The purpose of this paper is to investigate economic feasibility of creating artificial tidal flats using cost-benefit analyses. We assumed that the cost factors are associated with designing, construction and monitoring, and the benefit factors are associated with fisheries production, habitation, prevention of disasters, water purification, aesthetic value and existence value. First, for analyzing economic feasibility, the scenario suggests that a design can be made in a year, construction can be completed in three years and monitoring must be made for 20 years. Assuming the discount rate of 7.5%, economic feasibility analyses showed that B/C was 2.26 and IRR was 14.50. This study indicated there is economic validity of implementing creation of artificial tidal flat. In addition, we carried out a sensitivity analysis at the change of discount rate and restoration rate. The result of sensitivity analysis clearly showed that economic validity is low when discount rate is over 15%, and changes in restoration rate did not significantly effect on the economic validity.

This paper described the results of the characteristics of the near-bottom flow and field analysis of the tidal flats sediment. It was the aim of this paper to grasp current flow of tidal flat's environment and influence factor for environmental change forecast of tidal flats. Field measurement of water velocity, water elevation, bed materials test, and temperature distribution of tidal flat were conducted. Thereafter, current flow, turbidity and temperature distribution of tidal flat sediment have been discussed. The field research results showed that the fluctuating velocity near the seabed before and after its appearance at low tide was strongly affected by the wind wave. The resuspension of the sea-bottom sediment took place with great intensity before and after the appearance of the seabed at low tide. Both the sea water level and the weather condition were a significant influential factors. Such as, temperature and turbidity just on the surface and the shallow layer of seabed sediments were varied largely with time and weather conditions, but that its deeper layers was almost constant. Temperature on the seabed sediments was strongly influenced by irradiance and water depth. The temperature variation of the tidal flat and the variation characteristics of the current flow and turbidity depend greatly on the inhabiting environment of the tidal flat benthic organism.
It is difficult to classify tidal flat surface that is composed of a mixture of mud, sand, water and microphytobenthos. We used a Linear Spectral Unmixing (LSU) method for effectively classifying the tidal flat surface characteristics within a pixel. This study aims at 1) detecting algal mat using LSU in the Saemangeum tidal flats, 2) determining a suitable end-member selection method in tidal flats, and 3) find out a habitual characteristics of algal mat. Two types of end-member were built; one is a reference end-member derived from field spectrometer measurements and the other image end-member. A field spectrometer was used to measure spectral reflectance, and a spectral library was accomplished by shape difference of spectra, r.m.s. difference of spectra, continuum removal and Mann-Whitney U-test. Reference end-members were extracted from the spectral library. Image end-members were obtained by applying Principle Component Analysis (PCA) to an image. The LSU method was effective to detect microphytobenthos, and successfully classified the intertidal zone into algal mat, sediment, and water body components. The reference end-member was slightly more effective than the image end-member for the classification. Fine grained upper tidal flat is generally considered as a rich habitat for algal mat. We also identified unusual microphytobenthos that inhabited coarse grained lower tidal flats.
Tidal flats are well developed in and around the Yellow Sea of Northeast Asia, and benthic diatoms are the most important primary producers in corresponding habitats. In the present study, the taxonomy and distribution of small negligible diatom species from Northeast Asian tidal flats are investigated for better understanding of the diversity of Korean marine benthic diatoms. The presence of Plagiogrammopsis minima and Diploneis aestuarii, which may have been ignored and/or misidentified due to their small size, were identified by both means of light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Plagiogrammopsis minima has never been reported from Korea before the present study, while Diploneis aestuarii was only once mentioned without any photographic information. Accordingly, we provide the morphological characteristics of the two species in detail with LM and SEM observation. Information on the regional distribution of the two species is also provided. Results of the present study contribute to the better understanding of the biodiversity of the Korean marine benthic diatoms.

A new grinding wheel was developed for the high performance grinding of difficult-to-grinding materials. The grinding performance of the newly developed wheel including grinding forces, grinding ratio, and surface roughness of ground surface was evaluated through experiments. Experimental results show that the performance of the newly developed wheel is superior to the conventional alumina wheel and comparable to the Sol-gel wheel. An experimental investigation on the wear of alumina grinding wheel was also carried out. The experiments consist of the measurements of fracture strength of the abrasive grains, grinding force, and the area of wear flats of grinding wheels. Microscopic examination of abrasive grains was executed to observe the progress of wheel wear. The results indicate that the 32A grain, which has relatively lower fracture strength, wears out faster than 5SS and 5SG. The wheel wear occurs much faster in wet grinding than in dry grinding. It has also been found that the grinding forces increase logarithmically with increasing wear flats.

In this study, sediment cores from unvegetated tidal flats in the Hampyeong Bay (west coastal wetland) and Dongdae Bay (south coastal wetland) were sampled, the blue carbon stock in the sediments was calculated, and the characteristics of the blue carbon stock were analyzed based on particle size of the sediments. The sediments in the Hampyeong Bay tidal flat had large particle size and low mud content, and the Dongdae bay tidal flat had small particle size and high mud content. The organic carbon content and blue carbon stock in the sediments were higher in the Dongdae tidal flat than in the Hampyeong Bay tidal flat. As a result of the regression function, in both the Hampyeong Bay and Dongdae Bay tidal flats, the sediments had the smaller particle size and higher mud contents the higher the organic carbon content and blue carbon stock. The sediments with smaller particle size had the larger specific surface area, so were feasible to adsorb and store more organic matters.
The distributional pattern of benthic diatoms in tidal flats of Hampyeong Bay, Korea, was studied from January to October in 2009. As benthic diatoms of Hampyeong Bay tidal flats, 45 species were identified, and the most dominant species was Paralia sulcata. The most diverse flora was observed at Gaip and Songseok sites in April with 22 species, and the least at Hyeonhwa site in January. The ranges of chlorophyll-a concentration in tidal flats were 21.2~31.8 mg$m^{-2}$ at Hyeonhwa site, 23.6~35.4 mg $m^{-2}$ at Gaip site, and 24.2~34.3 mg $m^{-2}$ at Songseok site. The concentrations of pheopigment ranged between 25.3 and 45.2 mg$m^{-2}$. The standing crops of benthic diatoms showed highest density in April and lowest in January, February, and October. The cell volumes of benthic diatoms were highest in April. The taxa and biomass of benthic diatoms showed correlations with temperature. On temperature variables, the benthic diatoms showed optimal occurrences at the range of $14{\sim}17^{\circ}C$.

