Many studies using the assumed mode method have been found for the free vibration analysis of stiffened plate with known elastic boundary conditions. However many local structures such as tank edges and equipment foundations consist of connected structures and it is very difficult to find suitable elastic boundary conditions. In this study combined polynomials which satisfy simply and fixedly supported boundary conditions are proposed. The proposed method has been applied to tanks which bounded by bulkhead and a deck. The results of this study shows good agreements with these obtain by the FEA S/W(Patran/Nastran).
Automatic Transfer Crane is needed for automation of container terminal. It requires the control capability of exact position for loading/unloading job in yard. But it has the limitation of improvement because it has the operational environmental and its structural problems. It has the positioning errors caused by the deformation of rail, yawing motion of crane, wear of wheel, sliding motion between wheel and rail and so on. This study shows the calibration method of crane position by using the primitivity sensor and calibrating plate fixed on the ground.
Insoluble anodes of the Ta/Ir mixed metal oxide for electrodeposition of Ni-W alloy in ammoniacal citrate bath were prepared by thermal decomposition method. Ti plate was etched in boiling oxalic acid solution and coated with ethanol solution of $TaCl_{5}$ and $IrCl_4$ mixed in a fixed ratio, followed by drying and treating at various temperatures. The coating layer of these insoluble anode was characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD and DSC. The decomposition rate of citric acid in plating bath was determined by measuring the $CO_2$ gas evolved at the anodes with Gas Chromatography. Evolution of $CO_2$ gas from Ta/Ir oxide anodes decreased about 5% compared with that of Pt. The $CO_2$ gas evolution was increased with the amount of Ir-oxide in the coatings. The coatings which have more than 40% ratio of Ta content and heat-treated at the temperature higher than $400^{\circ}C$ showed better efficiency
In this paper, a composite material analysis program based on the finite element method(FEM) is used. The purpose of this study was to verify whether the composite material analysis program which developed as part of a project of development of softwares and educational contents for structural vibration and composite material analysis that can calculate how similar the macroscopic mechanical behavior of the composite materials actually. Because composite materials are generally anisotropic, analysis of composite laminate is used for the constitutive equations of orthotropic material. For convenience, the unit is ommited in all calculations. To verify the accuracy of the finite element method based program, the deflection and stress distribution of the simply supported composite material laminated plate subjected to a uniform load distribution is compared with exact solution. Size and properties of the composite material laminate used for analysis are fixed variables, and by changing the number of elements and the total thickness of the laminate is compared with the exact solution to the resulting value, respectively.
Nonlinear and forced oscillations of supported viscous droplet were focused in the present study. The droplet has a free contact line with solid plate and inviscid fluid. Natural frequencies of a pendant droplet have been investigated experimentally by imposing the acoustic wave while the frequency is being increased at a fixed amplitude. The evaporation was observed at atmosphere pressure. The droplet was recorded throughout the entire evaporation process and transient variations of the volume was measured. The evaporation process of oscillating droplet with thermofoil has been also observed to investigate analyzing the resonance effect on the thermal characteristics of droplet. It is found that a pendant droplet shows the resonant behaviors at each mode similar to the theoretical analysis. During imposing the acoustic wave, the pendant droplet makes a rotating motion in its longitudinal axis which is a new shape oscillation mode. The evaporation rate of a pendant droplet at resonant frequency is significantly enhanced.
In suspension bridges, the axial farces in the wires are transferred by side pressure on the semicircular face, and further from the strand shoe through rods to a base plate fixed to the massive concrete part of the anchor block. For prefabricated strands the most common way of anchoring is by socketing the ends of the strands. In this study, strand shoe and hanger socket are analyzed far various load conditions using Finite Element Method. The finite element models are built using MSC/PATRAN and analysis is carried out using MSC/NASTRAN. Results are again completely processed using MSC/PATRAN. From the results of the analysis, trends of deformation and stress distribution are reviewed and important factors to consider in the design of strand shoe and hanger socket are discussed.
Elements used in steel structures may be considered as an assembly of number of thin flat walls. Local buckling of these members can limit the buckling capacity of axial load resistance or flexural strength. We can avoid a premature failure, caused by effects of local buckling, by limiting the value of the wall slenderness which depend on its critical buckling stress. According to Eurocode 3, the buckling stress is calculated for an internal wall assuming that the latter is a simply supported plate on its contour. This assumption considers, without further requirement, that the two orthogonal walls to this wall are sufficiently rigid to constitute fixed supports to it. In this paper, we focus on webs of steel profiles that are internal walls delimited by flanges profiles. The objective is to determine, for a given web, flanges dimensions from which the latter can be considered as simple support for this web.
Electrorheological fluids (ERF) are suspensions which show an abrupt increase in rheological properties under electric fields. The rheological response is very rapid and reversible when the electric field is imposed and/or removed. Therefore, there are many practical applications using the ERF. The purpose of the present study is to examine the flow characteristics of ERF. First, the microscopic behavior of the ER suspension structure between two fixed parallel-plate brass electrodes applied dc high voltage for the stationary and flow of the ERF was investigated by flow visualization. The electrical and rheological properties of zeolite based ERF were reported.
In this study, we have investigated the effects of upstream rectangular winglet pair (RWP) on the heat/mass transfer coefficients in a dimple. Dimple print diameter was fixed at 20mm and the dimple depth was 4.0mm (0.4H). The dimple surface was coated with naphthalene for mass transfer experiment and the test plate was positioned at a rectangular straight duct whose aspect ratio (W/H) was 20. A rectangular winglet pair was positioned at y/d=-2.5. The RWP angle ($\beta$) was varied from $15^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$. The Reynolds number, based on the duct height (H), was 5,000. with changing the RWP angle ($\beta$), the induced vortices had different flow characteristics; longitudinal or transversal vortices. These variation of induced vortices affected on the heat/mass transfer characteristics in the dimple.
Numerical analysis of hydrodynamic performance of a movable submerged breakwater was carried out as an eco-friendly marine structure for coastal and harbor protection. Using boundary elements method with two-dimensional frequency-domain reflection and transmission coefficients and wave forces acting on the submerged flat plate were calculated with various submerged depths and respective motion allowable modes. The movable breakwater was found to be more efficient in wave-blocking than the fixed structure. Variation of reflection coefficients was significantly influenced by vertical motion of the body.
