  • The tribrachial flame in laminar coflow jet has been investigated experimentally with unsteady propagating condition. In this experiment, we found that the tribrachial point has an angle of flame surface because the location of tribrachial point is not on the base point of flame but on the inclined surface of flame. This angle of Flame surface at tribrachial point are increasing when the flame is approaching to the nozzle exit. With considering this angle of flame surface, the radial velocity gradient can affect flame propagation speed by increasing flow-stretch effect. The propagation speed of tribrachial flame was calculated with including above stretch effect. The speed decreases with increasing velocity gradient due to the increment of stretch effect.

  • Spud angle( ${\alpha}$ ) and fuel injection angle ( ${\beta}$ ) have strong influence on spud type gas burner combustion. A wide range of flame stability is shown at ${\alpha}=60^{\circ}$, but at ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$ is narrow. Optimum condition of flame stability swirl angle( ${\gamma}$ ) is $40^{\circ}$. At condition of ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$ flame shape is relatively narrow and long, on the other hand, at ${\alpha}=60^{\circ}$ flame is wide and short. Regardless of spud angle, maximum flame temperature shows in the range of Z=200mm and R=0mm. Flame temperature, on the whole, is high at ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$. At ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$, NOx emission is higher than other conditions that may be concerned with flame temperature. At ${\beta}=60^{\circ}$ and ${\gamma}=40^{\circ}$, NOx emission is reduced due to fuel injection angle.

  • In order to elucidate the effects of positive pressure gradient on flame properties, structure and stabilization, an experimental study is made on turbulent diffusion flame stabilized by a circular cylinder in a divergent duct flow. A commercial grade gaseous propane is injected from two slits on the rod as fuel. In this paper, stabilization, characteristics and flame structure are examined by varying the divergent angle of duct. Temperature, ion current and Schlieren photographs were measured. It is found that critical divergent angle is expected to be about 8 ~ 12 degree through blow-off velocity pattern to divergent angle and the positive pressure gradient influences the flame temperature, intensity of ion current and eddy structure behind the rod. With the increase of divergent angle, typical temperature of recirculation zone is low but intensity of ion current is high in shear layer behind rod. Energy distributions of fluctuating temperature and ion current signals turn up low frequency corresponding to large scale eddies but high frequency corresponding to small scale eddies as well as low with the increase of divergent angle. Therefore the flame structure becomes a typical distributed-reacting flame.

  • Flame spread velocity to virgin surface fuel bed on a ground slope increases as the flame gets closer to the slope according to the change of a ground slope angle. The existing studies have generally adopted the theory that flame gets closer to the slope as the slope angle increases, without considering the change of flame tilt against the slope. In this study, experiments were made on the actual characteristics of the flame on slopes of various angles, and as a result, this study offers the flame tilt equation according to the slope angle, and derive correlation between flame tilt and flame spread velocity on slope conditions.

  • The diagnostic used to observe the early flame development was a fiber optic spark plug, which enabled measurement of the flame front arrival times on a cycle-to-cycle basis. The data obtained with this fiber optic spark plug were analyzed to obtain two parameters to describe the behavior of the flame kernel : an expansion speed and a convection velocity. In addition, synchronized cylinder pressure data were taken to compare with the fiber optic spark plug data on a cyclic basis. Heat release analysis was performed on the cylinder pressure data to obtain the mass burning profile of the charge for each cycle. There was a significant correlation observed in the initial flame duration and the kernel expansion speed with dwell angle.

  • An experimental study on downwardly spreading flame over slanted electrical wire, which is insulated by Polyethylene (PE), was conducted with applied AC electric fields. The result showed that the flame spread rate decreased initially with increase in inclination angle of wire and then became nearly constant. The flame shape was modified significantly with applied AC electric field due to the effect of ionic wind. Such a variation in flame spread rate could be explained by a thermal balance mechanism, depending on flame shape and slanted direction of flame. Extinction of the spreading flame was not related to angle of inclination, and was described well by a functional dependency upon the frequency and voltage at extinction.

  • Flame behaviors and interaction between pilot and main flames in a dual swirl combustor were investigated experimentally and numerically. Under the condition of fixed swirl angle of $45^{\circ}$ for main flame, the swirl angle of pilot flame, total heat release rate and equivalence ratio of main flame were used as major parameters. As a result, detailed flame stability diagram of dual swirl combustor was identified in terms of 5 flame modes with the changes in total heat release rate and equivalence ratio of main flame. It was found that the swirl angle of pilot flame plays the most important role in the changes in flame location and overall flow structure inside the combustor, and thus leads to the significant change in the interaction between pilot and main flame.

  • The wind is very important factor in forest fire spread. Flame spread has a change through wind pattern change in forest fire. In order to analyze the forest fire flame spread rate, change of flame tilt depending on wind may be considering first. This is be cause the flame spread rate varies by the flame tilt changed due to transfer of heat. Especially, as wind speed grow, flame gets closer to surface, heat transfer ratio increase, virgin fuel bed reaches ignition temperature more rapidly, and flame moves faster. This study deduces, through experiment and physical figure analysis, relations on the change behavior of flame tilt due to wind. The value of flame tilt angle calculated from the equation and the experiment value showed average error angle of $3.3^{\circ}$, which is relatively smaller than results of previous studies that used other coefficient. Froude number coefficient A can be calculated in the method provided in this research for estimation of flame tilt angle of virgin fuel bed with varying thermal properties. The research finding is expected to be applied to future studies on flame spread through numerical analysis of heat transfer.

  • A study has been conducted to investigate the effect of swirl angle in low swirl combustor. In this study, the employed swirl angles were $28^{\circ}$, $32^{\circ}$ and $37^{\circ}$. Direct flame photos show that the width of the flame is expanded and the length of the flame is shortened when swirl angle is increased. Also, as the swirl angle was increased, the flame stability region could be widened due to the expansion of lower flammable limit. Between 3 and 7kW, CO emissions was below 10 ppm and NOx emissions was also below 27 ppm at $O_2$ 15% basis over the lean burning range of 0.6 < ${\Phi}$ < 0.9. From this investigation of stability expansion effect and emission performance, it was identified that the swirl angle $37^{\circ}$ is most suitable swirling condition in the low swirl model combustor.

  • Recently, Flat flame burners are hilighted in high-load burners. Our study contains flow field analysis of a flat flame burner. In this paper, We analyzed the direction and magnitude of the velocity in a round tile type burner with swirl angles, $10^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;50^{\circ}$. In the case of swirl angle $10^{\circ}$, because axial momentum is larger than radial momentum, Recirculation region was weakly developed. In the case of swirl angle $50^{\circ}$, Flow in front of the tile is distributed for radial direction. And Recirculation region is large. So, We expect that the radiation can be transmitted from tiles and the recirculation region may cause $NO_x$ reduction.
