  • It is attempted to develop flame retardant polyurethane coatings, which have received significant attention in recent years. It is the purpose of this study to synthesize new reactive polyurethane coatings containing halogen. Lactone based modified polyester polyols, using trichlorobenzoic acid as chlorine moiety (TBAOs) were synthesized. These polyesters were cured with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI)-isocyanurate at room temperature (TBAPUs). Physical properties of these flame retardant coatings were similar with those of non-flame retardant coatings. The flammability of coatings was strongly dependent on the chlorine contents. We found that the increasing chlorine contents showed better flame retarding properties and that, however, they also resulted in more smog generation during combustion. The detailed results of flammability test using various methods indicated $24{\sim}26%$ in LOI and $3.7{\sim}5.3\;cm$ char length in $45^{\circ}$ Meckel burner method.

  • Wood-plastic composites represents a growing class of materials used by the residential construction industry and furniture industry. In this study, the effect of flame retardants on the flammability and mechanical properties of wood flour-high density polyethylene(HDPE) composites were studied. we were manufactured wood flour-HDPE composites by modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder with L/D ratio of 42. The flame retardant properties were used limiting oxygen index(LOI) and mechanical properties were measured by universal testing machine(UTM). The Morphological analysis of composites were analyzed by Scanning electron microscope(SEM). It was found that Ammonium polyphosphate can effectively reduce the flammability of the wood flour-HDPE composites. Marginal reduction in the mechanical properties of the composites was found with addition of flame retardants. SEM images showed that the coupling agent improved wood flour-HDPE interfacial bonding.

  • Edge flames have been interested as a basic structure that is concerned to flame stabilization and re-ignition of non-premixed flames. The edge flame consists of a lean premixed flame, a rich premixed flame, and a diffusion flame. In order to investigate fundamental structures of the edge flames at the conditions near the flammability limits, edge flames were stabilized within a heated narrow channel. Highly diluted partially premixed methane was used, and the flow rates of air and the partially premixed mixture were controlled. Various flame behaviors, including a transition between ordinary edge flames and premixed flames, were observed. Flame stabilization characteristics were examined as well. All flame stabilization conditions in this study showed a similar trend: characteristic time scales were inversely proportional to the equivalence ratio defined at the burner inlet. Finally, an interesting flame structure having a weak diffusion branch enveloped by a closed premixed branch was found near the flammability limits even in a fuel-air mixing layer. This structure was named as a "flame-drop" and the importance of this structure was first suggested.

  • The effects of interaction between partially premixed and premixed swirl flames on CO and NOx emissions were experimentally investigated using a hybrid/dual swirl jet combustor for a micro-gas turbine. Under the condition of constant angle ($45^{\circ}$) for outer swirl vane, the angle and direction of inner swirl vane installed for a partially premixed flame were varied as main parameters with a constant fuel flow rate for each nozzle. It was found that for all conditions, CO and NOx emissions were measured below 4 ppm and 15 ppm at 15% $O_2$, respectively, in a wide range of equivalence ratio (0.6~0.9). For co-swirl flows, CO emission increased dramatically as the angle of inner swirl vane increased from $15^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$ near lean-flammability limit (i.e. equivalence ratio of 0.5). On the other hand, the case of swirl $angle=45^{\circ}$ provided the lowest NOx emission at higher equivalence ratios than 0.6. For counter-swirl flows, the case of swirl $angle=45^{\circ}$ extended the lean-flammability limit but higher NOx emissions were found compared to those of co-swirl flows. These results could be inferred by interaction between (inner) partially premixed and (outer) premixed swirl flames. However, these estimations were not clear yet because there was insufficient data on turbulent flow structure and fuel-air mixing in the present experimental approach.

  • An experimental study on geometric optimization was conducted to develop a hybrid/dual swirl jet combustor for a micro-gas turbine. A hybrid concept indicating a combination of swirling jet partially premixed and premixed flames were adopted to achieve high flame stability as well as clean combustion. Location of pilot nozzle, angle and direction of swirl vane were varied as main parameters with a constant fuel flow rate for each nozzle. The results showed that the variation in location of pilot nozzle resulted in significant change in swirl intensity due to the change in flow area near burner exit, and thus, optimized nozzle location was determined on the basis of CO and NOx emissions under conditions of co-swirl flow and swirl $angle=30^{\circ}$. The increase in swirl angle (from $30^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$) enhanced the emission performances, in particular, with a significant reduction of CO emission near lean-flammability limit. It was observed that the CO emission near lean-flammability limit was further reduced through the counter-swirl flow. However, there was not significant change in the NOx emission in the operating conditions (i.e. equivalence ratio of 0.6~0.7) between the co- and the counter-swirl flow.

  • In this study, we have evaluated the hazardous factors of fires such as heat release rate, smoke density, ignition temperature, and flammability of carpet and curtain used in the public facilities. As a result of flame retardant treatment, the heat release rate of materials treated with flame retardant was lower than that of not treated. However, the smoke density of treated materials was higher than that of not treated. Also, we have investigated the fire characteristics of used and unused carpet. As a result, the heat release rate and the smoke density of used for 3 years carpet were higher than those of unused carpet. The distinct differences of flammability and ignition temperature between used and unused carpet were confirmed.

  • Polyurethane(PU) was mixtured by the treatment with flame retardants such as Tri(chloroisopropyl) phosphate(TCPP), Triethyl phosphate(TEP) and Trimethyl phosphate(TMP) at about $90^{\circ}C$. Rigid polyurethane foam was produced using the mixured products as flame retardants. The mechanical property and flammability of rigid polyurethane was investigated. The mixtured polyurethane shows reduced flammability over virgin polyurethane. Mechanical strength of mixtured polyurethane also shows as high as that of virgin polyurethane. In order to evaluate flame retardant properties of the mixtured polyurethane foams, heat release rate(HRR) of the foam was measured by cone calorimeter. Scanning electron micrograph of mixtured PU shows uniform cell morphology as virgin PU.

  • Hydrogen has reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the main cause of global warming, and is emerging as an eco-friendly energy source for ships. Hydrogen is a substance with a lower flammability limit (LFL) of 4 to 75% and a high risk of explosion. To be used for ships, it must be sufficiently safe against leaks. In this study, we analyzed the effect of changes in the area of the air inlet / vent port on the ventilation performance when hydrogen leaks occur in the hydrogen tank storage room. The area of the air inlet / vent port is 1A = 740 mm × 740 mm, and the size and position can be easily changed on the surface of the storage chamber. Using ANSYS CFX ver 18.1, which is a CFD commercial software, the area of the air inlet / vent port was changed to 1A, 2A, 3A, and 5A, and the hydrogen mole fraction in the storage chamber when the area changed was analyzed. Consequently, the increase in the area of the air inlet port further reduced the concentration of the leaked hydrogen as compared with that of the vent port, and improved the ventilation performance of at least 2A or more from the single air inlet port. As the area of the air inlet port increased, hydrogen was uniformly stratified at the upper part of the storage chamber, but was out of the LFL range. However, simply increasing the area of the vent port inadequately affected the ventilation performance.
