  • The sub-resonance modes can be easily excited by the assembling tolerance in the asymmetric type optical pick-up actuators, compared with the symmetric type. In this paper, we propose the novel method for reducing the vibration due to the sub-resonance modes whose amplitude can be decreased by adding the damper and increasing the flexibility of holder PCB. Using the finite element method, the change of mode shapes is investigated as the shape of holder PCB is modified. Experimental results support that the propopsed method reduces remarkably the vibration of sub-resonance modes of the optical pick-up actuator.

  • This paper is concerned with the forced flexural vibration analysis of hard disk drive (HDD) spindle systems with multiple thin disks, supported by two ball bearings based on the finite element model. This is the extension of the previous work which analytically modeled every system component taking into account its structural flexibility and also the centrifugal stiffening effect especially for the disks. Among the end results, the forced time response is expectedly useful for the vibration control of the spindle itself or the position servo control of the magnetic head. On the other hand, the steady state responses such as the frequency response function and the unbalance response are useful for system identification. Futhermore, through a coordinate transformation the equations of motion is also derived with respect to the inertial frame for convenient analyses of certain classes.

  • Eddy current induction is used in a wide range of electronic devices, for example in detection sensors. Due to the advances in computer hardware and software, the need for 3D computation and system comprehension is a requirement to develop and optimize such devices nowadays. Pure theoretical models are mostly limited to special cases. On the other hand, the classical use of commercial Finite Element (FE) electromagnetic 3D models is not computationally efficient and lacks modeling flexibility or robustness. The proposed approach focuses on: (1) implementing theoretical formulations in 3D (FE) model of a detection device as well as (2) an automatic Volumetric Estimation Method (VEM) developed to selectively model the target finite elements. Due to these two approaches, this model is suitable for parametric studies and optimization of the number, location, shape, and size of PCB receivers in order to get the desired target discrimination information preserving high accuracy with tenfold reduction in computation time compared to commercial FE software.

  • Optical fibre sensors have shown a potential to serve real time health monitoring of the structures. They can be easily embedded or attached to the structures and are not affected by the electro-magnetic field. Furthermore, they have the flexibility of the sensor size and very highly sensitive. In this study, we conducted several laboratory and field tests using a novel optical sensor based on Brillouin scattering. One of the advantages of this technique is that the bare fibre itself acts as sensing element without any special fibre processing or preparation. Test results have shown that BOTDR can be a great solution for sensor systems of Civil Engineering Smart Structures.

  • The wavelength converter is considered to be a key element of future dense WDM optical networks. It enables wavelength reuse and resolves contention problem. Moreover, the tunability of the wavelength converter enhance the flexibility of network systems by facilitating reconfigurable dynamic wavelength routing. In order to achieve optically tunable wavelength conversion, we recently proposed and experimentally demonstrated wavelength conversion and tuning based on cascaded sum and difference frequency generation in a Ti:PPLN channel waveguide. • Elastomeric bearings are frequently used as a means to isolate structural systems from earthquake loadings. The combination of rubber layers and reinforcing steel shims makes the bearings stiff axially but soft laterally The shear flexibility of these short columns can lead to relatively low buckling loads which may be further reduced when high shear strains are simultaneously imposed. The area reduction formula has been proposed to account for the reduction in buckling load due to shear. The result obtained from the formula is presumed to be conservative but the degree of conservatism is unknown. This paper describes a numerical study which aims at determining the effect of high shear strain on the critical load of rubber bearings. The results from the finite element analysis which accounts for both the material and geometric non-linearities are compared against the theoretical results in order to examine the validity of the theoretical formulas.

  • A plate on the elastic half-space may generally be analyzed by the finite element method. However, there are some difficulties to obtain the flexibility matrix of the foundation based on the Boussinesq's theory. In this study, an efficient numerical procedure which uses the analysis results of the vertical displacements due to the uniformly distributed loading in a circular area is presented. Some numerical examples represent better results than those of numerical integration technique or subsection method especially in the case of irregular mesh pattern.

  • Friction factor and two-phase flow frictional multiplier for a CANFLEX bundle are newly developed and presented in this paper. CANFLEX as a 43-element fuel bundle has been developed jointly by AECL/KAERI to provide greater operational flexibility for CANDU reactor operators and designers. Friction factor and two-phase flow frictional multiplier have been developed by using the experimental data of pressure drops obtained from two series of Freon-l34a (R-134a) CHF tests with a string of simulated CANFLEX bundles in a single phase and a two-phase flow conditions. The friction factor for a CANFLRX bundle is found to be about 20 % higher than that of Blasius for a smooth circular pipe. The pressure drop predicted by using the new correlations of friction factor and two-phase frictional multiplier are well agreed with the experimental pressure drop data of CANFLEX bundle within ${\pm}\;5\;%$ error.

  • A chevron rubber spring is used in primary suspension system for rail vehicle. The chevron spring has function which support the load carried and reduce vibration and noise in operation of rail vehicle. The computer simulation using the non-linear finite element analysis program MARC executed to predict and evaluate the load capacity and stiffness for tile chevron spring. The appropriate shape and material properties are proposed to adjust the required characteristics of chevron spring in the three modes of flexibility. Also, several samples of chevron spring are manufactured and experimented. It is shown that the predicted values agree well tile results obtained from experiments.
