We prepared the nano-sized $TiO_2$ particles by the diffusion flame reactor and investigated the effects of several process variables on the generation and transport properties of $TiO_2$ particle. As the length from the tip of diffusion flame reactor increases, the size of $TiO_2$ particle increases by the coagulation between particles. The structure of $TiO_2$ particles prepared is almost found to be anatase. It was found that the $TiO_2$ particle size depends more largely on the change of reactor temperature than on the change of inlet $TiCl_4$ concentration. By the photo-degradation experiment of phenol and toluene with the prepared $TiO_2$ particles, we found that the photo-degradation efficiencies of phenol and toluene change, depending on the process variables such as size of $TiO_2$ photocatlysts, concentration of phenol or toluene. Degradation efficiencies of phenol and toluene was above 90% in our experiments in 60 minutes.

One dimensional combustion modeling of aluminum combustion behavior is proposed. Combustion model is assumed that region consists as follows ; preheat, reaction, post reaction region. Flame speed as a function of particle size, equivalence ratio for unitary particles and fraction ratio of micro to nano particle size for binary particles were investigated for lean burn condition at 1 atm. Results were compared with experimental data. For unitary particles, flame speed increase as particle size decreases, but opposite trend with equivalence ratio. For binary particles, flame speed increases proportionally as nano particle fraction increases. For flame structure, separated or overlapping flames are observed, depending on the fraction of nano sized particles.
This paper presents spray and combustion characteristics of hydrocarbon fuel injected from pressure-swirl nozzles. Three commercial nozzles with orifice diameters of 0.256, 0.308 and 0.333mm and injection pressures ranging from 0.7 to 1.3 MPa were selected f9r the experiments. Spray characteristics such as breakup length. spray angle and drop size (SMD) were analyzed using photo image analyses and Malvern Panicle Size Analyzer. The drop size was measured with and without a blower at the same measuring locations. The flame length and width were measured using photo image analyses. The temperature distribution along the axial distance and the gas emission such as CO, $CO_2\;and\;NO_x$ were studied. The breakup length decreased with an increase in injection pressure for each nozzle but increased with an increase in nozzle orifice diameter. The spray angle increased and SMD decreased with an increase in injection pressure. The flame with an increased linearly with an increase in injection pressure and in nozzle orifice diameter. The flame temperature increased with an increase in injection pressure but decreased along the axial distance. The maximum temperatures occurred closer to the burner exit and flame at axial distance of 242mm from the diffuser tip. The experimental results showed that the level of CO decreased while that of $CO_2\;and\;NO_x$ increased with an increase in injection pressure and nozzle orifice diameter.

Electrical characteristics of soot particles in a LPG diffusion flame were studied for the control of soot particle coagulation. When a DC voltage was applied between two electrodes installed parallel to gas flow, ionic wind effect caused soot deposition on the cathode, implying that most of the soot particles were positively charged. Soot deposit on the cathode linearly increased and was saturated with respect to the strength of the applied voltage. The possibility of applying an AC voltage to enhance the particle coagulation was then investigated and the efficiency of the size control was checked with transmission electron microscope photographs. For the amplitude of 2 kV AC field, primary (spherical) soot particle size decreased from 30 ~ 40 nm to around 20 nm when the frequency of the applied AC voltage was 60 Hz and higher. Collisions between the soot particles in such a selected AC condition could lead to the formation of much bigger agglomerates of roughly 1-5 .mu.m in size.

