  • Leaking of fuel gas in a building creates flammable atmosphere and gives rise to explosion. Observations from accidents suggest that some explosions are caused by quantity of gas significantly less than the lower explosion limit amount required to fill the whole confined space, which might be attributed to inhomogeneous mixing of the leaked gas. The minimum amount of leaked gas for explosion is highly dependent on the degree of mixing in the building. This paper proposes a method for estimating minimum amount of flammable gas for explosion assuming Gaussian distribution of flammable gas.

  • In order to evaluate the fire and explosion involved and to ensure the safe and optimized operation of chemical processes, it is necessary to know combustion properties. Explosion limit is one of the major combustion properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. In this study, the lower explosion and upper explosion limits of esters were predicted by using the heat of combustion. The values calculated by the proposed equations agreed with literature data within a few percent. From the given results, using the proposed methodology, it is possible to predict the explosion limits of the other ester flammable substances.

  • A study has been conducted to investigate the effect of swirl angle in low swirl combustor. In this study, the employed swirl angles were $28^{\circ}$, $32^{\circ}$ and $37^{\circ}$. Direct flame photos show that the width of the flame is expanded and the length of the flame is shortened when swirl angle is increased. Also, as the swirl angle was increased, the flame stability region could be widened due to the expansion of lower flammable limit. Between 3 and 7kW, CO emissions was below 10 ppm and NOx emissions was also below 27 ppm at $O_2$ 15% basis over the lean burning range of 0.6 < ${\Phi}$ < 0.9. From this investigation of stability expansion effect and emission performance, it was identified that the swirl angle $37^{\circ}$ is most suitable swirling condition in the low swirl model combustor.

  • Currently, local regulations, such as KS Code, do not clearly specify how to calculate the range of hazardous area, so the dispersion modeling program should be used to select dispersion. The purpose of this study is to present a methodology of determining the range of hazardous area which is simpler and more reasonable than modelling by using representative materials and process conditions. Based on domestic and overseas regulations that are currently in effect, variables affecting distance to LFL(Lower Flammable Limit) were selected. A total of 16 flammable substances were modelled for substance variables, process conditions variables, and weather conditions variables, and the statistical analysis selected the variables that affect them. Using the selected variables, a three-step classification method was prepared to select the range of locations subject to explosion hazard.

  • In this study, the conditions of explosion range of gasoline, which is used as combustion improver, are experimentally analyzed. Two types of compartment, which is the small scale ($0.5m{\times}0.5m{\times}1.0m$) and the middle scale ($0.5m{\times}0.5m{\times}1.0m$), are mocked-up and the auto-control systems are installed in order to measure the vaporized gasoline and the moment of pressure, ignition time and maximum pressure. In case the maximum flammable limit of gasoline is up to 22.4 Vol% not the generalized range of 1.4~7.6 Vol% when nichrome igniter of $700^{\circ}C$ is used. These results can be appled to the analytical prediction of fire identification in the field of explosion.

  • In this study, the lower detonation limits(LDL) and the upper detonation limits(UDL) of the flammable substances predicted with the appropriate use of the heat of combustion and the stoichiometric coefficient. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with literature data within a few percent. From a given results, It is to be hoped that this methodology will contribute to the estimation of the detonation limits of for other flammable substances.

  • The research on the explosive limits is one of fundamental fields of combustion process, and information on the explosive limits of mixture of fuel and oxidant, with or without additives, is very important for the prevention in industrial fire and explosion accidents. Explosive limits of all compounds and solvent mixtures can be calculated with the appropriate use of the fundamental laws of Raoult, Batten, Le Chatelier and MRSM(modified response surface methodology) model. In this study, the reference values of lower explosive limits(LEL) of the ethanol+toluene+ethylacetate system were compared with the calculated values by using the solution thermodynamics and the MRSM model, respectively. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with literature data within a few percent. By means of this methodology, it is possible to evaluate reliability of experimental data of the lower explosive limits of the flammable mixtures. Also, from given results, it is possible to predict explosive limits of the other flammable liquid mixtures used in the chemical process by the use of the proposed equations.

  • Flammable substances are often present in the raw materials of pharmaceutical products manufactured by pharmaceutical companies. In this case, an excessive amount of flammable substances is added to make an intermediate, and flammable substances that do not participate in the reaction are removed through filtration and drying steps. In addition, the flammable liquid separated in the filtration process is accumulated in the form of splash filling in the filtrate container. In this case, vapor and mist of flammable liquid are generated, which lowers the lower limit of explosion and minimum ignition energy, and increases the risk of fire and explosion due to complex charging. In this study, by analyzing fire accidents that occurred during the recent filtration process of pharmaceutical companies, it is proposed to prevent static electricity accumulation by measures of nitrogen supply facilities, capacity improvement, conductive filter fabric and so on.
