Measurement and Prediction of the Combustible Properties of Cumene (큐멘(Cumene)의 연소특성치의 측정 및 예측)

  • The usage of the correct combustion characteristic of the treated substance for the safety of the process is critical. For the safe handling of cumene being used in various ways in the chemical industry, the flash point and the autoignition temperature (AIT) of cumene was experimented. And, the lower explosion limit of cumene was calculated by using the lower flash point obtained in the experiment. The flash points of cumene by using the Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers measured $31^{\circ}C$ and $33^{\circ}C$, respectively. The flash points of cumene by using the Tag and Cleveland open cup testers are measured $43^{\circ}C$ and $45^{\circ}C$. The AIT of cumene by ASTM 659E tester was measured as $419^{\circ}C$. The lower explosion limit by the measured flash point $31^{\circ}C$ was calculated as 0.87 vol%. It was possible to predict lower explosion limit by using the experimental flash point or flash point in the literature.

  • The autoignition temperatures (AITs) of solvent mixture was important index for the safe handling of flammable liquids which constitute the solvent mixtures. This study measured the AITs and ignition delay time for n-propanol and formic acid system by using ASTM E659 apparatus. The AITs of n-Propanol and Formic acid which constituted binary system were $435^{\circ}C$ and $498^{\circ}C$, respectively. The experimental AITs of n-propanol and formic acid system were a good agreement with the calculated AITs by the proposed equations with a few A.A.D. (average absolute deviation). And n- Propanol and formic acid system was shown the minimum autoignition temperature behavior (MAITB).

  • The development of flame retardants aims to prevent the spread of fire and reduce the casualties caused by flammable and toxic gases generated during the combustion of building materials used in the interiors of multi-use facilities. Flame material application provides flame resistance to a silica sol in an organic-inorganic hybrid material by flame retardant adhesive or coating by producing a sol-gel method. The conventional flame retardant materials, non-flame retardant material is applied with Halogen freeway. In particular, the basic physical properties of conventional adhesive coating improves the heat resistance, enhances the durability fire and heat, and expands the halogen free flame retardant of building materials.

  • Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are receiving great attention because of their unusual material properties, such as high thermal conductivity, mechanical strength, and electrical resistance. However, high-throughput and high-efficiency synthesis of BNNTs has been hindered due to the high boiling point of boron (${\sim}4000^{\circ}C$) and weak interaction between boron and nitrogen. Although, hydrogen-catalyzed plasma synthesis has shown potential for scalable synthesis of BNNTs, the direct use of $H_2$ gas as a precursor material is not strongly recommended, as it is extremely flammable. In the present study, BNNTs have been synthesized using radio-frequency inductively coupled thermal plasma (RF-ITP) catalyzed by solid-state ammonium chloride ($NH_4Cl$), a safe catalyst materials for BNNT synthesis. Similar to BNNTs synthesized from h-BN (hexagonal boron nitride) + $H_2$, successful fabrication of BNNTs synthesized from $h-BN+NH_4Cl$ is confirmed by their sheet-like properties, FE-SEM images, and XRD analysis. In addition, improved dispersion properties in aqueous solution are found in BNNTs synthesized from $h-BN+NH_4Cl$.

Measurement of Autoignition Temperature for Toluene + iso-Propanol (IPA) and p-Xylene+n-Butanol Systems (Toluene과 iso-Propanol계 및 p-Xylene과 n-Butanol계의 자연발화온도 측정)

  • The values of the AIT (autoignition temperature) for fire and explosion protection are normally the lowest reported. The MAITB (Minimum Autoignition Temperature Behavior) of flammable liquid mixture is exhibited when the AITs of mixture is below the AIT of the individual components. The MAITB is an interesting experimental features, which can be significant from the perspective of industrial fire safety. In this study, the AITs of toluene + iso-propanol(IPA) and p-xylene + n-butanol systems were measured using ASTM E659-78 apparatus. The AITs of toluene, iso-propanol (IPA), pxylene and n-butanol which constituted two binary systems were $547^{\circ}C,\;463^{\circ}C,\;557^{\circ}C$ and $340^{\circ}C$ respectively. The toluene + iso-propanol(IPA) system is exhibited MAITB at 0.3 mole fraction of toluene, and its minimum autoignition temperature was $460^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, computational simulation was performed to investigate the characteristics of air/fuel mixing according to the shape of the injector exit when the transverse jet was injected into a supersonic flow. Non-reacting flow simulation was conducted with fixed mass flow rate and the same cross-sectional area. To validate the results, free stream Mach number and jet-to-crossflow memetum ratio are set to 3.38 and 1.4, respectively, which is same as the experimental condition. Further, separation region, structure of the under-expended jet, jet penetration height, and flammable region of hydrogen for five different injectors compared.

