  • The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of $\beta$-1,3 glucan and feed stimulants(BAISM) as a feed additive for juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Eight experimental diets supplemented with $\beta$-1,3 glucan and feed stimulants at 0%, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.05% + Baism 0.45%, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.05% + Baism 0.95%, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.10% + Baism 0.90%, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.10% + Baism 1.90%, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.15% + Baism 1.35%, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.15% + Baism 2.85% and $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.30% + Baism 2.70% of diets as a dry-matter(DM) basis were prepared. Three replicate groups of fish averaging 9.2 $\pm$ 0.1g (Mean $\pm$ SD) were randomly distributed in each aquarium as a group of 15 fish and fed one of eight experimental diets for seven weeks. After the feeding trial, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.10% + Baism 0.90%, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.10% + Baism 1.90% diets had a higher weight gain (WG), feed efficiency(FE), specific growth rate(SGR) and protein efficiency ratio(PER) than did fish fed 0%, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.05% + Baism 0.45%, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.05% + Baism 0.95%, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.15% + Baism 2.85% and $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.30% + Baism 2.70% (P<0.05). however, there was no significant difference among fish fed $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.05% + Baism 0.45%, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.05% + Baism 0.95%, $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.15% + Baism 2.85% and $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.30% + Baism 2.70%(P>0.05). and $\beta$-1,3 glucan 0.10% + Baism 0.90% diets had a higher peak value of CL(Chemiluminescence) and lysozyme activity, than did fish fed the other diets (P<0.05). These results indicated that dietary sipplementation of $\beta$-1, 3 glucan and Baism affected growth, feed efficiency, specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio, Peak value of CL and Lysozyme activity, and the optimum dietary supplementation level of $\beta$-1, 3 glucan and Baism as a feed additive could be approximately $\beta$-1, 3 glucan 0.10% + Baism 0.90% of diet in juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus).

  • Two feeding experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of fermented cactus fruit (Opuntia ficusindica) fluid (FCFF) as a feed additive to a commercial diet on the growth of red sea bream, Pagrus major, and to determine an effective dose. FCFF was prepared by mixing crushed cactus fruit with a starch solution and commercially available microorganisms for 2 weeks at room temperature. Three triplicate groups of red sea bream had initial mean weights of 84.1 g (Exp-1) and 5.1 g (Exp-2) and were fed experimental diets containing 0%, 1%, and 5% FCFF for 2 months (Exp-1) and 0%, 0.2%, 0.5%, and 1% FCFF for 3 months (Exp-2), respectively. In experiment 1, the mean body weight of fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF was significantly higher (P<0.05) than that of fish fed the diet without FCFF. The survival rate was highest in fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF, although the difference was not statistically significant. The feed gain ratio (FGR), specific growth rate (SGR), and condition factor (CF) values of fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF were higher than those of fish in the other dietary groups that received lower levels of FCFF. The daily feeding rate (DFR) of fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF was slightly lower but not statistically different than the DFR values of fish in the other dietary groups. In experiment 2, the final mean body weight of fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF was significantly (P<0.05) higher than the mean weight of fish in the control group. The FGR, SGR, and CF values of fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF were better than the values from fish in the other dietary groups that received lower levels of FCFF, although the differences were not statistically significant. However, the DFR of fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF was lower than those of fish in the other groups. These results suggest that FCFF could be used as a feed additive in commercial fish food and a preferable level of supplementation is at least 1.0% in fingerling and young red sea bream.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the use of tuna by-product meal (TBM) as a substitute for fishmeal in juvenile Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) diets. Five isonitrogenous (52% crude protein) and isocaloric (4.9 kcal/g) diets were prepared. Control diet (Con) was formulated to contain brown fishmeal, whereas 25, 50, 75, and 100% of fishmeal was substituted with the same percentage of TBM in the TBM25, TBM50, TBM75, and TBM100 diets, respectively. Three replicate groups of fish (initial weight, $29.5{\pm}0.6g$) were fed one of the five diets for 12 weeks. The mean weight gain of fish fed the Con and TBM25 diets was significantly higher than that of fish fed the TBM100 diet (P < 0.05), but it was not significantly different from the weight gain of fish fed the TBM50 and TBM75 diets. The feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratios of fish fed the Con diet were significantly higher than those of fish fed the TBM100 diet (P < 0.05), but were not significantly different from those fed the TBM25, TBM50, and TBM75 diets. The TBM25, TBM50, TBM75, and TBM100 diets had significantly (P < 0.05) lower incidence cost and higher profit index than the Con diet. These results suggest that the tuna by-product meal used in this study could replace up to 75% of fishmeal protein in the diet without reducing growth and feed utilization in juvenile Korean rockfish weighing 29-53 g. By considering feed cost, the TBM 75 diet is recommendable for Korean rockfish farming.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different dietary lipid sources on the growth, feed utilization, body composition and tissue fatty acid profile of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. Five isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets were formulated by adding various lipid sources including soybean oil (SO), eicosapentaenoic acid triglyceride (EPATG) and ethyl ester (EPAEE) forms, docosahexaenoic acid triglycerides (DHATG) and a 1:1 blend of soybean oil and DHATG. Triplicate groups of fish ($6.8{\pm}0.01g$) were fed one of the experimental diets to apparent satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. Fish fed the DHATG diet had the highest growth, protein efficiency ratio and feed efficiency values which were significantly higher than those fed the SO and EPAEE diets. Whole body proximate composition and somatic parameters were not influenced by the dietary treatments. Muscle of fish fed with SO diets were rich in 18:1n-9, 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3, whereas those of fish fed with EPATG, EPAEE and DHATG diets were rich in n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA). These findings indicated that the inclusion of n-3HUFA oils in olive flounder feed could be beneficial for the fish while simultaneously increasing the concentration of beneficial n-3HUFA in fish fillets destined for the human consumer.

