  • The presenet research attempts to examine the combustion characteristics and the structure of the flame in turbulent premixed flames and thus enhance the combustion performance that leads to the design of the effective combustion system (untilizing LNG). Following experimental investigations for several stabilized premixed flames were attempted to identify the interactive mechanism between flame structures and flow fields; Visualization by Schlieren method, measurement of flow velocity by LDV, detection of ion current by ion probe, measurement of fluctuating temperature by thermocouple having compensation circuit, average values with respect to time of fluctuating amount for flow velocity, temperature, ion current, etc., variable RMS values, PDFs, autocorrelation, crosscorrelation, spatial macroscale, power spectra, and velocity scale. Continuing the authors published studies whose flame dominated by coherent structures and the characteristics of combustion reaction for irregular three dimensional flame and stabilized flame by step were investigated with obtained experimental quantities. Results of this research are following : The most turbulent flames support the structure of a Wrinkled laminar flame or laminar flamelets. It also observed that combustion reaction is related to small tubulence microscales of the turbulent flow fields closly.

  • In oder to analyze the effect of operating conditions on pulverized coal combustion, a numerical study is conducted at the pulverized coal combustor. Eulerian approach is used for the gas phase, whereas Lagrangian approach is used for the particle phase. Turbulence is modeled using standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. The description of species transport and combustion chemistry is based on the mixture fraction/probability density function(PDF) approach. Radiation is modeled using P-l model. The turbulent dispersion of particles is modeled using discrete random walk model. Swirl number of secondary air affects the flame front, particle residence time and carbon conversion. Primary/Secondary air mass ratio also affects the flame front but little affects the carbon conversion and particle residence time. Air-fuel ratio only affects the flame front due to lack of oxygen. Radiation strongly affects the flame front and gas temperature distribution because pulverized coal flame of high temperature is considered.

  • Combustion using oxygen enriched air is an energy saving technology that can increase thermal efficiency by the improvement of burning rate and high temperature flame. But information about it is not so enough yet. Flame figure, temperature distribution and emission concentration were measured with oxygen enriched concentration and swirl number in a turbulent diffusion flame to investigate the combustion characteristics. The results showed that flame figure became different as long as oxygen enriched concentration varied and that concentration of NO increased suddenly around $O_2$ 60%.

  • Profiles of soot volume fraction, average diameter and particle number density have been measured using a light scattering and extinction technique in a coannular propane diffusion flame at atmosperic pressure. Temperature profiles were also obtained using a thermocouple technique. Measurements show that soot is first observed to form low in the flame in an annular region inside the main reaction zone. At higher locations this annular region widen until entire flame is observed to contain particles. Soot volume fraction and particle diameter profiles peak some 1mm on the fuel side of peak temperature and increase with height to oxidation region. Number density of the flame core drop steeply from formation region to growth region and relatively invariant to some height and decay out at flame tip.

  • A theoretical study for the laminar round jet diffusion flame impinging on the wall was carried out to predict the characteristics and structure of impinging jet flame and heat transfer to the wall. Finite chemistry via Arrhenius equation was adopted as the combustion model. All the transport properties were considered as the variable depending on the temperature and composition. For the parametric study, the distance from nozzle to perpendicular wall and Reynolds number at nozzle exit were chosen as the major parameters. As the results of the present study, the characteristics of flow field and the distributions of temperature, density and each chemical species were obtained. The heat transfer rate from flame to the wall and the effective heating area were calculated to investigate the influence of the major parameters on the heat transfer characteristics.

  • There is needed the quard channel triple wave lengths pyroelectric infrared flame detector to recognize the unique characteristics of fire sources in various type. This system detects the triple wave lengths of infrared flame emitting maximum radient energy and scattering frequency of flame. The quard channel infrared flame detector detects the duplicate wave lengths of maximum radient energy to enhance the accuracy of detecting fire. Especially this paper focuss on development of the self diagnosis function system including contamination, temperature and input voltage. Therefore, the prevention and early suppression of fire is available.

  • Forest fire can give a serious damage to overhead conductors. Therefore, the definite understanding about aging behavior of burned conductor is very important in maintaining the transmission line safely. It is sure that the temperature of conductor itself will be affected by the distance apart from flame. From this point of a view, we monitored the conductor's temperature with distance from flame. As a result, the conductor's temperature decreased as the flame goes away from the conductor gradually. The temperature of conductor was reached up to 55~65% level of its atmospheric temperature. The detailed results will be presented in the text.

  • The effects of SiCl$_4$addition on flame structures have been studied in flame hydrolysis deposition (FHD) processes using Coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) and planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) to measure temperatures and OH concentrations, respectively. The results demonstrate that even a small amount of SiCl$_4$ addition can change thermal and chemical structures of H$_2$/O$_2$ diffusion flames. When SiCl$_4$ is added to a flame temperature decreases in non-reacting zone due to the increases in both specific heat and density of the gas mixture, while flame temperature increase in particle formation zone due to the heat release through hydrolysis and oxidation reactions of SiCl$_4$. It is also found that OH concentration decreases dramatically in particle formation zone where temperatures increase. This can be attributed to consumption of oxidative species and generation of HCl during silica formation.

  • H-shaped welded steel column members are fabricated by welding together pre-cut flanges and the web. Modern fabricators are increasingly using plasma-cutting technique instead of traditional flame cutting. Different fabrication techniques result in different degrees of geometric imperfections and residual stresses, which can have considerable influence on the strength of steel columns. This paper presents the experimental investigation based temperature profiles, geometric imperfections, and built-in residual stresses in plasma cut-welded H-shaped steel column members and in similar flame cut-welded H-shaped steel columns. Temperature measurements were taken during and immediately after the cutting operations and the welding operations. The geometric imperfections were established at closely spaced grid locations on the original plates, after cutting plates into plate strips, and after welding plate strips into columns. Geometric imperfections associated with plasma cut element and members were found to be less than those of the corresponding elements and members made by flame cutting. The "Method of Section" technique was used to establish the residual stresses in the plate, plate strip, and in the welded columns. Higher residual stress values were observed in flame cut-welded columns. Models for idealized residual stress distributions for plasma cut and flame cut welded sections have been proposed.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the combustion characteristics of the liquid hydrocarbon fuel atomized by an ultrasonic oscillator. Configuration of the flame was caught by the DSLR camera, and images were analyzed in detail through a post-processing. Temperature of the flame zone was measured using thermocouple. It is resulted that the flame area is proportional to the mass flow rate of carrier gas as well as the voltage applied to the ultrasonic oscillator. Temperature of the flame zone is measured and analyzed according to variation in the operating condition of the burner, too.
