  • Accurate and reliable tracking of train is essential for the train control system. The fixed block system which utilizes track circuit has been used widely for the detection of train position. As an alternative, the moving block system has the advantage over the fixed block system since it enables shorter headway and easier maintenance. This paper presents a new technique for the train tracking system which uses radio signal for the train position detection. The proposed algorithm uses the phase difference of arrival of radio signal for the detection of train position. Experimental verification of the algorithm is presented in the paper.

  • A signal system is critical point of transport capacity and train operation in urban rail transit. Today the moving block system by radio is taking place of the fixed block system by track circuit for efficiency and short headway in underground railway and right rail transit. In this study, assuming specification of a train, track and control system, the minimum headway on the moving block system and the fixed block system is researched for the maximum transport capacity.

  • In this paper, we propose a new deinterlacing algorithm based on motion estimation and compensation with variable block size. Motion compensated methods using a fixed block size tend to produce undesirable artifacts when there exist complicated motion and high frequency components. In the proposed algorithm, the initial block size of motion estimation is determined based on the existence of global motion. Then, the block is divided depending on block characteristics. Since motion compensated deinterlacing may not always provide satisfactory results, the proposed method also use an intrafield spatial deinterlacing. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides noticeable improvements compared to motion compensated deinterlacing with a fixed block size.

  • The paper reviews three Split Plot Designs (SPDs) of fixed factors, and those are SPD (RCBD, RCBD), SPD (CRD, RCBD) and SBD (Split Block Design). RCBD (Randomized Complete Block Design) and CRD (Completely Randomized Design) are used to deploy whole plot and sub plot. The models explained in this study are derived from random, crossed and nested models.

  • We designed a track circuit of Tag in-tag out type that can be used for light rails and monorails. This method is called RFID-Tag and it literally uses RFID-Tag and replaces a fixed track circuit and implements a moving block. The distance between RFID-Tags is set to the length of a train and thus a train is always in contact with one of the tags. A train runs in RFID-Tag in -RFID-Tag out type at all times and the distance between trains can be precisely controlled through the application of a moving block combined with the basic principle of a fixed block, which enables the continuous speed control and enhances the satisfaction of passengers. When constructing a track circuit using RFID-Tag the Tag in-tag out brings us the cost reduction and is more economical than the existing fixed track circuit in that sense and easy for installation and maintenance. The wireless communication between onboard and wayside makes the continuous control possible and can improve the control capacity of ATP/ATO by the implementation of a moving block on top of a fixed one.

  • The paper reviews gauge R&R studies by two-factor mixed models including random and fixed factors. The two-factor mixed models include restricted models and unrestricted models considering the interaction of two factors. This study also classifies the models according to the number of factors, and the combination of various factors such as random factor, fixed factor, block factor and repetition type.

  • Recently, The flexible moving block system in train operation has been introduced to the worldwide rail transportation markets. This paper is a comparative study of the conventional fixed block systems effects and the flexible moving block system on train operating time saving. Based on the literature review, the new algorithm is developed. It is to calculate the optimum headway time of the train. The proposed algorithm can overcome some of the existing algorithm problems, such as the limits of the data and unaware of the rail characteristic. The total travel time saving effect has been analyzed by applying the skip stop scheduling system to the each block system. The results of this study indicated that the total travel time is approximately 40% decreased and the schedule velocity is approximately 24% improved when the moving block system is applied. The results of this study could be used as a theoretical basis for the selection of rail signal system in Seoul's subway number 2 line.

  • In the Wyner-Ziv coding, compression performance highly depends on the quality of the side information since better quality of side information brings less channel noise and less parity bit. However, as decoder generates side information without any knowledge of the current Wyner-Ziv frame, it doesn't have optimal criterion to decide which block is more advantageous to generate better side information. Hence, in general, fixed block size motion estimation (ME) is performed in generating side information. By the fixed block size ME, the best coding performance cannot be attained since some blocks are better to be motion estimated in different block sizes. Therefore if there is a way to find appropriate ME block of each block, the quality of the side information might be improved. In this paper, we investigate the effects of variable block sizes of ME in generating side information.

  • In order to scheme the optimal assumption that satisfies the travel demand, it should be review the elements that affect on determining the headway, which are signal systems, line shape, vehicle(Light Rail Transit) performance, and so on. When applying the conventional signal systems, including Fixed Block System and Moving Block System, It was confirmed whether or not satisfy the requirements of target line with the way of a numerical formula reviewing and Train performance Simulation on the main line, station, depot, and so forth. Therefore, it should be used as references that decide target line and each sub-system after identifying the compliances for Minimum Headway to Moving Block System.

  • The bearing capacity of the wall against the eccentric load when the washbasin was attached on the ALC block wall was tested. Test methods are BS EN 14688 and BS 5234-2. Tests in accordance with BS EN 14688 showed that the holding capacity of steel was much stronger and more stable when HA-II (chemical anchor) was used than when the washbasin was fixed using HA-I (plastic anchor). As an experimental result according to the Annex K of BS 5234-2, the bearing capacity of ALC block wall corresponded to the "stage in which the force works(performance grade) 1,500N" for all of the cases where a washbasin is fixed using two types of the wall's dedicated anchors(HA-I and HA-II).