  • An 8-week feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate three types of squid Sepia esculenta liver powder (SLP) as a dietary protein source replacing fish meal (FM) in juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. To replace FM, six experimental diets were formulated with three types (A, B, C) of SLP at the 5 and 10%: SLP-A5, SLP-A10, SLP-B5, SLP-B10, SLP-C5, and SLP-C10. One control diet contained 100% FM as the main protein source and another was a commercial diet (Com). Fish with an average body weight of $22.8{\pm}0.4$ g ($mean{\pm}SD$) were allocated randomly to aquaria in groups of 20 fish and fed the experimental diets in triplicate to satiation. The weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) of fish fed the SLP-C10 diet were lower than those of fish fed the FM and SLP-B5 diets. No significant difference was observed in the WG and SGR among fish fed the diets other than SLP-C10. The feed efficiency (FE) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed each SLP diet did not differ from those fed the control diet. However, fish fed SLP-C5 and SLP-C10 had a lower FE and PER than the fish fed commercial, SLP-A5 and SLP-B5 diets. Each SLP diet except for SLP-C10 could replace up to 10% of FM for juvenile olive flounder. The results of this experiment provide information that will assist in formulating an inexpensive practical diet containing SLP for juvenile olive flounder.

  • Effect of dietary protein and lipid levels on compensatory growth of juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) was determined in suboptimal temperature ($13.4{\pm}1.42^{\circ}C$). Five hundred forty fish averaging 79.2 g were randomly distributed into 27 of 300 L flow-through tanks (20 fish/tank). Nine treatments were prepared in triplicate: fish were hand-fed with control (C) diet for 10 weeks (10WF-C); four fish groups were starved for 1 week and then fed with C, high protein (HP), high lipid (HL) and combined high protein and high lipid (HPL) diets for 9 weeks, referred to as 9WF-C, 9WF-HP, 9WF-HL, 9WF-HPL, respectively; and other four fish groups were starved for 2 weeks and then fed with C, HP, HL and HPL diets for 8 weeks, referred to as 8WF-C, 8WF-HP, 8WF-HL and 8WF-HPL, respectively. Weight gain and specific growth rate of fish in 9WF-HP, 9WF-HPL, 8WF-HP and 8WF-HPL treatments were higher than those of fish in 9WF-HL and 8WF-HL treatments. Feed efficiency of fish in 8WF-HP treatment was higher than that of fish in 9WF-C, 9WF-HL and 8WF-HL treatments. Protein efficiency ratio of fish in 10WF-C, 8WF-C, 8WF-HP and 8WF-HPL treatments was higher that that of fish in 9WF-HL and 8WF-HL treatments. Juvenile olive flounder subjected to 2-week feed deprivation could achieve full compensatory growth with dietary supplementation of protein or combined high protein and high lipid.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of various dietary lipid sources on the growth performance, body composition, and fatty acid profiles of juvenile fancy carp (Cyprinus carpio var. koi). Three replicate groups of fish (initial mean body weight, 15.1±0.18 g) were fed one of five experimental diets containing fish oil (SLO), soybean oil (SO), linseed oil (LO), lard (LA), or a mixture of SLO, SO, and LO (Mix) for 8 weeks. Fish fed the LA diet gained less weight than did fish fed the LO diet. The feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the LA and Mix diets were lower than those of fish fed the SO and LO diets. The body lipid content of fish fed the SO diet was lower than those of the other groups. Whole-body fatty acid compositions reflected the fatty acid compositions of dietary lipid sources. Fish fed the SO diet had high concentrations of linoleic acid and arachidonic acid, whereas fish fed the LO diet were rich in linolenic acid. Fish fed the SLO diet had significantly higher levels of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid compared with fish fed the SO, LO, and LA diets. The results of this study suggest that SO or LO could be used as a replacement for SLO in the diets of juvenile fancy carp without any negative effects on growth and feed utilization when the dietary essential fatty acid requirements are satisfied for juvenile fancy carp.

