Physical habitat assessment models based on Instream Flow Incremental Methodology have been developed as a decision making tool to estimate appropriate discharge for environmental flow and water use management. These models, however, require extensive knowledge on various academic disciplines, complicated input data, and empirical data. We propose a Simplified Habitat (SIMHAB) simulation model for the estimation of physical structure of fish habitat and environmental flow at the planning stage. SIMHAB is applied to a river system for which physical and ecological data are available, and its applicability is investigated. Simulated results appeared to be similar to field survey data and those of such models as PHABSIM and River2D. However, SIMHAB requires much less input data. As such, the proposed model, SIMHAB can easily be applicable to river restoration projects including designing of physical habitat, estimation of environmental flow, and water resource management.
Habitat environment, age and feeding ecology of Gobiobotia macrocephala were investigated to provide baseline data for ecological characteristics and recovery in the Seom River at Heungho- ri, Buron-myeon, Wonju-si, Gangwon-do, Korea from 2010 to 2011. G. macrocephala inhabited 10~40 cm in water depth, 8~20 cm bottom size and 40~120 cm/sec in current velocity, and pebble floor were factors to be important for inhabit density. Age group of G. macrocephala in May estimated from the standard length indicated that the 28~42 mm group is 1 year old, the 43~58 mm group is 2 years old, the 59~69 mm group is 3 years old and the 69~85 mm group is more than 4 years old, and the female was 4~10 mm larger than the male. G. macrocephala did mainly feeding with nocturnal fishes between 00 h to 06 h, and they fed mainly Trichoptera (57.7%), Diptera (26.0%) and Ephemeroptera (16.3%). And their small juvenile fed mainly Ephemeroptera and Diptera, however, they ate mainly Trichoptera while growing to adult fish.
In 2020 and 2022, the habitat of brown trout (Salmo trutta) was investigated in the Soyanggang River in Chuncheon, Gangwon province. As a result of the fish survey, A total of 43 individuals brown trout were identified. The total length of brown trout was widely confirmed from 60 cm or more to less than 10 cm. In January 2020, sperm release and spawn were observed in male and female confirmed at the St. 1. Brown trout were identified stably settled in the Soyanggang River and continues to live. In addition, benthic macroinvertebrates that can act as food sources of brown trout and abundantly inhabited. The riverbed structure is evenly composed of fine gravel and gravel, which constitutes the conditions necessary for habitat and spawning. However, the spawning grounds, spawned eggs and hatched fry have not yet been clearly identified, so continuous research is needed.
We investigated the ichthyofauna and fish community structure of the Mudeungsan National Park, Korea from 2014 to 2016 to prepare a conservation plan. We collected 21 species of 6 families collected from 8 survey stations through skimming nets and cast nets during the period. The dominant and subdominant species were Zacco temminckii (43.0%) and Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (15.1%), respectively. The other abundant species were Z. platypus (11.2%), Pungtungia herzi (10.1%), Squalidus gracilis majimae (8.9%), and Z. koreanus (4.5%). Among the fish collection, 13 species (61.9%) were Korean endemic species, but, endangered species and exotic species were not found. Similarity indices based on species composition and abundance showed the clear division of the fish community into two river systems (Yongsan River drainage system (St. 1-7) and Seomjin River drainage system (St. 8)). The Youngsan River system was further divided into the uppermost (St. 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7) and the upper-middle (St. 3 and 5) regions. The number of species appearing in a year was similar at 19 to 20 throughout the survey period. However, the individual number of fish in 2015 (2,670) was 20% less than that of 2014 (3,366) and 2016 (3,429), respectively. The probable reason for this decline is the rapid decline of stream level in 2015 compared to the other years. During the survey period, river works were undergoing at 3 out of 8 stations, having created disturbance in fish habitat and especially impacted on benthic fishes.
In this study, we analyzed fish compositions and ecological characteristics such as trophic guilds and tolerance guilds in association with water quality characteristics in Masan Reservoir during November 2008. Total number of species were 12 species (6 families) and the dominant species were Zacco platypus, Hemiculter eigenmanni, and Pseudorasbora parva. We found three Korean endemic species and one exotic species, Carassius cuvieri. According to the analysis of ecological indicator characteristics, relative proportion of tolerant and omnivore species was 98% of the total indicating that probably, the fauna was influenced by physical habitat disturbance and physicochemical degradations. Fish distribution analysis along with littoral zone showed that the most fishes (${\sim}$95%) were observed in the littoral zone where emerged macrophytes were well developed. Also, substrate analysis indicated that the most species were found near silt area (11 species, 91.7%), so that the significant differences were found between the substrate types. Analysis of water quality indicated that concentrations of total phosphorus (TP) and chlorophyll-a (ChI-a) as a lake trophic indicator were judged as eutrophic states, respectively and COD as an indicator of organic matter pollution averaged 10.9 mg $L^{-1}$. Based on the water quality, this system were influenced by the nutrient enrichments and organic matter. The degradations of water quality in Masan Reservoir resulted in trophic compositions of fish (increase of omnivore species) and the dominance of tolerant fish. This Monitoring data may contribute changes of fish fauna and compositions in relation to habitat modifications and chemical water quality degradations in the future.

