This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary lipid source and level on growth performance, blood parameters, fatty acid composition and flesh quality of sub-adult olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. Eight experimental diets were formulated to contain 5% squid liver oil (SLO), 5% linseed oil (LO), 5% soybean oil (SO), a mixture of 1% squid liver oil, 2% linseed oil and 2% soybean oil (MIX), no lipid supplementation with high protein level (LL-HP), 10% squid liver oil (HL-SLO), a mixture of 1% squid liver oil, 4.5% linseed oil and 4.5% soybean oil (HL-VO), and 1% squid liver oil with high starch level (LL-HC), respectively. Two replicate groups of fish (average initial weight of 296 g) were fed the diets for 17 wks. After 5 wks, 11 wks and the end of the feeding trial, five fish from each tank were randomly sampled for analysis of body composition. At the end of the feeding trial, final mean weight of fish fed the LL-HP diet was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of fish fed the HL-VO diet, but did not differ significantly from those of fish fed the SLO, LO, SO, MIX, HL-SLO and LL-HC diets. Fish fed the LL-HP diet showed significantly higher feed efficiency than fish fed the LO, HL-SLO and HL-VO diets. Feed efficiency of fish fed the LO, SO and MIX diets were similar to those of fish fed the SLO and HL-SLO diets. Fish fed the HL-SLO diet showed significantly higher total cholesterol content in plasma compared with other diets. Fatty acid composition of tissues was reflected by dietary fatty acid composition. The highest linoleic (LA) and linolenic acid (LNA) contents in the dorsal muscle were observed in fish fed the SO and LO diets, respectively, regardless of feeding period. The highest eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) content in the dorsal muscle was observed in fish fed the LL-HP and LL-HC diets after 11 and 17 weeks of feeding, respectively. Fish fed the SLO and HL-SLO diets showed higher docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content than that of other treatments after 11 and 17 weeks of feeding, respectively. Dietary inclusion of vegetable oils reduced n-3 HUFA contents in the dorsal muscle and liver of fish. The n-3 HUFA contents in tissues of fish fed the SLO and HL-SLO diets were higher than those of fish fed other diets, except for the LL-HP and LL-HC diets. Hardness, gel strength, chewiness and cohesiveness values of dorsal muscle in fish were significantly affected by dietary lipid source. The results of this study indicate that fish oil in fish meal based diets for sub-adult olive flounder could be replaced by soybean oil and linseed oil without negative effects on growth and feed utilization.

A feeding trial was conducted to determine the optimum dietary protein requirement of young far eastern catfish Silurus asotus. Five isocaloric diets were formulated to contain graded levels of protein (35, 40, 45, 50, and 55%). Triplicate groups of fish (initial body weight of 44 g) were hand-fed to apparent satiation for 9-weeks. Weight gain and specific growth rate of fish fed 55% protein diet were significantly higher than those of fish fed 35 and 40% protein diets, but not significantly different from those of fish fed 45 and 50% protein diets. The feed efficiency of fish fed 50 and 55% protein diets was significantly higher than that of fish fed 35, 40 and 45% protein diets. The protein efficiency ratio of fish fed 40% protein diet was significantly higher than that of fish fed 45, 50 and 55% protein diets, but not significantly different from that of fish fed 35% protein diet. The dietary protein level significantly affected whole body lipid and moisture contents. The results of this study suggest that the 45% protein in the diet is optimal for maximum growth of young far eastern catfish weighing in the range of 44 to 227 g.