In Japan, the vacancy rates of office buildings have been at high in big cities since 1992. This problem is especially acute in Tokyo, where it is estimated that over 2.27 million square meters of office floor area will be oversupplied in 2003: big urban redevelopment projects will be completed in 2003. Under these circumstances, International Cooperative Research and Development on Sustainable Urban Management by Conversion of Buildings, called “SUMCOB”, has been carried out. This research aims to regenerate urban areas by converting redundant offices into flats, although instances of conversion are still very few in Japan. This paper introduces part of current results by SUMCOB, and discusses legal problems with conversion and basic capacity of vacant offices in Tokyo. It has been confirmed that there are no constraints concerned with Real Estate Registration Law (although it requires the change of the registration after conversion). and City Planning Law. However, some criteria are incompatible with Building Standard Law and Fire Service Law if the use of the building is changed from offices to flats. Typical incompatibility between offices and flats is lightening. If the buildings do not satisfy criteria for flats, the cost of renovation works for conversion will increase. To examine the basic capacity of vacant office buildings for conversion, field surveys in Tokyo have carried out at three areas: Kodenmacho (Chuo-ku), Toranomon (Minato-ku), and Iwamonocho (Chiyoda-ku). They are typical office areas that are included in center core of Tokyo. In Chuo-ku, the oldest commercial area in Tokyo, textile merchants have been located their headquarters. In Minato-ku, many rental office buildings have been located and several large scale redevelopments are advancing. Chiyoda-ku includes Marunouchi area, which is the prime office area in Japan. Thirty percent of the buildings in survey areas suffer from over twenty percent vacant floor rate, and fifty five percent were constructed before 1990. Especially most of buildings over forty percent vacant floor rate were constructed in 1980s. Vacant office problems haven't been seen in old buildings in Tokyo yet. The number of dwelling units made from office space will influence the conversion scheme. Seventy percent of the office buildings in survey areas have floor area of less than two hundred square meters. If they have been subdivided into two bedrooms type or three bedrooms type, the number of dwelling units in a floor would be less than three. The difficulty of conversion planning derives from frontage size, depth size, and their proportion. The five categories are proposed to grasp actual requirements for converting offices into flats.
This study was carried out in August and September 2016 to investigate the species composition and biomass of benthic diatoms in Yubu Island, Gomso Bay, Imja Island, and Yeoja Bay tidal flat of Southwestern coast. There were 181 species of 48 genera in Yubu Island tidal flats, 194 species of 51 genera in Gomso Bay tidal flats, 224 species of 64 genera in Imja Island tidal flats and 188 species of 56 genera in Yeoja Bay tidal flats. A total of 274 species of 70 genera appeared. Pennales appeared more widely than Centrales and were dominated by Paralia sulcata and Navicula spp. Biomass of Yubu Island tidal flat ranged from $18.8-136.1mg\;m^{-2}$, $31.9-215.7mg\;m^{-2}$ in Gomso Bay, $2.9-120.2mg\;m^{-2}$ in Imja Island and $10.1-147.7mg\;m^{-2}$ in Yeoja Bay. The range of total biomass from 4 areas was $2.9-215.7mg\;m^{-2}$. The concentration of phaeopigment and degradation product of chlorophyll-a was $1.7-470.8mg\;m^{-2}$ in Yubu Island tidal flat, $52.3-277.2mg\;m^{-2}$ in Gomso Bay, $0.6-78.9mg\;m^{-2}$ in Imja Island and $39.1-346.3mg\;m^{-2}$ in Yeoja Bay. Compared with the results reported in this study area and the domestic tidal flats, it cannot be directly compared and evaluated due to various factors such as the timing of the survey, the frequency of the survey, the analysis method and geography. The southwestern coast of Korea has a variety of benthic diatoms and the high concentration of chlorophyll-a is the main determinant of primary productivity.
The habitat degradation caused by large-scale reclamation leads to devastating impacts, such as fine sediment and mud shrimp Upogebia major settlement on Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum aquaculture in the eastern Cheonsu Bay tidal flats, Republic of Korea. Despite these impacts, there is a lack of studies on the influence of fine sediments on tidal flats that constitute key mud shrimp habitats. This study provides information on the seawater-sediment environment and the influence of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) fluctuations depending on mud shrimp burrow hole density. Additionally, it discusses countermeasures for Manila clam habitat management. The results show that mean DIN effluxes in areas with a high-density of burrow holes were up to 4 times (0.12 mmol m-2 d-1) higher than those in sites of low-density (0.03 mmol m-2 d-1) within the Saho and Songhak-ri tidal flats. To manage interference within the competition zone of Songhak-ri tidal flat, it is important to utilize the settlements of spawning season in all three dimensions. Consequently, additional studies in other tidal flats are essential and research in zones where mud shrimps and juvenile clams coexist will help to determine the priorities in the efficient management of clam aquaculture.
