  • Cyanogenic glycosides are secondary plant metabolites that are known as plant defense chemicals. They are found in cassava, bamboo, flax, and other plants. In this paper, the role of cyanogenic glycosides, their characteristics, and their interactions with insects are discussed. Previous and current research in our laboratory found that several natural and synthetic cyanohydrins were effective against stored-product insects as fumigants. Due to their insecticidal activity to insects, cyanohydrins can be used as an alternative fumigant and also as soil fumigants. Risk assessment, however, should be done to account for possible environmental problems, non-target wildlife effects, and human health effects.

  • In this study, an investigation was performed on the mechanical properties of the natural-fiber-composite structure. The specimen was manufactured using the Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) method. The flax-fiber materials were adopted for the natural fiber composite, and vinyl-ester resin was also adopted. After a manufactured specimen was obtained, a mechanical test was carried out. The mechanical properties of the experiment results were compared with those of the natural-composite data cited from a number of other references.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the environmental applicability of nonwovens by using special composition. Polypropylene spunbonded and needle punched nonwovens which have the lower cost than polyester nonwovens were used as the raw materials to manufacture the natural fiber used nonwoven geotextiles. These geotextiles were made by use of the thermal bonding methods and composed of jute(or flax)/polypropylene staple fiber blends were obtained in consideration of environmental application. Finally, the engineering properties of natural fiber used nonwoven geotextiles were investigated as eco-friendly materials.

  • The impact response of the human brain has been determined by three-dimensional finite element modeling. The model includes a layered shell closely representing the cranial bones with the interior contents occupied by an incompressible contimuum to simulate the brain. Flax and tentorium modeled with 4 node membrane element were also incorporated. The computed pressure-time histories at 4 locations within the brain element compared quite favorably with previously published experimental data from cadaver experiments. A parametric study was subsequently conducted to identify the model response when the impact were varied.

  • In this study, a optimal design on the hood automotive using eco-friendly natural fiber composites is performed. The hood of an automobile is determined by dividing the Inner panel shape through optimization phase to outer panel and inner panel. It was performed to optimize the size of the thickness of the inner panel and the outer panel by applying a flax/epoxy composite materials. The optimized shape was evaluated for weight-lightening, stability and the pedestrian collision safety. Through the resin flow analysis are confirmed to molding possibility judgment of product.

  • Series of experiments were conducted to determine lethal does of X-ray and Neutron on Toxoplasma gondii. strain RH and IRI. As well morphological changes of Toxoplasma gondii irradiated or not were compared by use of electron microscope. The pathogenicity test of the irradiated and nonirradiated Toxoplasma gondii was made in mice guinea-pigs, rabbits and pigs: The letahl dose of X-ray and Neutron on RH and IRI strain and the growth rate between two strains after irradiation were shown little differences. Morphological changes were not observed until 18th passage was made. After then, the growth rate was decreased apparently, and atrophied forms were frequently observed in electron microscope. Survival time of animals inoculated with irradiated strain was longer than that of animals giving non-irradiated strain, and Toxoplasma gondii were isolated from all the dead animals. But it is of interest that pigs survived after injection of Toxoplasma gondii remained health and much attempts were failed toisolate Toxplasma gondii remained health and much attempts were slaughtered them. Animals were succumbed after injection of Toxoplasma gondii without any relationship with serum titers. (HA antibody).

  • Fabric touch was evaluated psychophysically in order to determine the relationship between mechanical properties and subjective sensation. For subjective touch sensation, eight aspects such as hardness, smoothness, coarseness, coolness, pliability, crispness, heaviness and thickness were evaluated using free modulus magnitude estimation (FEME) technique. KES-FB was used to measure the mechanical properties of fabrics. Woolen fabric with the highest values of WC and weight was evaluated as the coarsest, heaviest and thickest. While silk crepe do chine with the lowest LT, G, 2HG, thickness and weight was rated as smoother and more pliable than any other fabrics. And flax with the highest values of LT and SMD was evaluated as hard, cool and crisp. Fabric touch and satisfaction were predicted well from the mechanical properties, especially from SMD, by regression analysis. Satisfaction for touch increased as smoothness increased.

  • Plant species have shown the capability to absorb U into the biomass. Norman(l952) even suggested that uranyl ion acts as an accessory microelement in growth of Lemna and flax roots. The plants, termed metal hyperaccumulators, can extract and accumulate more than 1000-10,000mg heavy metal per kilogram of dry weight of plants (0.1-1%). The most vital main factors influencing the ability and efficiency of phytoremediation is the ability of the plant to uptake the metals from soil before the accumulation mechanism happens in the plant tissue.