Background: An 8-week feeding trial was designed to evaluate the potential of yellow mealworm (MW; Tenebrio molitor) as a locally available nutrient-rich feedstuff for rainbow trout fry (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Methods: Triplicate groups of fish (mean ± SE; 1.11 ± 0.01 g) were assigned to each of the five isonitrogenous and isocaloric practical diets containing graded level of a full fat MW (0, 7, 14, 21, and 28%) at the expense of fish meal (designated as MW0, MW7, MW14, MW21, and MW28, respectively). Results: Fish growth performance in terms of weight gain and specific growth rate significantly increased with increasing dietary MW level up to 14% and then declined when dietary MW levels further increased to 28%. Significantly higher protein efficiency ratio and lower feed conversion ratio were found in fish fed with diets containing MW compared to fish fed the control MW0. Myeloperoxidase activity was significantly higher in fish fed MW7 diet compared to fish fed the MW0 diet. Fish fed the MW14 and MW28 diets had significantly higher lysozyme activities than those fed the MW0 diet. Conclusions: Overall, the efficacy of MW as promising alternative to fish meal in practical diets for rainbow trout fry has been proved not only in relation to growth rates and feed utilization, but also from the viewpoint of immunopotentiation effects.
To reduce anti-nutritional factors in plant protein sources for fish meal replacement in fish feeds, cottonseed and soybean meal (CS) were fermented with Aspergillus oryzae. A feeding trial was conducted to verify the effects of fermented CS (FCS) with phytase supplementation on gossypol detoxification, phosphorus digestibility, antioxidant activity, and growth performance of juvenile olive flounder over 10 weeks. Four diets were formulated to replace 0, 30, or 40% fish meal protein with CS or FCS (designated as CS0, CS30, FCS30P, and FCS40P). Phytase (1,000 FTU/kg) was added to FCS30P and FCS40P. The microbial fermentation significantly increased dietary total polyphenols and consequently led to higher DPPH radical-scavenging activities in fish feed and fish tissue. Dietary and liver gossypol concentrations were dramatically decreased by the fermentation process. Phosphorus digestibility was significantly increased in fish fed the FCS40P diet. However, growth performance decreased in fish fed FCS diets. This study demonstrates that the fermentation process and phytase supplementation can improve the phosphorus availability of plant protein sources in fish. The fermentation of CS by A. oryzae could increase antioxidant activities in feed and fish and effectively degrade toxic gossypol in cottonseed meal.

The effects of dietary nutrient composition on compensatory growth of grower olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) under different feeding regimes at suboptimal temperature were determined. Four hundred five fish weighing 271.2 g were distributed into 27 300 L flow-through tanks (15 fish per tank). Nine treatments were prepared in triplicate: fish were hand-fed with control (C) diet for 12 weeks (12WF-C); four groups of fish were starved for 1 week and then fed C, high-protein (HP), high-lipid (HL), or combined high-protein and high-lipid (HPL) diets for 11 weeks; these groups are referred to as 11WF-C, 11WF-HP, 11WF-HL, and 11WF-HPL, respectively. Four other groups of fish were starved for 2 weeks and then fed C, HP, HL, and HPL diets for 10 weeks; these groups are referred to as 10WF-C, 10WF-HP, 10WF-HL, and 10WF-HPL, respectively. Weight gain and specific growth rate of fish from 12WF-C group were greater than those of fish from 11WF-C, 11WF-HP, 11WF-HL, 10WF-C, 10WFHP, and 10WF-HL groups, but not different from those of fish from 11WF-HPL and 10WF-HPL groups. Feed-efficiency ratio of fish from 12WF-C, 11WF-HP, 11WF-HPL, 10WF-HL, and 10WF-HPL groups was higher than that of fish in 11WF-C, 11WF-HL, 10WF-C, and 10WF-HP groups. The results of this study demonstrated that grower olive flounder subjected to 1- or 2-week feed deprivation were able to achieve full compensatory growth at suboptimal temperature only when fed HPL diet.