The effects of combustion instability on flow structure and flame dynamics with the inlet configurations in a model gas turbine combustor were investigated using large eddy simulation (LES). A G-equation flamelet model was employed to simulate the unsteady flame behaviors. As a result of mean flow field, the change of divergent half angle($\alpha$) at combustor inlet results in variations in the size and shape of the central toroidal recirculation (CTRZ) as well as the flame length by changing corner recirculation zone (CRZ). The case of ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$ show smaller size and upstream location of CTRZ than those of $90^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ by the development of higher swirl velocity. The flame length in the case of ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$ is shorter than other cases, while the case of ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$ yields the longest flame length due to the decrease of effective reactive area with the absence of CRZ. Through the analysis of pressure fluctuation, it was identified that the case of ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$ shows the largest damping effect of pressure oscillation in all configurations and brings in the noise reduction of 2.97dB, compared to that of ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$ having the largest pressure oscillation. These reasons were discussed in detail through the analysis of unsteady phenomena related to recirculation zone and flame surface. Finally the effects of flame-acoustic interaction were evaluated using local Rayleigh parameter.
Flame propagation along vortex tube was experimentally investigated. The vortex tube was generated by the ejection of propane from a nozzle through a single stroke motion of a speaker and the ignition was induced from a single pulse laser. Non-reactive flow fields were visualized using shadow technique. From these images, vortex ring size and translational velocity were measured in order to determine the ignition time and position. Flame structure and flame speed were measured using high speed CCD camera. Flame speed was accelerated during the initial stage of flame kernel growth, and reached near constant value during steady propagation period. Near the completion of propagation, flame speed was decelerated and then extinguished. Flame speed along the non-premixed vortex tube was found to be linearly proportional to circulation, which was similar to that of the flame propagation along premixed vortex ring. Ignition position minimally affects the propagation characteristics. These imply that flame is propagating along the maximum speed locus expected to be along stoichiometric contour and also support the existence of tribrachial flames.
New concept spark plug was developed to study its influence on the combustion characteristics of SI engine. It has pre-ignition chamber at the lower end of spark plug and flame hole, in which fresh mixture gas can be put in through the flame hole without any fuel supply system. This spark plug was tested in a single cylinder engine dynamometer for different air fuel ratio to measure the fuel consumption rate, emission gases, and MBT timing. And constant volume combustion chamber was made to understand flame characteristics of spark plug. New spark plug induced fast burn compared to the conventional spark plug and its effects were increased in lean air fuel ratio. Pre-ignition chamber spark plug with 5 holes which had adjusted size was more stable and effective in combustion performance than pre-ignition chamber spark plug with 1 hole. And its effects showed larger differences in lean air fuel ratio than stoichiometric condition. Flame kernel and flame growth process of conventional spark plug and pre-ignition chamber spark plug studied by flame visualization of schlieren method.
When large size nozzle with low jet velocity is used, the buoyancy effect arises from the density difference among propane, air, and burnt gas. Flame characteristics in such buoyant jets have been investigated numerically to elucidate the effect of buoyancy on lifted flames. It has been demonstrated that the cold jet has circular cone shape since upwardly injected propane jet decelerates and forms stagnation region. In contrast to the cold flow, the reacting flow with a lifted flame has no stagnation region by the buoyancy force induced from the burnt gas. To further illustrate the buoyancy effect on lifted flames, the reacting flow with buoyancy is compared with non-buoyant reacting flow. Non-buoyant flame is stabilized at much lower height than the buoyant flame. At a certain range of fuel jet velocities and fuel dilutions. an oscillating flame is demonstrated numerically showing that the height of flame base and tip vary during one cycle of oscillation. Under the same condition. non-buoyant flame exhibits only steady lifted flames. This confirms the buoyancy effect on the mechanism of lifted flame oscillation.
Typical boiler system consists of combustion chamber and heat exchanger in one housing, therefore the size of boiler system is large and the heat exchanging efficiency becomes low. At these boiler systems, because the combustible mixture fires as free flame in the combustion chamber, consequently the combusted hot gas heats the heat exchanger only as conductive and convective heat transfer. The present Porous Ceramic Burner concept is that combustion process is occurred at the gaps of the porous ceramic materials, and the heat exchanger is placed in the same porous materials. Therefore we can reduce the boiler size, and we can also use radiative heat transfer from ceramic material with conductive and convective heat transfer from combusted gas throwing the porous materials. The purpose of this study is to search the flame stability ranges at different fuel flow rate and excess air ratio burning in the $Al_2O_3$ ceramic balls. We found out the stable excess air ratio range on given combustion intensity. And we can get clean porous ceramic combustion results compared with free flame.

The evolution of silica aggregate particles in coflow diffusion flames has been studied experimentally using light scattering and thermophoretic sampling techniques. The measurements of scattering cross section from $90^{\circ}$ light scattering have been utilized to calculate the aggregate number density and volume fraction using with combination of measuring the particle size and morphology through the localized sampling and a TEM image analysis. Aggregate or particle number densities and volume fractions were calculated using Rayleigh-Debye-Gans and Mie theory for fractal aggregates and spherical particles, respectively. Of particular interests are the effects of flame temperature on the evolution of silica aggregate particles. As the flow rate of $H_2$ increases, the primary particle diameters of silica aggregates have been first decreased, but, further increase of $H_2$ flow rate causes the diameter of primary particles to increase and for sufficiently larger flow rates, the fractal aggregates finally become spherical particles. The variation of primary particle size along the upward jet centerline and the effect of burner configuration have also been studied.