  • The Kenyan aquaculture sector is broadly categorized into freshwater aquaculture and mariculture. Whereas freshwater aquaculture has recorded significant progress over the last decade, the mariculture sector has yet to be fully exploited. The Kenyan aquaculture industry has seen slow growth for decades until recently, when the government-funded Economic Stimulus Program increased fish farming nationwide. Thus far, the program has facilitated the alleviation of poverty, spurred regional development, and led to increased commercial thinking among Kenyan fish farmers. Indeed, national aquaculture production grew from 1,000 MT/y in 2000 (equivalent to 1% of national fish production) to 12,000 MT/y, representing 7% of the national harvest, in 2010. The production is projected to hit 20,000 MT/y, representing 10% of total production and valued at USD 22.5 million over the next 5 years. The dominant aquaculture systems in Kenya include earthen and lined ponds, dams, and tanks distributed across the country. The most commonly farmed fish species are Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, which accounts for about 75% of production, followed by African catfish Clarias gariepinus, which contributes about 21% of aquaculture production. Other species include common carp Cyprinus carpio, rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, koi carp Cyprinus carpio carpio, and goldfish Carassius auratus. Recently, Kenyan researchers have begun culturing native fish species such as Labeo victorianus and Labeo cylindricus at the National Aquaculture Research Development and Training Centre in Sagana. Apart from limited knowledge of modern aquaculture technology, the Kenyan aquaculture sector still suffers from an inadequate supply of certified quality seed fish and feed, incomprehensive aquaculture policy, and low funding for research. Glaring opportunities in the Kenyan aquaculture industry include the production of live fish food, e.g., Artemia, daphnia and rotifers, marine fish and shellfish larviculture; seaweed farming; cage culture; integrated fish farming; culture of indigenous fish species; and investment in the fish feed industry.

  • Two types of diets, extruded pellet (EP) and raw-fish-based moist pellet (MP) were fed to compare growth, water quality and histology of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus in Jeju fish farm. Two groups of 7000 fish per each tank (initial mean weight 51 g) were fed one of two diets for 7 months. At the end of the feeding trial, significant differences were found in weight gain and feed utilization. Dissolved oxygen (DO) level of the MP tank was decreased from 7.98 to 6.89 after feeding. There were no significant differences in hematocrit, hemoglobin, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase of fish fed the two diets. Whole body protein content of fish fed the EP was significantly higher than that of fish fed the MP. While the feeding rate by month indicated numerically decreased, fish fed the MP had higher feed intake than that of fish fed the EP. Histological examination of hepatopancreas, kidney, and anterior intestine of fish fed the EP did not show any negative effects compared to those of fish fed the MP. This study revealed that EP could substitute for MP in terms of growth performance, blood parameters, water quality and histology of olive flounder.
