The wave interaction with flexible membrane such as PVC and fabrics is studied to prove its applicability to portable breakwaters. To obtain the wave exciting force acting on flexible membrane, eigen-function expansion method is employed. The effect of flexible is involved in body boundary condition in which x-directional displacement of membrane is obtained by solving the linear membrane equation. Displacement of membrane is assumed to be small compared to wavelength, therefore the tensile force of membrane remains constant. As the numerical examples, transmission and reflection coefficients according to the change of tensile forces are investigated. The hydrodynamic force on membrane, the dynamic tension in the mooring lines and the vertical displacement profile of membrane are also calculated. It is suggested that the flexible membrane can be used to engineering material for the future coastal/ocean applications.

The wave interaction with flexible membrane such as PVC and PU fabrics is studied to prove its applicability to portable breakwaters. To analyze the wave deformation due to the flexible membrane. eigen-function expansion method is employed. The fluid domain is seperated into two regions. The velocity potential in each regions and the deformation of membrane are coupled by the body boundary conditions. Herein the deformation of membrane is obtained by solving the membrane equation. As a numerical example, transmission and reflection coefficients according to the change of several design parameters such as tensile force. mooring line stiffness and membrane height are investigated. It is found that the efficiency of flexible membrane breakwater is significantly affected by these design parameters. The angle of incident wave is an important role to the performance of breakwater. Finally we conclude that flexible membrane can be used to engineering material for the future breakwaters.

In the present paper, the hydrodynamic properties of a Rahmen-type, flexible, porous breakwater interacting with obliquely or normal- incident small amplitude waves are numerically investigated. This system is composed of dual vertical porous membranes, hinged at the side edges of a submerged horizontal membrane. The dual vertical membranes are extended downward and hinged at seabed. The effects of permeability, Rahmen-type membrane breakwater geometry, pre-tensions on membranes, relative dimensionless wave number, and incident wave headings are thoroughly examined.

In the study, aeroelastic behaviors and aerodynamic performances of flexible airfoil in low Reynolds number environment are evaluated. To facilitate the present study, flexible airfoil in modeled through attaching massless membrane in portion of the upper CLARK-Y airfoil surface, which is often proposed low Reynolds number airfoil. The behavior of membrane in governed by aerodynamic forces and membrane equilibrium equation. Nondimensional parameter deducted by nondimensionalizing the membrane equilibrium equation, which represents the interaction between fluid and membrane has a great influence on membrane aeroelastic behavior. Changing the starting point of the membrane is conducted on aerodynamic performances. As a result, the value of nondimensional parameter should almost linearly increase according to moving the starting point of the membrane surface toward the trailing edge.

A numerical study on the hydrodynamic properties of a floating flexible breakwater consisting of triple vertical porous membrane structures attached to a floating rigid pontoon restrained by moorings is carried out in the context of two-dimensional linear wave-flexible body interaction theory. The tensions in the triple membranes are achieved by hanging a clump weight from its lower ends. The clump weight is also restrained properly by moorings. The dynamic behavior of the breakwater was described through an appropriate Green function, and the fluid multi-domains are incorporated into the boundary integral equation. Numerical results are presented which illustrate the effects of the various wave and structural parameters on the efficiency of the breakwater as a barrier to wave action. It is found that the wave reflection and transmission properties of the structures depends strongly on the membrane length taking major fraction of water column, the magnitude of tensions on membrane achieving by the clump weight, proper mooring types and stiffness, the permeability on the membrane dissipating wave energy.

In this work, we demonstrate a facile process to prepare an electrolyte membrane for the supercapacitor based on a graft copolymer consisting of starch and poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN). The graft copolymer (starch-g-PAN) was synthesized via free radical polymerization initiated by ceric ions. The starch-g-PAN was dissolved in ionic liquid, i.e. 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (EMIM DCA) without any organic solvents at room temperature. The gelation of polymer electrolyte membranes occurred by applying high temperature, i.e. $100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The resultant electrolyte membrane was flexible and thus applied to flexible solid supercapacitors. The performance of the supercapacitor based on starch-g-PAN graft copolymer electrolyte reached 21 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g. The cell also showed high cyclic stability with 86% of retention rate within 10,000 cycles. The preparation of starch-g-PAN based polymer electrolyte membrane provides opportunities for facile fabrication of flexible solid supercapacitors with good performance.
The focus of this paper is on the numerical investigation of obliquely incident wav interactions with a system composed of fully submerged and floating dual buoy/vertical-flexible-membrane breakwaters placed in parallel with spacing between two systems. The fully submerged two systems allow surface and bottom gaps to enable wave transmission over and under the system. The problem is formulated based on the two-dimensional multi-domain hydro-elastic linear wave-body interaction theory. The hydrodynamic interaction of oblique incident waves with the combination of the rigid and flexible bodies was solved by the distribution of the simple sources (modified Bessel function of the second kind) that satisfy the Helmholz governing equation in fluid domains. A boundary element program for three fluid domains based on a discrete membrane dynamic model and simple source distribution method is developed. Using this developed computer program, the performance of various dual systems varying buoy radiuses and drafts, membrane lengths, gaps, spacing, mooring-lines stiffness, mooring types, water depth, and wave characteristics is thoroughly examined. It is found that the fully submerged and floating dual buoy/membrane breakwaters can, if it is properly tuned to the coming waves, have good performances in reflecting the obliquely incident waves over a wide range of wave frequency and headings.

The interaction of oblique monochromatic incident waves with a horizontal flexible membrane is investigated in the context of two-dimensional linear hydro-elastic theory. First, analytic diffraction and radiation solutions for a submerged impermeable horizontal membrane are obtained. Second, the theoretical prediction was compared with a series of experiments conducted in a two-dimensional wave tank at Texas A&M University. The measured reflection and transmission coefficients reasonably follow the trend of predicted values. Using the developed computer program, the performance of surface-mounted or submerged horizontal membrane wave barriers is tested with various system parameters and wave characteristics. It is found that the properly designed horizontal flexible membrane can be an effective wave barrier and its efficiency can be further improved using a porous material.
In this study, the optimum design conditions of a polymer electrolyte membrane for application to a flexible electrochromic device (ECD) were tried to be derived. Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) with excellent adhesive property and transparency was selected as the base polymer for the preparation of the electrolyte membrane, and adipate-based polymer was used as the plasticizer. As a result, it was confirmed that the most influential factors on the ECD performance were the ionic conductivity and permeability of the electrolyte membrane. In addition, it was found that the factor has a close relationship with the dissociation property of the lithium salt. Overall, the optimal ECD performance was achieved when LiTFSI salt having a large anion size among various lithium salts was dissolved in a content of about 25 wt.%.

The interaction of monochromatic incident waves with a submerged horizontal porous membrane is investigated in the context of two-dimensional linear hydro-elastic theory. It is assumed that the membrane is made of material with very fine pores so that the normal velocity of the fluid passing through the porous membrane is linearly proportional to the pressure difference between two sides of the membrane (e.g. Darcy's law). Using the Eigen-function expansion method, the wave-blocking performance of a submerged horizontal porous membrane is tested with various membrane tensions, porosities, lengths, and submerged depths. It is found that an optimal combination of design parameters exists for given water depth and wave characteristics.