This research is related to house entrance recognition of residents, who have long kept the entrance without a closing door in Eoeun village, Geumho, Keongbook. The purpose of the research was to interpret the recognition of a house entrance in Eoeun village with the theories of cultural ecology. Final results suggest the belief for all the inhabitant\`s welfare through anthropological adaptation to habitat. The fish in the Geumho River had sought the shelter from the heavy rain in summer. The Eoeun forest at the entrance of the village provided good shelter for the fish. The Eoeun residents thought that the safe shelter fur the river fish is also semantic for the people. They believed that if the fish could not find shelter, i.e., the Eoeun forest and left, the village could be not safe for their life. Therefore, even the entrance of house should be structurely opened for the fish shelter in a symbolic sense. The entrance without a closing door has implied that their life should depend upon their natural environments because they have believed that till now there have been no considerable accidents in the village.

We compared the structure of fish community and condition of major fish species in Lake Chungpyung and Lake Paldang, which are relatively shallow, meso-eutrophic, cascading dam reservoirs on the North Han River. Two lakes have wide littoral zone in the lakeside providing similarly good habitat for fishes, whereas fishery and water recreational activities such as motorboating, water skiing are allowed in Lake Chungpyung but are prohibited in Lake Paldang. The average lengths of large size fishes in Lake Chungpyung are shorter than those of same species in Lake Paldang, resulting in the slight distortion of generation distribution of those species in Lake Chungpyung, possibly owing to the active fishery such as fixed shore net fishing, gill net fishing and angling. Meanwhile the condition of fishes represented by the length-weight relationship of fish species did not show the significant differences between two lakes and showed normal condition. To evaluate the impact of physical disturbance such as loud noise and turbulent wave from water recreational activities to fishes precisely, further studies including physiological responses to stress an spawing activity should be needed.
Objectives: We aimed to investigate the species composition of fish and benthic macroinvertebrates in the Namgang Dam reservoir and assess the reservoir's ecological quality. Methods: Fish and benthic macroinvertebrates were seasonally sampled around the Namgang Dam reservoir from October 2013 to September 2014. Results: A total of 970 fish specimens were collected for this survey, including 4 orders, 14 families, and 25 species. Fourteen endemic species were observed, including Coreoleuciscus splendidus. The most observed among the endemic species caught was Zacco koreanus (14.4%). A total of 9,093 benthic macroinvertebrates, including 51 families and 92 species, were also found. The predominant species in the study area was Chironomidae sp. 1. Diplonychus esakii, whose habitat is distribution-specific as designated by the Korean National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), were also observed. A total of 386 specimens were collected of the invasive alien species Lepomis macrochirus, and the percentage of Lepomis macrochirus and Micropterus salmoides made up 42.0% of all specimens collected in the area. Conclusion: The mean ecological score of the benthic macroinvertebrate community (ESB) ranged between 24 and 40, which indicates that the environmental condition of the target sites is somewhat poor. Based on the results of this research, building habitats for benthic macroinvertebrates should be considered, and extermination plans for invasive alien fish species should be prepared.
To secure water resources, dams are normally constructed on the upper - middle part of streams, and it generates physical disturbances such as habitat alteration and stream fragmentation. Such construction can restrict movement of aquatic organisms, especially for freshwater fish which is one of top predator in aquatic ecosystem, and cause genetic fragmentation and community change. In this study, to investigate impact of habitat alteration after dam construction on freshwater fish, we monitored fish community changes, and compared fish fauna between dam reservoir and inflows. Additionally, movement characteristics and habitat boundaries of four species were identified by radio telemetry method. The study was conducted in the Gunwi Dam which was constructed in December 2010. Radio telemetry was applied to Pungtungia herzi, Zacco platypus (living lotic and lentic), Silurus asotus (lentic preferred species) and Zacco koreanus (lotic preferred species). The number of species was remarkably decreased (4 family, 10 species) comparing with before the dam construction (7 family, 15 species). Specifically, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Niwaella multifasciata, Liobagrus mediadiposalis, Coreoperca herzi and Odontobutis platycephala that inhabit in the lotic environment were not collected in the study area. A total of 8 species were caught in both the dam reservoir and tributaries except 2 species (C. auratus and S. asotus). Sorenson's similarity between the reservoir and its tributaries was high (0.842). All of the radio tagged species stayed in the reservoir except S. asotus which moved to the tributary. These species mainly utilized the shallow littoral zone as a habitat. These results could be useful as a baseline data for efficient management of fishes in lakes.
The spatial distribution characteristic of fish community were investigated at the 10 habitat types in the Nonsan stream from August, 2008 to June, 2009. The collected species during the surveyed period were 26 species belong to 6 families. Korean endemic species were Sarcocheilichthys nigripinnis morii, Squalidus japonicus coreanus, Hemiculter eigenmanni, Pseudobagrus koreanus, and Odontobutis interrupta which showed 19.2% ratio of total species. Dominant species was Zacco platypus, and subdominant species was Tridentiger brevispinis. Dominant species according to habitat types were Micropterus salmoides(substrate type pool and rock type pool), Lepomis macrochirus(channel connected pool and channel unconnected pool/abandoned type pool), T. brevispinis(channel unconnected pool/overflow type and run) and Z. platypus(riffle, meander type pool, side channel, and dam type pool). As a results of community analysis in side channel, diversity index showed relatively high values, indicating that habitat types in the Nonsan stream have relatively stable community structure. Bray-curtis cluster analysis indicated that the meander type pool and riffle showed the most similar values(80.8%). Moreover, cluster and principal component analysis were classified as 2 groups(lotic and lentic habitats).
