Flash Point Calculation for n-Octane+n-Decane and n-Octane+n-Dodecane by UNIFAC Group Contribution Model (UNIFAC 그룹 기여 모델에 의한 n-Octnae+n-Decane 계와 n-Octane+n-Dodecane 계의 인화점 계산)

  • The flash point is used to categorize inflammable liquids according to their relative flammability. Such a categorization is important for the safe handling, storage, and transportation of inflammable liquids. The flash point temperature of two binary liquid mixtures(n-octane+n-decane and n-octane+n-dodecane) has been measured for the entire concentration range using Seta-flash closed cup tester based on the ASTM D3278 method. The closed cup flash point temperature was estimated using the UNIFAC(Universal Functional Activity Coefficient) group contribution model. The experimentally derived flash point was also compared with the predicted flash point from the UNIFAC model. The UNIFAC model is able to estimate the flash point fairly well for n-octane+n-decane mixture and n-octane+n-dodecane mixture.

The Effect of Oxygen Concentration in Hot Exhaust Gas on the $NO_{x}$ Emission of Diffusion Flame in Exhaust Gas (고온 배기가스의 산소농도가 배기가스이용 확산화염의 $NO_{x}$ 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study examined the possibility of $NO_{x}$ reduction in the high temperature industrial furnaces. duct burner of gas turbine cogeneration and two-stage gas turbine combustor. The experimental study was carried out for the diffusion flame of second stage combustor with the variations of oxygen concentration and supplying rate of hot exhaust gas from first stage combustor. It also examined the flammability range and $NO_{x}$ formation of the second stage combustor in which the fuel is supplying into the mixture of oxygen hot exhaust gas from first stage combustor. The results show that the enrichment of oxygen and increase of exhaust gas lead to increase the $NO_{x}$ up to 50 ppm with 23% $O_{2}$ condition.

A Study of Characteristics of Weft Used in Wig Manufacturing (가발에 사용되는 원사의 특성 연구)

  • This study was used a thermogravimetric analyzer to determine thermal characteristics, a hair analysis system to examine morphological changes of wefts-human hair, poly vinyl chloride(PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-used in manufacturing wigs. According to a flammability test on human hair and synthetic wefts for wigs, the best results were observed in human hair. According to a thermal test, PET was the best in terms of thermal stability. Also good tensile strength was observed as well. In a scanning electron microscope observation, no human hair scale layer was found because of chemical treatment. In the PVC sample, homogeneous unevenness was observed. Due to a lack of human hair supply and increase in its price, recently, PET weft has emerged as a great substitution for human hair. Because it can be curled using an electric curling device and is more efficient than the conventional non-flammable material PVC in terms of thermal resistance, it will become the next-generation weft for wigs.

  • Lean burn combustion is an important concept for improving the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. However, the lean burning is associated with increased cycle-to-cycle combustion variations due to the ignition instabilities and redu- ced flame propagation rates. Engine stability under lean mixture conditions could be improved by increasing flame speed through enhanced flow characteristics and by securing ignitability with improvement of ignition systems. The effects of flow motion and ignition characteristics on the combustion performances were investigated in a 4-valve SI engine. Flow motions of tumble-swirl were varied with a swirl control valve attached at the inlet ports, while ignition energy and its distribution were controlled in a high -frequency ignition system by changing spark duration and spark frequency. The improvement of lean burn performance by the optimum flow motion and ignition characteristics is discussed.

  • A series of conveyer rubber belts has been made by blending natural rubber(NR), styrene butadiene rubber(SBR), chloroprene rubber(CR) and additives on nylon cords, and their respective flammability has been investigated. It has been observed that: 1. By adding an antiflame agent to the belt, in addition to 70% chlorinated paraffine and antimony oxide($Sb_{2}O_{3}$), the inflammability is improved remarkably to O - 2 seconds due to the synergistic effect, while a sample without antiflame B fails to pass the KS M 6678 test. 2. Physical properties, such as tensile strength, elongation at break and adhesion strength, of the sample belts have been studies by varying ratios of NR/CR from 20 to 100, and it has been observed that the higher ratios have the better physical properties.

  • An experimental study has been carried on high-preheated temperature air combustion. The flames with high-preheated temperature air combustion turned out to be both temporally and spatially much more stable and homogeneous than these with room-temperature combustion air. The global flame feature showed a range of flame colors (yellow, blue, blurish-green) according to the flame conditions. A low level of NOx along with low level of CO has been obtained under high-preheated air combustion conditions. The thermal and chemical behavior of high-preheated air combustion flames depends on the preheated temperature and the oxygen concentration of air.

  • MRSM(modified response surface methodology)-2 model is presented for the prediction of boiling points in combustible solution of quaternary systems. This model requires only normal boiling points of pure substances and group-group parameters which are based on the group-group concepts without the use of experimental data under consideration. By means of this methodology, it is possible to predict the boiling points of the combustible mixture of quaternary systems by plotting of isothermal lines using computer graphics. The proposed methodology has been tested and compared successfully with reported boiling points in journals for the combustible solution of quaternary systems. It is hoped eventually that this methodology will permit prediction of the flash point and flammability limit for the combustible mixture of multicomponent systems.

  • Recently, fuel reforming technology for the fuel cell vehicle has been applied to internal combustion engines, with various purpose. Syngas which is reformed from fossil fuel has hydrogen as a major component. It has better effort in combustion characteristics such as wide flammability and hig speed flame propagation. In this study, syngas was added to a gasoline engine for the improvement of combustion stability and exhaust emission in idle state. Combustion stability, exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature were measured to investigate the effects of syngas addition on idle performance. Results showed that syngas has ability to extend lean operation limit and ignition retard range. with dramatical reduction of engine out emissions.

  • Using a counterflow burner, downstream interactions between $CH_4$-air and $H_2/N_2$-Air premixed flames with various equivalence ratios has been experimentally investigated. Flame stability maps on triple and twin flames are provided in terms of global strain rate and equivalence ratio. Lean and rich flammable limits are examined for methane/air and hydrogen/nitrogen/air mixtures over the entire range of mixture concentrations in the interacting flames. Results show that these flammable limits can be significantly modified in the presence of interaction such that mixture conditions beyond the flammability limit can be still burn if it is supported by stronger flame. The experiment also discusses various oscillatory instabilities in a stability map.