  • During the course of a severe accident in a light water nuclear reactor, large amounts of hydrogen can be generated and released into the containment during reactor core degradation. Additional burnable gases [hydrogen ($H_2$) and carbon monoxide (CO)] may be released into the containment in the corium/concrete interaction. This could subsequently raise a combustion hazard. As the Fukushima accidents revealed, hydrogen combustion can cause high pressure spikes that could challenge the reactor buildings and lead to failure of the surrounding buildings. To prevent the gas explosion hazard, most mitigation strategies adopted by European countries are based on the implementation of passive autocatalytic recombiners (PARs). Studies of representative accident sequences indicate that, despite the installation of PARs, it is difficult to prevent at all times and locations, the formation of a combustible mixture that potentially leads to local flame acceleration. Complementary research and development (R&D) projects were recently launched to understand better the phenomena associated with the combustion hazard and to address the issues highlighted after the Fukushima Daiichi events such as explosion hazard in the venting system and the potential flammable mixture migration into spaces beyond the primary containment. The expected results will be used to improve the modeling tools and methodology for hydrogen risk assessment and severe accident management guidelines. The present paper aims to present the methodology adopted by Institut de Radioprotection et de $S{\hat{u}}ret{\acute{e}}$ $Nucl{\acute{e}}aire$ to assess hydrogen risk in nuclear power plants, in particular French nuclear power plants, the open issues, and the ongoing R&D programs related to hydrogen distribution, mitigation, and combustion.

Large Scale Experiments Simulating Hydrogen Distribution in a Spent Fuel Pool Building During a Hypothetical Fuel Uncovery Accident Scenario

  • Following the Fukushima accident and its extended station blackout, attention was brought to the importance of the spent fuel pools' (SFPs) behavior in case of a prolonged loss of the cooling system. Since then, many analytical works have been performed to estimate the timing of hypothetical fuel uncovery for various SFP types. Experimentally, however, little was done to investigate issues related to the formation of a flammable gas mixture, distribution, and stratification in the SFP building itself and to some extent assess the capability for the code to correctly predict it. This paper presents the main outcomes of the Experiments on Spent Fuel Pool (ESFP) project carried out under the auspices of Swissnuclear (Framework 2012-2013) in the PANDA facility at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland. It consists of an experimental investigation focused on hydrogen concentration build-up into a SFP building during a predefined scaled scenario for different venting positions. Tests follow a two-phase scenario. Initially steam is released to mimic the boiling of the pool followed by a helium/steam mixture release to simulate the deterioration of the oxidizing spent fuel. Results shows that while the SFP building would mainly be inerted by the presence of a high concentration of steam, the volume located below the level of the pool in adjacent rooms would maintain a high air content. The interface of the two-gas mixture presents the highest risk of flammability. Additionally, it was observed that the gas mixture could become stagnant leading locally to high hydrogen concentration while steam condenses. Overall, the experiments provide relevant information for the potentially hazardous gas distribution formed in the SFP building and hints on accident management and on eventual retrofitting measures to be implemented in the SFP building.

Flame Retardancy of Polypropylene/Montmorillonite Nanocomposites with Halogenated Flame Retardants (할로젠 계열의 난연제가 첨가된 폴리프로필렌/몬모릴로나이트 나노복합재료의 난연특성)

  • The flame retardancy was investigated when the halogenated flame retardant, decabromodiphenyl oxide (DBDPO) and chlorinated paraffin wax (CPW), was added to the polypropylene (PP) / montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites. The flame retardancy of polymer resin could be improved not only by addition of flame retardant but also with nanoparticles compositions. The effect of the contents of flame retardant and nanoparticles on the flame retardancy of polypropylene/ montmorillonite nanocomposite systems was thoroughly examined in terms of limited oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimetry. As a results of cone calorimetry, the heat release rate (HRR) was reduced by the flame retardant DBDPO and CPW, and CPW was a little better than DBDPO. The LOI increased from flammable region (LOI<19) to nonflammable region (LOI>20) for all the flame retardants used in this study. Especially, the improvement in flame retardancy by compounding with PP and MMT was better than that by adding flame retardant to polypropylene. So, the addition of flame retardant after compounding with montmorillonite was more efficient than simple addition of flame retardant.

The Study of Fire Suppression Capability of Sprinkler System for Wooden Cultural Properties (스프링클러 소화설비의 목조문화재 소화성능에 관한 연구)

  • The domestic wooden cultural properties applied to the sprinkler extinguishing system was confirmed extinguishing performance through fire experiments. Consists of wooden cultural properties of a fire, a flammable material is vulnerable in terms of. The scale of fire will occur to vary appearance of the initial fire in case of arson. Sprinkler nozzles of the characteristics, the discharging pressure is 1 bar and the flow rate is 80 lpm, applied in this experiment. Fire performance experiments were tested in two separated in each of the scale of the fire and cultural properties. Fire extinguishing performance test results was low in high ceilings and two or more units of the fire scale. Fire growth environment of the actual wooden cultural properties to experimental models when you consider that it is more vulnerable, sprinkler extinguishing system is required sufficient verification in order to apply fire protection of the wooden cultural properties.