Prolactin (PRL) plays an important role in freshwater (FW) osmoregulation by preventing the loss of ions and the uptake of water in fish. Growth hormone (GH) promotes acclimation to seawater (SW) in several teleosts. We acclimated rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss weighting $68.2{\pm}16.6$, $138.3{\pm}24$, and $287.5{\pm}42.1$ g in separate experiments to SW under slow-acclimation (SSW) or acute-acclimation (ASW) conditions, and then examined the PRL and GH mRNA levels using the real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The PRL mRNA levels in all three experimental groups decreased significantly with both the SSW and ASW treatments, as compared to a control group kept in FW for 30 days. The GH mRNA levels increased with ASW in the largest fish, whereas the levels in the other groups did not change significantly. The mortality rate of the largest fish was lower than for the other groups, whereas the growth rate among the three experimental groups did not differ significantly. The growth rate of the ASW group was highest for the smallest fish. These results suggest that SW acclimation is associated with the gene expression levels of PRL and GH in relatively large rainbow trout. In addition, the fish mortality and growth rate on FW-SW transfer seem to be related to body weight, and the SW acclimation method may be applied to the hatcheries industry.
This study determined the level of fermented soybean meal (FSM) that could be substituted for fish meal in the diet for parrot fish Oplegnathus fasciatus. Fish meal (FM) was used the sole protein source in the control diet. FSM was substituted for 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% of the fish meal in the experimental diets. The FSM resulted in increased crude protein, crude fat, and crude ash, but decreased crude fiber. The methionine and tryptophan contents in the FSM increased, while lysine and threonine decreased. The 18:2n-6 fatty acid content decreased from 55.30% to 28.67%. Fermentation increased 20:5n-3 (EPA) and 22:6n-3 (DHA) by 2.03% and 15.54%, respectively, although the differences were not significant. Based on growth performance, we concluded that FSM could replace up to 60% of FM for the maximum growth of juvenile parrot fish.

Triploid fish have attracted the attention of fish farmers owing to of their larger cell size compared to that of diploid fish and their ability to utilize the energy required for sexual maturation for growth instead. However, the effect of increased growth in triploid fish has shown varying results. Therefore, this study aimed to compare growth between diploid and triploid starry flounders and diploid and triploid hybrid juveniles (starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus ♀×stone flounder, Kareius bicoloratus ♂) based on breeding water temperature to investigate the effect of increased growth in triploid fishes. The experiment was performed by categorizing the water temperature as high temperature (EXP. 1, 14.5-23.5℃) and low temperature (EXP. 2, 6.4-13.3℃) based on the optimal water temperature for starry flounder breeding. In EXP. 1, the growth of starry flounder triploids and hybrid triploids was significantly higher than that of diploids. However, in EXP. 2 the weight gain and specific growth rate of the starry flounder triploid were higher, and the growth of starry flounder was higher than that of the hybrids.
Effects of vitamin E, C and/or glycyrrhizin in the artificially oxidized feed on the growth and on the resistance aganist Edwardsiella tarda infection to Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were examined. The thiobarbitric acid (TBA) values of the oxidized feed were $80\~88$ mg/kg. The fingerling fish were fed the oxidized feed with or without the mixture of vitamin E (50 mg), C (60 mg) and/or glycyrrhizin ($25\~200$ mg) per 100 g of the feed for 7 weeks. The fish fed the oxidized feed with vitamin E, C and/or glycyrrhizin showed better growth than the fish fed the oxidized feed only. But growth rates among the fish fed different amount of vitamins or glycyrrhizin mixed feed were not different. Glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) levels in the serum increased only in the fish which were fed oxidized feed without vitamin E, C and/or glycyrrhizin. With the fish artificially infected with E. tarda: they showed low survival rate when fed oxidized feed and oxidized feed plus 25 mg glycyrrhizin per 100 g feed. The fish fed oxidized feed plus vitiamin E, C and/or glycyrrhizin ($50\~200$ mg/100 g), showed higher survival. These results show that the supplementation of oxidized lipids depress the growth and liver activity, while the addition of vitamin E, C and/or glycyrrhizin in the diet accelerated the growth, liver activity, and the resistance to E. tarda infection.
