Soil-structure interaction effects on seismic behavior of a hyperbolic cooling tower using three-parameter Vlasov foundation model

  • The paper focuses on the seismic responses of a hyperbolic cooling tower resting on soil foundation represented by the three-parameter Vlasov elastic soil model. The three-parameter soil model eliminates the necessity of field testing to determine soil parameters such as reaction modulus and shear parameter. These parameters are calculated using an iterative procedure depending on the soil surface vertical deformation profile in the model. The soil and tower system are modeled in SAP2000 structural analysis program using a computing tool coded in MATLAB. The tool provides a two-way data transfer between SAP2000 and MATLAB with the help of Open Application Programming Interface (OAPI) feature of SAP2000. The response spectrum analyses of the tower system with circular V-shaped supporting columns and annular raft foundation on elastic soil are conducted thanks to the coded tool. The shell and column forces and displacements are presented for different soil conditions and fixed raft base condition to investigate the effects of soil-structure interaction. Numerical results indicate that the flexibility of soil foundation leads to an increase in displacements but a decrease in shell membrane and column forces. Therefore, it can be stated that the consideration of soil-structure interaction in the seismic response analysis of the cooling tower system provides an economical design process.

The Effects of the Mounted Method of Frame of a Large Truck on Handling Performance (대형트럭 프레임의 결합방법이 조종성능에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper develops a computer model of a cabover type large truck for estimating the effects of the mounted method of frame on handling performance. The computer model considers two mounted methods of frame; flange mounted and web mounted. Frame is modeled by finite elements using MSC/NASTRAN in order to consider the flexibility of frame. The reliability of the developed computer model is verified by comparing the actual vehicle test results with the simulation results. The actual vehicle test is performed in a double lane change course, and lateral acceleration, yaw rate, and roll angle are measured. To estimate the effects of the mounted method of frame on handling performance, simulations are performed with the flange mounted and web mounted frame. Simulation results show that the web mounted frame's variations of roll angle, lateral acceleration, and yaw rate are larger than the flange mounted frame's variations, especially in the high test velocity and the second part of the double lane course. Also, simulation results show that the web mounted frame's tendencies of roll angle, lateral acceleration, and yaw rate advance the flange mounted frame's tendencies, especially in the high test velocity and the second part of the double lane course.

Design of the Interspinous Process Fixator Using Biomechanical Analysis for the Treament of Degenerative Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (퇴행성 요추부 척추관 협착증 치료를 위한 극돌기간 고정기구의 설계 및 생체역학적 분석)

  • Degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis(DLSS) is a disease inducing low back pain, leg pain, convulsion, numbness, and neurogenic claudication from compression of nerve root. Intervertebra fixation was reported to increase the degenerative of neighbor region after treatment. Recently, a new surgical technique of inserting a fixator between interspinous processes has been introduced. The purpose of this study is to design of the interspinous process fixator with flexibility to complement the trouble of using fixator in DLSS. This study evaluated the existing fixator through the mechanical test and modified fixators using the finite element analysis(FEA). Displacement, stiffness and Von-Mises stress were found to have similar values to those obtained from the mechanical test and the FEA in the biomechanical loading condition. Effects of variation in length and thickness were investigated to design an optimal fixator.

The purpose of this study is to design the interspinous process fixator with flexibility to complement the trouble of using fixator in DLSS. This study evaluated the existing fixator through the mechanical test and modified it using the finite element analysis (FEA). The evaluation was based on the displacement, stiffness and von-Mises stress obtained from the mechanical test and calculated from the FEA in the biomechanical loading condition. Effects of variation in length and thickness were investigated to design an optimal fixator. Three prototypes were manufactured using FEA results. Mechanical tests under the biomechanical loading condition were performed to select the best one from these three. The selected fixator increased flexiblity by 32.9%.

Effects of a drawbar and a rotor in dynamic characteristics of a high-speed spindle (드로우바와 로터가 고속주축계의 동적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The spindle system with a built-in motor can be used to simplify the structure of machine tools, to improve the machining flexibility of machine tools, and to perform the high speed machining. For more quantitative analysis of a built-in motor's dynamic characteristics, that of tile mass and stillness effects are considered. And the drawbar in the spindle can be in various condition according to supporting stiffness between drawbar and shaft. Therefore, in this paper following items are performed and analyzed : 1. Modal characteristics of the spindle. 2. Analysis of rotor's mass and stiffness effects. 3. Modal characteristics of the spindle including drawbar, rotor and tool. The results show enough stiff supports must be provided between shaft and drawbar to prevent occurring drawbar vibration lower than the natural frequency of 1st bending mode of the spindle, and considering the mass and stiffness of built-in motor's rotor is important thing to derive more accurate results.

