflection continuously increased without sudden load reduction after maximum load and it stably behaved with relatively low strain of each part. In terms of reinforcement effects, the maximum strength of SCR-UD120 specimen prestressed after pre-loading was increased 1.72 times comparing to SC composite beams so SCR-UD120 specimen prestressed after pre-loading was shown to be the best.

  • This paper presents an investigation on the dynamic behavior of SRC columns with built-in cross-shaped steels under impact load. Seven 1/2 scaled SRC specimens were subjected to low-speed impact by a gravity drop hammer test system. Three main parameters, including the lateral impact height, the axial compression ratios and the stirrup spacing, were considered in the response analysis of the specimens. The failure mode, deformation, the absorbed energy of columns, as well as impact loads are discussed. The results are mainly characterized by bending-shear failure, meanwhile specimens can maintain an acceptable integrity. More than 33% of the input impact energy is dissipated, which demonstrates its excellent impact resistance. As the impact height increases, the flexural cracks and shear cracks observed on the surface of specimens were denser and wider. The recorded time-history of impact force and mid-span displacement confirmed the three stages of relative movement between the hammer and the column. Additionally, the displacements had a notable delay compared to the rapid changes observed in the measured impact load. The deflection of the mid-span did not exceed 5.90mm while the impact load reached peak value. The impact resistance of the specimen can be improved by proper design for stirrup ratios and increasing the axial load. However, the cracking and spalling of the concrete cover at the impact point was obvious with the increasing in stiffness.