  • This paper presents analysis of dynamic characteristics of a high-speed milling spindle with a drawbar and a built-in motor. The spindle system with a built-in motor can be used to simplify the structure of machine tools, to improve the machining flexibility of machine tools, and to perform the high speed machining. In this system the shaft is usually assumed as a rigid rotor. In this paper, the modal characteristics of drawbar in high-speed milling spindle system due to supporting stiffness between drawbar and shaft and considering the mass and stiffness effects of the built-in motor's rotor are analyzed by numerical method. The result shows enough stiff supports must be provided between shaft and drawbar to prevent occurring drawbar vibration lower than the natural frequency of 1st bending mode of spindle. And considering the mass and stiffness of built-in motor's rotor is important thing to derive more accurate results.

  • This paper evaluates dynamic performance of a cab over type large-sized truck for estimating the effects of frame's torsional characteristics using a computer model. The computer model considers two mounting methods of frame, flange mounting and web mounting. Frame is modeled by finite elements using MSC/NASTRAN In order to consider the flexibility of frame. The torsional test of the frame is conducted In order to validate the modeled finite element model. A load cell is used to measure the load applied to the frame. An angle sensor is used to measure the torsional angle. An actuator is used to apply a load to the frame. To estimate the effects of frame's torsional characteristics on dynamic performance, simulations are performed with the flange mounting and web mounting frame. Simulation results show that the web mounting frame's variations of roll angle, lateral acceleration, and yaw rate are larger than the flange mounting frame's variations, especially in the high velocity and the second part of the double lane course.

  • Machining performance is often limited by chatter vibration at the tool-workpiece interface. Chatter vibration is a type of machining self-excited vibration which originated from the variation in cutting forces and the flexibility of the machine tool structure. Cutting tooling method is one of major factor to chatter vibration in turning process. Even though lots of cutting tooling methods are developed and used in machining process, precise analysis of cutting tooling effect in view of chatter vibration behavior. This study presents numerical and experimental approaches to verify and effects of various cutting tooling geometry and clamping method on the onset of chatter vibration. Acquired knowledge from this study will apply the optimal geometry design of cutting tooling and adjusting of machining process.

Control Performance of Friction Dampers Using Flexural Behavior of RC Shear Wall System (전단벽식 구조의 휨거동을 이용한 마찰감쇠기의 제어성능)

  • High-rise apartments of shear wall system are governed by flexural behavior like a cantilever beam. Installation of the damper-brace system in a structure governed by flexural behavior is not suitable. Because of relatively high lateral stiffness of the shear wall, a load is not concentrate on the brace and the brace cannot perform a role as a damping device. In this paper, a friction damper applying flexibility of shear wall is proposed in order to reduce the deformation of a structure. To evaluate performance of the proposed friction damper, nonlinear time history analysis is executed by SeismoStruct analysis program and MVLEM(multi vertical linear element model) be used for simulating flexural behavior of the shear wall. It is found that control performance of the proposed friction damper is superior to one of a coupled wall with rigid beam. In conclusion, this study verified that the optimal control performance of the proposed friction damper is equal to 45 % of the maximum shear force inducing in middle-floor beam with rigid beam.

Development of GRld-eased Soil MOsture Routing Model (GRISMORM) Applied to Bocheongchun Watershed (격자기반의 토양수분추적표형 개발 : 보청천 유역 사례연구)

  • A GRId-based Soil MOsture Routing Model(GRISMORM) which predicts temporal variation and spatial distribution of water balance on a daily time step for each grid element of the watershed was developed. The model was programmed by C-language which aims for high flexibility to any kind of GIS softwares. The model uses ASCII-formatted map data supported by the irregular gridded map of the GRASS(Geographic Resources Analysis Support System)-GIS and generates daily or monthly spatial distribution map of water balance components within the watershed. The model was applied to Ipyunggyo watershed(75.6$km^2$) ; the part of Bocheongchun watershed. Predicted streamflows resulting from two years(95 and 96) daily data were compared with those observed at the watershed outlet. The results of temporal variation and spatial distribution of soil moisture are also presented by using GRASS.
